PSN update: Flower tops the bill

MotorStorm! Resistance! Hasselhoff!

Pretty as a petal PSN game Flower heads the PlayStation Store weekly update today.

It's a bit short to cost GBP 6.29, but that's the price Sony's opted for, and we'd still recommend a purchase; soothing, delicate, serene. Read our full Flower review to find out more.

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, a football-like sports/racing affair, is the other PSN game on offer. This costs GBP 7.99, but there's a free trial available.

There's also a second demo for MotorStorm 2: Pacific Rift to try out, plus a PSP sampler for Resistance: Retribution, which we think looks promising.

LittleBigPlanet gains Ape Escape and Toro the cat costumes at GBP 1.59 a pop, and there's a free All-Star Weekend 09 pack for NBA Live 09. Also free is a David Hasselhoff theme for Pain.

Guitar Hero World Tour gets the full Dig Out Your Soul album by Oasis for GBP 13.99. Tracks can be bought individually for GBP 1.59, and comprise of "Bag It Up", "The Turning", "Waiting for the Rapture", "The Shock of the Lightning", "I'm Outta Time", "(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady", "Falling Down", "To be Where There's Life", "Ain't Got Nothin'", "The Nature of Reality", and "Soldier On".

There are also Acoustic and Southern Rock Track Packs at GBP 4.39 each. The former contains "Drive" by Incubus, "New Slang" by The Shins and "Wonderwall" performed by Ryan Adams. The latter, meanwhile, boasts "Commotion" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Black Betty" by Ram Jam covered by Wavegroup, and "Gimme All Your Lovin'" by ZZ Top.

Rock Band pickings are slim in comparison: The Fratellis Pack for GBP 2.49. Again, tracks can be snapped up individually for GBP 0.99, and include Creepin' Up the Backstairs", "Flathead" and "Henrietta".

And that's all the weather.

Are the controls in Flower as bad as they are in Flow? I want to get it, but not if it implies getting mad every 10 seconds due to the controls.
  • Mildew #3 3 years ago

    Controls are spot on

fl0wer & Resistance Retribution for me today. I can't wait to get home to try it out, this afternoon is really dragging.
  • chessboxer #5 3 years ago

Flower and Retribution for me too. Will check out the demo of that car game.
  • dazrichards #6 3 years ago

Flow was realistically priced but Linger in Shadows was barely worth the money so doubt Flower will be either
  • menage #7 3 years ago

What's in the new MS2 demo? I thought the first one sucked (the demo), but I also heard it was more of the demo's fault then the game itself.

Well, at least I'll try that tonight. Maybe Flower, but seems a bit steep.
  • Moonprince #8 3 years ago

GF finished flo in a couple hours and considering her skills I doubt there's fa wrong with the controls tbh

Bought Flower an hour ago: Simply beautiful!
In 25 years of gaming, this wins my "Most Bootiful Game Evar!" award

I'm guessing this is what they tried to achieve when they released 'that' lawnmower game on the Speccy (...and failed)

That'll be Flower for me, and the Fratellis on Rock Band (lol @ overpriced GH:WT songs). It's worth mentioning that Rock Band usually get more than 3 songs per week.
  • myiagros #12 3 years ago

There was nothing wrong with the flow controls. I have played it alone, and with friends and none of us ever had any sort of problems, it was extremely intuitive and easy to control.

Hmm, I'd quite like that Incubus track on Rock Band. Guess I'll live on in hope.

there should be another button next to the "ignore poster" button that says "ignore positive PS3 comment" :)

    flower sounds great :)

"Flow was realistically priced but Linger in Shadows was barely worth the money so doubt Flower will be either"

Now that is a path of logical conclusion that would make Angela Lansbury cough tea through her nose.
  • charliemouse #19 3 years ago

I'm leaving work early for flower.

My better half is out tonight so I can get all excited about petals.

In other news, Drive is a great track. I can imagine its seemingly simple chord strumming actually proving quite complex on the harder settings.

Though Love Hurts would have also made a good addition in the same vein.

