Q: PixelJunk Shooter 2 not a "re-hash"

Dev has "ton of ideas" left over.

Q Games boss Dylan Cuthbert has said PixelJunk Shooter 2 will be far more than a "re-hash".

"Normally sequels are just a re-hashing of the ideas in the original, but for PixelJunk Shooter we still have a ton of ideas on the drawing board and the engine has lots of potential we want to use before moving onto our next idea," Cuthbert told G4TV. "It would be a waste not to use it to try out more stuff."

Cuthbert said there will be "a number" of new suits included to make use of some of the "brand new ideas for fluid gimmicks". He didn't mention a release date.

Q Games hasn't historically dwelt on IP, having moved from PixelJunk Racers to PixelJunk Monsters to PixelJunk Eden in swift succession. Check out our PixelJunk Shooter review for an idea of what to expect.

They're a really great studio. They make some of the most distinctive assets for PSN.

Ah, this is the first I've heard of it, but I really enjoyed PJ Shooter, so this news is welcome.

I hope they hurry up and release PixelJunk Dungeons soon too. I really liked the sound of that.

Loved Shooter, so am thrilled to hear of a sequel.

Can we have some DLC first though, please?
  • menage #6 2 years ago

Cool, I'm still playing shooter even though I bought at release. Best DLC game last year.
  • Ignatius_Cheese #7 2 years ago

Why not just release it as an Encore pack, as they have already done with Monsters and Eden...?

Then again, the same goes for Super Mario Galaxy 2 ;o)
  • Zebula77 #8 2 years ago

Ahhh, brilliant. Shooter is fantastic (altho a bit disappointed there was no plat trophy, as it's the only game I've gotten 100% on). Lots of fun. Good replayability and wonderful music as well. A sequel is most welcome.

Loved PJS...a bit on the short side but very addictive and innovative. More please...

As much as loved the first pixeljunk shooter, it was pretty short compared to both monsters & eden.

If they had loads more ideas i would have prefered they put some of them in the original, as by the time that game really got into its stride it was all over.

All of the PixelJunk games have been awesome except for Racers, which was a solid first effort but they really made themselves known with Monsters, which is one of the best tower defence games I've played, Eden and Shooter I've only played the demo of each but they seem just as innovative and fun as the rest of the series. Q Studios have something really special here and I hope it continues into the next game or dare I say next series.

This sounds fantastic. It's their most popular game yet, so it makes sense to make another.

I thought PixelJunk Shooter was a very good game, PixelJunk Monsters was okay but too hard and I despised PixelJunk Eden.
  • Lord_Gremlin #14 2 years ago

Ha, first game's ending was just "WTF?". I was sure there will be a sequel. Hope it's just as good.
  • urban #15 2 years ago

i thought there was room for 2 pieces of DLC imo
  • Lee_Morris #16 2 years ago

Well from the ending of the game I was fully expecting a sequel/expansion. I hope they carry on the story because it worked quite well. I think this game released at a bad time as I don't believe it has got anywhere near the recognition it deserves.

I love Shooter. Just wish they'd do a PSP version, though after stupid pirates downloaded Monsters I think they've tunred their back on the PSP.

Anyway, bet there's another code to grab on the podcast today...

Am I the only person who didn't enjoy Shooter? I really liked all their other games, and am a huge fan of shooters, but this barely qualifies as one, IMO.

The fluid physics and melting and solidfying and whatnot was absolutely lovely, but the game (certainly as far as I played) was horribly linear, with most levels only requiring the player to do the one action that was available to them at any given time. A great example was the ice level where you start next to a magma suit, that you have to get in to progress, and require for the entire level. Not taking the suit simply wasn't an option, so having it placed in the level provided nothing more than the illusion of choice.

The shooting aspect felt like it was bolted on as an afterthought to try to make a game out of the funky physics, rather than because it played well, and most enemies in the game spawned cheaply out of nowhere after largely arbitrary goals had been met.

I really didn't get on with it at all, and gave up on it toward the end of the 2nd world. I really wanted to like it, but it turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of last year for me.

Really enjoyed it, but am hamstrung by the msplaced boss sections, which are totally different to the main game and, for a sausage-fingered buffoon like me, a bit tough. Shame - I like the physics-based stuff.

I really like the attitude of Q Games, they are one of a very small number devs who don't make sequels out of anything and everything.

I agree with Stoatboy and the guy who neg-ed him should know opinions may differ. A good game, but thoroughly underwhelming. I don't care about shiny physics if the level design is dull as sand - which is true for half ot the game. Though it has to be said Shooter offers everything a PS3 title should come with, 1080p graphics, PSP remote play, Youtube video capture, trophies and Home rewards. The trophies themselves were seven kinds of bleh. I came to appreciate it, but the price and the scarcity of content make for a disappointing title. The later levels ARE great, in their linear way. They do feel like puzzles.

    Yesss make more games!
  • 3william56 #23 2 years ago

@stoatboy - you ever seen a scrolling 2D shooter that was *not* linear? Half the point is to work out which of the miners to rescue in which order - it HAS to be linear. GTA has a lot to answer for.

Can't wait for PJS2. Yep, a little short, but the quest for 100% gave a lot of replay value, and I got my money's worth in spades. Hoping the new one will be set inside the big f**king knob monster that eats you in the end, Salamander style .
  • Stoatboy #24 2 years ago

@3william56 - my point is largely that it's not a shooter. If anything it's more a puzzle game that plays with the neat physics system. The problem is there isn't enough choice to make a good puzzle game - it's always obvious what you have to do next - at least in the early levels. Most of the time there either isn't a choice of which miner to go for next, or if there is it doesn't make a jot of difference what order you do it in. The shooting element really doesn't feel at all integral to the game - just something to distract you from the fact that largely you're just jumping through hoops that the level designer has placed for you to jump through. Basically, it felt like a very cool tech demo with a bit of shooting tacked on.

Maybe it picks up after the 2nd world, but I got bored before I got to the end of it.
