Okamiden set months after Okami News

DS News by Robert Purchese

2 September, 2009

The full name for Okami DS will be Okamiden: Chisaki Taiyou, and the game takes place a few months after the PS2 original.

That's according to fuller translations of the Famitsu article that outed the game yesterday.

Okamiden introduces a new wolf, Chibiterasu, to the story, who will be ridden by the inch-high painter Issun from the first game. The pair must find wood sprite Sakuya and ask for help, says Siliconera.

There's no mention of Amaterasu, but key Okami figure Susano has had a son called Kuninushi whom you'll meet.

Okamiden is around 25 per cent done. Apparently the DS stylus will control paintbrush strokes, which were the base of the powers in Okami.

Attorney producer Motohide Eshiro and Okami Wii director Kunionmi Matshuhita will head the project, as original developer Clover Studios (now Platinum Games) is no more.

Susano's son? I'm pretty sure he didn't have any children by the end of the original. If this one's just a couple of months after... am I missing something here?

I, for one, shan't lose sleep over a game storyline with glaring issues to do with the timing and manner of the conception of a child.

Coming from a Catholic family, I was asked to believe in even more tall stories, and that wasn't even a prerequisite to have fun with a game.

There's nothing wrong with DS games (the paintbrush element really suits it, for one thing) but I'd really, really, really love a nice HD version of Okami, not that I ever believed it was going to happen.

Pleased to hear it's a proper sequel. There was some confusion yesterday over wether it was a DS version of Okami, or a whole new game. The DS is a good choice IMO.

Makes sense bringing it to ds. An hd version isnt worth the cost when the first game tanked twice. Same applies to Valkyria Chronicles 2 going to psp.

*sobs

LOL i had the box in front of me, and still spelt VC incorrectly :()

I don't own a DS, nor ever intend to, but I honestly don't mind that the best game to be released within the last five years (or more) will have its sequel on the format. In fact, as with Phantom Hourglass (another sequel to another absolutely superb title), the DS is a fitting format for an Okami game, so I think any owners are in for a treat.

My only concern is that of quality, since the original Clover guys seemingly won't have much influence over this sequel. I am dubious of whether it can emulate the glory the original did on the PS2/Wii.

Good to see a major publisher recognising a winning franchise and backing it, even if that means taking commercial risks. Now let's hope Ubisoft do the same and return to the possibly-canned Beyond Good and Evil 2... Shenmue 3 anyone? (Just kidding, even I know that won't ever happen!)

Hmm, it sounds goat (not GOAT), and I say that as an obsessive Okami fan.

Now, a proper sequel on the PS3 - if that gets announced, I will squee like a little girl.

Oh yeah, the whole 'Susano' having a child is one of the game's mysteries, considering it only been three months. So it isn't a plot hole, it's a plot device =P

Although I'm a happy DS owner, I don't think the machine is capable of recreating the beautiful graphics and amazing sound quality that I loved in Okami. The OST itself comes on 5 CDs!

At the end of the day, more Okami, in whatever format, can only be a good thing. Althought I must admit that I would have preferred an HD sequel like many other people :)