"Are the controls in Flower as bad as they are in Flow?"

Much better in my opinion. Apparently a lot of people saw nothing wrong with the controls in Flow, but I personally hated them as I felt they lacked precision and responsiveness, and I constantly wished for an option to use one of the sticks.
I just played the first two levels of Flower and here I love the controls - not the mention that the visuals are breathtaking (well, the first level was a bit bland, but the second looked amazing) and the simple gameplay feels great.

"there should be another button next to the "ignore poster" button that says "ignore positive PS3 comment" :)"

As someone who owns both main formats (and that funny DVD thingy called Wii) I'll make a positive PS3 comment when it warrants it ^____^

"I'm guessing this is what they tried to achieve when they released 'that' lawnmower game on the Speccy (...and failed) "

I honestly doubt they were trying to achieve anything.... other than have a laugh and take the piss.

Already whored all of Flower's trophies at work so i'll get them tonight at home. Change the date on your PS3 to a week ahead if you want 'welcome back'.

Might even buy supersonic acrobatic battle cars or whatever its called.

fl0w was one of the first games (together with Lair) to use the new-fangled Sixaxis controls, so there is no surprise the controls were relatively awkwardly implemented. However, I still loved tghe game. Them, and the Q guys who make the PixelJunk series, are two developers I insta-buy the games of, even though I rarely touch the PJ games more than a couple of times.

flower, a big bag of green and no work tomorrow. sweet
  • Atropos #28 3 years ago

Just finished Flower, and for 6 and a bit quid it was a steal. One of the best gaming experiences I've had for a while, simply beautiful and worth every penny.

Well, guess I'll have to go back to playing Killzone 2 now. *sigh*

(OK, so Killzone 2 rules, but it should say something for Flower that I am nearly at the end of Killzone 2 and still played all the way through Flower tonight)
  • Goffee #29 3 years ago

Resistance Retribution - NOT BAD AT ALL - a bit muddy and blotchy, but in the shooting stakes, happily beats most other PSP attempts at action shooters.
  • shimeehoho #30 3 years ago

picked up flower and super sonic battle-cars, had the demo from the us store for a while and worked out nicely as a fun multiplayer.

flower is stunning, 4 levels in and enjoying every minute of it. nice to see the 6 axis getting a work out (it's turned off for all the other games unless i feel like insulting friends in warhawk).

i was a bit suprised and annoyed at the lack of hawx demo as well though, i'll just have to wait til i get round a mates to try it on their 360

Retribution looks good. Very similar to the Syphon Filters, and yet completely different.
  • Dave52 #33 3 years ago

Flower is excellent, quite an experience - no regrets here...!
  • Rodchenko #34 3 years ago

I thought flOw was a bit of a letdown but this sounds really great (/fills up account). Seems also Motorstorm is not doing so well commercially, so they had to release another demo. Too bad it's as much rubbish as the first one.
  • makeamazing #35 3 years ago

Decided to give flower a spin, and its refreshing. Its a very simple game, but i like it....
  • Beano #36 3 years ago

I also bought if... love the atmosphere, very relaxing and incredible pretty :) But short - took me about 2½ hours for the first playthrough. Will play it again tonight to find all hidden flowers.
  • woodyrulesok #37 3 years ago

What is in the Motorstorm demo this time?
  • NinjaWilliams #38 3 years ago

Amazing, an absolutely incredibly breathtaking experience that nobody should miss out on!

Flower truly encompasses the pinnacle of creativity, exploration and immersion. An awe-inspiring, magical title that brings out beautifully vibrant, realistic visuals and audio of the Playstation 3 to another level!

Amazing, truly amazing! There is nothing quite like it on any system thus far!

    Everyone needs to try this!

Thank you thatgamecompany & thank you Sony! :D
  • terryfetcher #39 3 years ago

with just a few quid extra we can download from the US PSN store. why's everyone still buying from the EU store?
sites like gaminglue.com sells PSN cards, I just used them again together for my flower DLC.
