R* denies GTA IV content claim

Says it's just bit number two.

Take-Two has announced in a conference call that it intends to release more exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV episodes for the Xbox 360 in 2009, GamesIndustry.biz reports. (We might do some work of our own later. Who knows?)

The company revealed earlier this year that it would be supplying two extra episodes for Microsoft's home console in 2008, but this is the first time it has spoken of extra content beyond the initial deal with Microsoft.

"In fiscal 2009 we'll also be offering additional episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360," confirmed Ben Feder, CEO of Take-Two.

The publisher also reiterated the full game will be released next year, with two exclusive episodes due before the end of 2008.

"We're eagerly anticipating the release of Grand Theft Auto IV in our second quarter. The game looks terrific and we're confident it will be every bit as ground-breaking as previous titles," added Feder.

Update: Rockstar has subsequently told Next-Gen.biz that the comment during its conference call merely referred to the second of two announced downloadable elements for the 360 game.

    Cos microsoft paid 50 Million for exclusive content i beleive, but there was a time when Sony had said they were also getting exclusive content, weather thats still true or not who knows.

    Because Sony have more than one decent exclusive next year so they're not as worried about securing exclusive 'extras' for 50 million like MS are.

    also tbh how many people would actually buy and play this content? as long as the full game is in a finished state when it ships, i personally wouldnt feel the need to buy the extra few missions

    The second episodic content has been pushed back into fiscal 08/09 due to the delay of the game itself. But not additional content...

    Exclusivity doesn't mean quality though, c'mon guys get real, would you rather have Perfect Dark Zero cos it's exclusive (first one that came into my head I know it's old) or Call of Duty 4 available on multi format and be a damn good game.

    Can't wait till the price is announced for the add on packs BTW. Then the fanboys will kick off.

    Exactly dizzy MS gets minimum 25% of all things purchased on live

    The 360 version of GTA will most likely sell more than halo 3 so 5m plus people will be intersted in this exclusive GTA content

    Its a genius idea they can effectovely market GTA4 on 360 for about a year and a half which will keep it fresh and at the rate 360's are selling there is no point releasing the content on PS3 as they dont sell 25% of 360 versions of games

    The game is definately out April/May/June 2008 then. There not gonna give us two exlcusive episodes within the first few months of release are they? The game won't need them at first as it will take quite a while to complete.

    I think this is a great idea to prolong the life of GTA, not that it needs it (I STILL go back to the other GTA games today!). Not long now....it's close..... within 4 months......COME ON HURRY UP!!!!!! This game will be amazing looking at all the trailers, I just pray they don't push it back again!!

    Also it gives all those artists and designers something to do while the programmers try to get GTAIV working on the PS3.

    Yes, Microsoft paid $50 million for the content, but it was no different to a publishing deal, whereby a successful author is offered an advance on royalties.

    I.e. if an author gets a '£100,000 2-book deal', then he/she has to write two books for the publisher and doesn't get the first £100,000 worth of royalties, as technically they have already received that money. After the initial £100,000 mark has been passed, then they start to get royalties again.

    The same thing is true in the board game industry. The massive advances on future predicted royalties are what funded my brother-in-law for four years.

    Doesn't change the fact that Microsoft paid Rockstar $50 million, though....

    Who gives a sh*t about how much MS paid and whatnot, main thing is that we are gettin more GTA4 than the actual game. How is that a bad thing for us players?

    Its not like MS is running out of money you know.

    To be fair though, putting MS down for paying for extra content is a bit like how poor people waiting in the cold at a bus stop call you a ponce just because you have a nice car and you're not on the dole.
    It's not MS' fault that Sony is the Tiny Tim Crachit of the gaming world and is too poor to give their consumers a little treat here and there.

    Not that I'm complaining about extra GTA, but to be honest I'd rather MS had put the money into developing three or four other big new franchises, like with Gears.

    anyone else think that for $50million MS ought to be getting as much content as a whole new game? I mean $50'000'000 is a lot of money. As much as a publisher might otherwise spend on the development of a whole game from scratch. Rockstar ought to be building a whole new game on the existing engine for it to be worth microsoft's while. GTA4: vice city for example. Who knows? I only have a PS3 (from this gen) currently so I'll be happily picking up the game when it's released.

    Well we don't know how big or how different these extra episodes will be.

    Also.. like I said.. this is a down payment for the $$$ that will be made from the sale of the DLC. So in way MS is just offering R* a guarantee to make money, even if the DLC does not sell well. If MS gets a few million downloads for this DLC that 50 million will be back in their pockets and maybe the 360 version of GTA will sell 360s. That was the plan of that 50 million. I guess we will know if it worked when we see the DLC.

    The episodic content for GTA 4 will not be a continuatiuon of the main story, each one will focus on a character you come accross in the main game and will either be a back story, their version of an event in the main game, or what happend to them after the game. Each episode will have about 3 to 4 hours game play in them. And the first one has already been finished...allegedly

    as likely to happen as R* telling you exactly what to expect from the final game itself. they are always cagey with content.

    dizzy, i think i get what you mean in terms of the down payment. does that mean R* gets no royalties/ money from the DLC at all, and it all goes to MS? even so it's a huge investment. normally $50million for a project would be paid to the developer in milestones over the whole project. MS must have a lot of confidence in R* and also have agreed exactly how much/what content will be extra. the money will be funding content created for ps3 too. in reality the artists/coders/designers doing the DLC's wages will most likely be coming from that $50m and they will be working on assets for both the MS content and any content for PS3 which R* will profit from directly. I guess it's a win win for R* but more of a gamble for microsoft.

    Its not dying, but then its not selling at the rate you would expect of a 'market leader'. Its selling a bit better than the original Xbox, but the RROD has affected MS' profits and consumer confidence in the 360 significantly.

