PES 2009 confirmed for Wii News

Wii News by Ellie Gibson

1 August, 2008

Konami has confirmed a Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is currently in development.

Key additions to this instalment will include an enhanced shooting system, said to offer "more control while remaining as easy to use as last year's version". The defensive elements of the game have also been reworked, so you should have more control over defenders and opportunities to fend off attacks.

There's a new AI system, so apparently you can expect "more sophisticated and intuitive movement" from players. There will be different control methods to "cater for a wide range of play styles".

Konami has also announced PES 2009 is coming to mobiles, complete with a bluetooth multiplayer mode. Player AI has been improved, there are new animations, new stadiums, unlockable bonuses and a refined control system.

The mobile game will be released alongside the previously announced PC, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions this autumn. PES 2009 for Wii will follow in spring next year.

Kristan certainly enjoyed the last PES game on Wii - read his review to find out why.

How about some FIFA-like online features? With that the game could be great.

How about having all the major legues in Europe and aquiring more licences with all that money they're making on it.

Well they can't get the premier league one no matter how much money they spend since EA got exclusive rights on that one.

EA pin down exclusive rights wherever they can, to cut other games companies out. Think they hold all the exclusvie licences for all those crap American sports.

Hopefully they'll fix the online mode, and the defensive play.

Maybe make online tournaments more easy to organise too.

i dont understand the reasoning behind the later release date, i mean the first one charted for quite a while so i presume it sold well enough. maybe because it is so different they are hoping people will double dip if the releases are staggered? cant help but feel though that it kills any chance it had of selling as well as the other versions.

Sounds like they're fixing all that was wrong with this years version, so I'll probably end up buying 2009 then. :D

@ Santino, the release date makes sense, think about it. It's different enough from other versions to warrant a second purchase, it's on the Wii where sports titles and exclusives generally do well, it will have no footie sim to contend with on other formats at the time of its release, it's essentially out there on its own and finally the season will be winding down by then, when everything's being decided, often the best part of a season, people will want even more football at the point. :D

At least Konami got something right with the Wii version as opposed to totally messing up the PS3/360.

They were using Criterion's Renderware engine on PES before, but since EA bought Criterion I think they ditched RenderWare. It would explain the difficult transition to next gen hardware at least :-)

PES 2008 on the Wii is like a rough diamond, with the defensive system fixed and a better master league like mode, this could be great.

Excellent, seems like they are working on the few faults that are evident in the 2008 game, looking forward to it (don't mind the wait, still going strong on the current version)
