Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 confirmed

Expanded PS3 port out in autumn.

Tecmo has confirmed that Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is in development for PlayStation 3 and will be released in the autumn.

The game's been unveiled in the pages of Famitsu (thanks Kotaku), and is an expanded port of Xbox 360-exclusive Ninja Gaiden 2.

Sigma 2 will allow you to play as Ayane in addition to Ryu Hayabusa, and reportedly promises PlayStation Network support and new content.

The original Ninja Gaiden Sigma was an expanded port of the first Ninja Gaiden and came out in the middle of 2007. We rather liked it, but not as much as some.

Ninja Gaiden 2, meanwhile, came out in the middle of 2008 and, well, ditto.

Bought it, didn't think it was too hot to begin with. No big loss there.

    Yawn. ^cocks.

Looking forward to seeing how (jerky, with silly loading times and a ZX spectrum length install) this turns out.

Hopefully the enhancements will make it the definitive version.
  • DoctorZoidberg #5 3 years ago

    lol @ JIGSAW.

A game that came out last year, coming out at the end of this year, and it's a "disaster" for 360?

Anyone who wanted to play it, would have played and completed it.

I liken you to the hobo that eats the crust of a pizza that's been thrown away to the floor because everyone's done with it. Though you think your some sort of prince because you have food.

LOL! Nice analogy. I'm looking forward to that piece of FFXIII used pizza... Oh no, it's getting a simultaneous release! \o/ Still have to wait an eternity for it though, and I'll probably still get the PS3 version.

I have already played it, but good for PS3-only owners. Not as good as the first game unfortunately, but definitely worth a punt!

no, not in my case anyway... I'd have to buy a 360 just to play this

    awesome btw
  • miiiguel #9 3 years ago

The diference between the lost 360 exclusives is that we have them first than Jigdude and minions have them one year later. When it's the other way arround they still have to wait because we have to have at the same time. Shit's like that.

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait

This may be worthwhile as clearly Team Ninja didn't have time to polish-up the 360 version thanks to Itagaki-gate.

'What's this? Two meals in one week?'
  • senso-ji #12 3 years ago

It'd be awesome if the PSN support is coop play as Ryu/Ayane, with opportunities to do team-up combos like in DOA tag battle.
  • miiiguel #13 3 years ago

yes, like Bioschock. Once. Again. In a bmx. vrooooom.

"It'd be awesome if the PSN support is coop play as Ryu/Ayane, with opportunities to do team-up combos like in DOA tag battle."

Ayane is my favourite character in DOA, so the thought of that is...

    /drool

If that were true, I'd definitely re-buy for PS3!

"Brilliant stuff ... the game was a broken pile of crap on the 360. Guess the PS3 gets a superior version once again. "

That statement only really applies to the Ninja Gaiden series though doesn't it? Not any other games, that I can think of anyway, so it's not really something to shout about.

Edit: compiled posts, and added a sentence. :)

You're right, this is no FF13-gate, but it's still amusing enough. We need more stuff like this, Halo on PS3 or God of War on Xbox that would be epic.
  • Les #20 3 years ago

I've played a little bit of NG Sigma and that was complete and utter crap presentation-wise. So bad actually that I couldn't really be bothered to play past the first level. Gameplay wasn't that great either, coming from the first DMC and God of War.

It's nice for the overall PS3 catalogue (there's no downside to having an extra game available for any system) but personally I couldn't care less.

  • fjharps #25 3 years ago

Well PS3 might be getting it a year later true but it's still getting it. One thing though will it be able to compete with God Of War 3? BTW when is that PS3 exclusive coming for the 360?

    Riiight bmx,

so it's not a case of it being a good game that you'll get a special edition of with bonus bits and bobs - that'd be a good thing surely?

it's more the case that the game is crap, but once bugs etc are fixed, that'll make all the difference from crapness to greatness, and hence the PS will have great game, and the Xbox version be...crap - i see the logic, very twisted, but at least there's a smidge there.

Personally i think it's already a great game, but there you go.

And to boot the PS version of Bioshock is better you say? hadn't realised that...

What with all the polarised views banded around the internet nowadays, it's useful to have commentators like yourself who cut right through the crap and give a balanced view....doffs cap

Shouldn't this read "Finished game to be released on PS3 in Autumn"?

  • Monkey_Puncher #29 3 years ago

The PS3 version of Bioshock was an inferior port of the 360 game actually, mate. The extra content was a complete waste of time and money, they even had the audacity to try and charge extra for it. Bioshock was all about the atmosphere, story and art, not some stupid 'Challenge rooms'.

Oh and the PS3 version of Ninja Gaiden was an upgrade of a year old Xbox game for godsakes, if it wasn't superior there'd be something incredibly wrong.

God I sound like a fanboy. I hope for PS3 owners sake they fix some of the bugs and problems there were with the version of Ninja Gaiden 2 on 360. I always amazes me when I see people saying God of War and Devil May Cry are better series than Ninja Gaiden, neither of those games even come close to the shear depth diversity in the combat system of Ninja Gaiden.
  • Wastelander #30 3 years ago

There is a Bioshock face-off on this very site...

