Portal: Still Alive content explained News

Xbox 360 PC News by Robert Purchese

23 July, 2008

Xbox Live Arcade title Portal: Still Alive is the standalone original game with some levels from a third-party map pack, according to a report.

Those extra puzzles will not feature GLADoS nor any accompanying story elements, journalist Chris Remo reports on his blog.

PC fans can already access these levels in Portal: The Flash Version Map Pack, which took puzzles from the Flash tribute to Portal and converted them to work in Valve's original game.

Portal: Still Alive was unveiled during the Microsoft E3 press conference as an exclusive game for Xbox Live Arcade.

We're still not sure if that means the game is simply a console exclusive and the PC patrol will get their version on Steam at a later date, but we've contacted Valve for clarification.

We do know that Portal was our favourite game of 2007.

Well that sucks balls. I was expecting more GLaDOS from what they said at E3.

So basically they want me to download a game I already bought for some extra levels that are just 3D version of a flash game I've already finished.

I may love Portal but that isn't going to happen. Why don't they do something useful like give us chumps who bought Orange Box on the 360 some new maps for TF2?!

Sort of what I expected. I knew the main part of the package would be the stand alone game but I was thinking (hoping) the extra content would actually be something worthwhile.

The conversion of the flash edition is pretty substancial but it's a from a different developer and is free on the PC already, not much of a coup for the 360.

So... who's made these levels? Valve, in association with the Flash game's developers?

"We're still not sure if that means the game is simply a console exclusive and the PC patrol will get it at a later date" - why would we get it at a later date when we already have it? I don't follow. Probably just me being a bit thick.

I don't believe they said that. I think they just said, "We're going to put out this game with these levels.". I suspect it will be aimed at people that a) haven't played and completed The Orange Box, b) haven't played and completed the Flash game, c) haven't played and completed the PC version of the Flash game's levels in 3D on their existing copy of Portal and d) want to buy this XBLA offering.

If you want to buy it, do. If you don't, don't. Nobody but nobody is saying YOU MUST BUY THIS, so put a sock in it. :P

What? Eh? What's the best selling XBLA game yet? Portal? How can it be when it's not even out yet? Huh? I bet you're one of those people that writes 5 or 1 star reviews on Amazon for products you're either a fanboy or anti-fanboy about, before they've even been released, aren't you?

I can't believe that people are grumbling that what I think was the stand out game of the year as part of the orange box will now be available on it's own as a downlowdable bargain - with some bonus non-story puzzle levels thrown in...

I doubt I'll buy it as I have the orange box, but if I didn't then as an XBLA title it's made of win.

It's (a bit) like complaining about having to buy Castlevania SotN, Puzzle Quest or Rez HD when you could already own it - which you don't

I already have Orange Box and really loved Portal and would really love some new puzzles for it, but why do I have to buy something I already have just to get these new levels. Why can't original Orange Box owners get the extra levels as DLC for a fraction of the cost. I think it's a little unfair and somewhat of a kick in the teeth to those of us who are fans of the game and invested in it early.

I can understand the "whining", but to me it's fine, I didn't buy the Orange thing.

I also hope this will surface in the form of DLC for the Orange Box. Portal was the main reason I bought the Orange Box - not that I didn't enjoy Half Life 2, in fact I was very surprised how good it was, but as much as I love Portal I don't think I will get the XBLA version just for a few more levels because of the price. The price might be fair if you consider that you get the original Portal as well but I really don't want to pay for Portal twice.

I'm a bit angry at valve, because they didn't support the orange box with some decent DLC. There are a lot of things avalaible forthe PC version, but console owners didn't get any. I recently sold my copy, just because I don't see any fresh content for TF2 and Portal coming.... i hope they'll get their act together with left4dead.

And now, still alive is coming... It's a bit like the FEAR files thing: releasing a stand alone product that should have been DLC in the first place.
