Relic "definitely looking" at Homeworld 3 News

PC News by Johnny Minkley

24 November, 2008

For fans of Homeworld it looks like the rumours could be true - Relic Entertainment has dropped a huge hint that it's working on a third instalment in the space-based RTS series.

During a recent visit to the Canadian studio's offices in Vancouver, which you can see right now on Eurogamer TV, we quizzed senior team members on the existence of Homeworld 3.

Speculation that THQ-owned Relic was working on a new version emerged last year with the news that the US publisher had acquired the franchise rights from Vivendi.

"We're really happy the IP has made its way home, and yeah, we're definitely looking at it. We'll see what happens in the future," Dawn of War II lead designer Jonny Ebbert told us.

Asked whether it was one of the studio's current projects, Ebbert said: "There's always that chance." And are they excited about showing it to the world? "Yes, very, very!" he chuckled.

We also tried it on with Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor designer Chris Degnan, asking him how Homeworld 3 was looking. He replied: "As it always has - behind closed doors. Blacked off. Homeworld 3, obviously, I'm not at liberty to tell you anything about. So, good try!"

Three announced games are in development at Relic: Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor and Company of Heroes Online, being co-developed with Shanda for the Asian market.

General manager Tarrnie Williams admitted there were "three or four" titles in the works at Relic. "It depends how you count; whether you use the old math or the new math." He declined to explain the difference.

Relic's original Homeworld released on PC in 1999, with a sequel following in 2003.

Ebbert added: "Homeworld's always been dear to our heart; it's what put us on the map, it was our first product, and I think it will always have a special place in our hearts."

You can see more of our hunt for Homeworld in the latest episode of The Eurogamer TV Show.

Played the first one twice and loved it. First time no probs, second time could I fuck as complete it which leads me to believe that either a) The first time was a fluke, or b) There are long term side effects of substance use.

I wonder if I could go back now and actually finish the Homeworlds. They were so unusual for their time in that it was actually difficult to beat them, obviously I had no clue how to do that due to every other RTS, ever.

Having played a lot of DoW and CoH since then, I think I might be a bit more in-tune with what Relic were doing back then.

Anyone know how to get rid of the insultingly low pop-caps in HW1, though? You could capture as many ships as you could lay your hands on, but you could only build five or so before the game said "no".

Homeworld was ace fun. Capturing all those multi-beam corvettes that try to kill you in the (3rd?) level kinda made building your own crappy ships pointless :)
Be interested to see where they can take it for a 3rd instalment so many years after the original. All that faffing around with 'the beast' in HW2 never really stuck with me.
Making 'globe' formation at the click of a button... ahhh those were the days.

Of the 3, I loved Homeworld Cataclysm, the expansion. Great news if its true they're working on a sequel. Just hope its not got just 1 or 2 ships you control like their other games they are working on!

Relic should do a Battlestar Galactica homeworld-style game. Hell the original Homeworld was very BSG-esque anyway. There's a BSG mod for HW2, the videos look shithot but the mod crashes on my system. Bah. Come on relic, gives us some battlestar.

Lol, "blacked out" is it? "Old math or new math"? Those teasing sluts.

Tell you what chaps - I'm going to turn my back for five seconds. When I turn round again I expect to see a copy of Homeworld 3. If it transpires that this is not the case I will have no choice but to SCREAM AND SCREAM AND SCREAM

I was watching Top Gear the other day on Dave, and I was trying to work out why the music in the background made me sad for ages beforre I realised it was the music from the second level when you come back to find Kharak burning.

God I loved this game, but was so shit at it.

Please bring another one out Relic, and DON'T FUCK IT UP

Best single player RTS campaign EVAHR. Srsly. Fantastic design from start to finish, varied missions, lots of trials you wanted Hiigarans to overcome - just beautiful.

Just don't Dawn of War:isize it. If not, instant buy.

Well according to EG HW2 was only a 6/10 game. Appalling, one of the best space RTS games ever ( as there have been so many ).

Who is this "Rob Fahey" character ? Sack him :p

Very excited about this.

I still have flashbacks to that scene where the big alien carrier rocks up and spawns an amazingly pretty swarm of corvettes which each blossom with a ton of teeny drones- all with those lovely trails. It was special.

Yay!

But for people with rose-tinted specs on, I've gotta say HW2 was actually a pretty disappointing sequel and personally I hope Relic take the time to do it right this time.

For my money HW: Cataclysm is by far the best game in the series - and that wasn't developed by Relic at all but by the now-defunct Barking Dog Studios (some of whom were later involved with Sins of a Solar Empire, I believe).