    I disagree about consumer confidence. If that were true, then it would show up in the sales figures, and so far the 360's sales has continued to increase at a steady pace (always about the same 'rate' of sales worldwide as the PS3), even during the period when the RROD issue was widely reported in the media.

    You can see this on the worldwide chart at http://www.vgchartz.com< /a> (but it's seems to be down as I write this, or it may be blocked by my workplace). Even if you question the overall accuracy of such charts, they would still show up changes in consumer purchases.

    Also, the 360 is no longer the 'market leader', the Wii is. ;)

    Anyway, ignoring Confounder's pointless contribution, let's get back to the topic. :)

    Hmmm, I don't have a 360 yet, but from my understanding, there's quite a lot of preloaded files (demos, music, videos etc) that you can delete freeing up space for other things. Only some of that 7GB used is actually reserved for the 360 I believe (such as space for the BC emulation).

    I could be wrong of course, so I'm curious to find out. Anyone?

    (I know this is off topic. If I do purchase a 360, it would be the Elite version anyway, (followed by a PS3 later before anyone asks :))).

    generally you behave in a very stupid way, but right now my friend, you look like someone ready to break a guiness record... i used UT3 to show you that the graphics you see in GEARS are already surpassed by UT3 on the Playstation 3... it doesen't matter if 7-8 months later or whatever you will see a X360 version, the point is that Gears (the best looking X360 title to date) already pale in comparison to some of the best games PS3 have to offer, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ut3 etc...

    Uncharted is a pretty good looking game, btw, but whether it's the "best" is highly subjective. The rocks and any sort of solid surface has way too much shine for me to consider it the best looking game, but that's just my opinion. But the amount of shine implemented in that game is very unnatural looking and for me takes away from the overall goodness of its looks.

The fact that consumers have a choice is a good thing.     Actually I have both consoles. Yes, I did throw everybody into the same pool there. As I was trying not to take sides. I later focussed on M$ as that was the general impression that I got. I apologise for this oversight but I've been hacking all night and the caffeine is now getting to me.

    Maybe none of you have kids or younger siblings. I'm not "getting-off" on telling you what to write. I guess I'm just fed up with general degradation of these sites which are for people of all ages, races, religions. I take offense at the accusation that I'm being a "nazi" about it.

    The use of M$ is force of habit and not a fanboy-ism. I also use $ony (but sometimes with a Yen symbol for the Y for added localization). I make no differentiation between these giant corporations' thirst for ca$h and underhand tactics, that is simply business.

    Jiggles100 seems like a fun, easy going chap though, he certainly made a lot of friends through one of his first posts on here :)
    It doesn't take a genius to work out, that in most cases, the colourful language on display or the way someone puts themselves across on any website's comments section is normally a pretty darned exagerrated version of how the poster would talk/act in real life.
    And from reading the comments on EG for a good while now, I'm pretty sure the vast majority of users on here are 15+, so should be used to a bit of filthy talk here and there.

If recent history has been anything to go by, Many of the titles you tout here may not, appear far beyond Q1 2009. Programmers are notorious for providing overly optimistic delivery dates (I'm guilty of that one myself). You also fail to provide an equally inaccurate list for other consoles. You continually play into your enemies' hands here.

    Whoa there, you need to scout around these sites on a daily basis to keep a track of what's happening with these titles. LBP and KZ2 are both currently slated for Q4 '08 release. Anything can happen between now and then. These are also massively ambitious projects, so expect additional delays.

    Were we not promised every title under the sun for PS3 launch? Aren't PS3 games always late? If they're not late then most thus far have been badly ported (Ubisoft, I'm giving you an evil glare). Personally I don't mind if they are late so long as they are good.

    As for Motorstorm2, I can't wait for it but just hope that they don't ruin it again with the loveless attempt at presentation. A great game spoilt by stupid vehicle selection (the 2D attempt is even worse!). I think you will have to wait for them to milk Version 1 with DLC before you even see anything new on Version 2.

    You also mention GT5, I think you'll find that the same delay happen seeing as Prologue has only just been released in Japan.

    UT3 is far from exclusive.

    RFOM I wasn't overly impressed with. OK it had it's innovations but the graphics could have been a little crisper and the storyline seemed to drive me to the end of the game so I didn't have to put up with it any more. I didn't feel challenged by it at all. Once again we are only just starting to see DLC for this, so I doubt they'll be keen to push for the next version until they have made some pretty major changes, such as vehicles, customization

    Next-gen is about immersion, vast environments, AI, detail and customization but that shouldn't detract from a well-conceived background or come between the player and the game (I'm looking at you Evolution Studios)

    Your comments only feed your trolling nemesis. So grab those RSS feeds and follow them for a year (from many sites not just one or two). You will see that time-scales are constantly slipping even up to the last month. Until you have the disc in your hand or even better, your console, don't let the over-optimistic gaming press fool you into thinking that we'll be playing the games as advertised on these sites.

    Finally moving back onto topic (well somebody had to) I expect to see further delays on GTAIV. I guess the DLC will be late in arriving too. To be quite honest any GTA is a behemoth of a game and by the end of it I'm kinda bored of chasing the next dot on the map. Unless they include additional assets or mind-bending storylines I'll be going for the PS3 version as I prefer the controller.

    Oh well, worth a try. I don't condone the magic goggles but I'm not convinced that the PS3 can be dismissed at this early stage. Suffice it to say that 2008 will be a very interesting year and, so long as the fanbots can make it through the festive season without imploding under the gravity of their own convictions, a great year for both sides of the force.

    On that note, I wish all Eurogamers a merry Christmas and a happy new year. I hope Santa brings you the games you've been leaving unsubtle hints for :)