What Bioshock has to do with NG, I really don't know.
  • Wastelander #31 3 years ago

Oh and NG2 was so unfinished it wasn't even funny. Black and Sigma made it look totally half-assed.
  • makeamazing #32 3 years ago

Im really loving Bioshock on the PS3, and havent seen any issues with it, granted I havent purchased/rented it on the Xbox, but thats kinda my point... only in stupid face offs do they mention the tiny issues that you dont notice.

On the point of view of NGS2... I wonder if doing this generates much sales? Guess they must think its worth it or they wouldnt do it.

Many if not most non Sony/MS owned titles will come out on as many platforms as possible to increase turnover.. simple... no need for people to get bent out of shape over.
  • Scyrenn #33 3 years ago

    Any word on DoA5 yet?
  • Darren #34 3 years ago

Ninja Gaiden 2 wasn't that great on the Xbox 360 if you ask me, it was little more than a really lazy sequel to the superb Xbox original that really added nothing new to the gameplay, much like the disappointing Dead or Alive 4 and the dire Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, also from the same developer. That the game's visuals weren't even HD and that it barely looked better than the Xbox original was also a big let down considering how hard Team Ninja pushed the original Xbox. Team Ninja had the chance to do something special with Ninja Gaiden on the 360 and instead they took the safe route and delivered an uninspired by-the-numbers sequel.

I still have Ninja Gaiden Black and play it every now again on the 360 to remind me how good the game was but I got rid of the lame sequel months ago as it was so forgettable. Never did complete it either, got bored of it half way through.

I made the mistake of buying Sigma on the PS3 though and thought it was underwhelming considering it was running on much more powerful hardware so I have absolutely zero interest in the sequel on that platform, especially as the basic game isn't that great anyway. Devil May Cry 4 had more style and humour IMO even if that game didn't exactly evolve the series either and was far from perfect. At least it was good enough to complete and I really enjoyed it.
  • JHuxley #35 3 years ago

"I always amazes me when I see people saying God of War and Devil May Cry are better series than Ninja Gaiden, neither of those games even come close to the shear depth diversity in the combat system of Ninja Gaiden"

Depth? Diversity? Please see Devil May Cry 3 for more information.

Also, these are not the only elements that make a game good. God of War offers fun and spectacle, for instance.
  • Widge #36 3 years ago

    @makeamazing

Turn off the v-sync in the menu. I didn't see one tear when I was playing with that off.
  • MasterNameless #37 3 years ago

The fighting engine in Ninja Gaiden is sublime though, much better than God of War and DMC imo. As a bit ofa fighting purist, as much as I enjoy DMC and the God of War games, Ninja Gaiden is definitely where it's at for me. Enjoyed it more than DMC and God of War put together! Especially with Ninja Gaiden 1... Ninja Gaiden 2, not so much unfortunately. :/
    Edited by MasterNameless at 17/03/09 @ 13:43
  • Widge #38 3 years ago

I personally need the story and the spectacle to be there too, epic score, locations and story.
  • Darren #39 3 years ago

Well personally I'm more hyped up about God of War III on the PS3 than playing another Ninja Gaiden game. Yeah, I know God of War will probably be more of the same only prettier but everything about the previous PS2 games was so awesome that it doesn't matter.

With Ninja Gaiden 2, the combat was OK but everything else was weak IMO: mediocre graphics, an awful, awful camera, no humour, a lame story that takes itself far too seriously, some truly dire level design, a dull lead character with no personality... it ended up being not that much fun to play. It's telling that no-one seems to hold Ninja Gaiden 2 in quite the same high regard as the original on the Xbox.

Note to Team Ninja: Instead of making the same three games (Dead Or Alive, DOA Xtreme, Ninja Gaiden) over and over again, how about trying something fresh and new? ;)

  • Goodfella #42 3 years ago

The fighting engine in Ninja Gaiden is sublime though, much better than God of War and DMC imo.

Yeah, because Kratos is meant to be a bad ass martial arts expert.

    *rolls eyes*

The first Ninja Gaiden was great as far as combat went but give me God of War any day for every other aspect, particularly much better in the narrative stakes.
    Edited by Goodfella at 17/03/09 @ 14:13
  • Darren #43 3 years ago

    Exactly Goodfella.

I know the gameplay is the important thing but without a decent story, narrative and characters then playing a game feels almost pointless. Ninja Gaiden 2 felt like a collection of set-pieces all linked in the loosest possible way via terrible cutscenes and a story that wasn't that interesting in the first place. As such there was nothing there to compel me to keep playing it.
  • Ryze #44 3 years ago

Can't wait for God of War III, btw. Again I'll curse Sony for not leaving a BC option in the PS3. I have a mint copy of DMC 3 that I've only played the opening scene of.

I've also lent my copy of DMC4 to my bro before even playing it. Time to get that back, then...
  • MasterNameless #45 3 years ago

I didn't think I needed to state the obvious... silly me. Of course Kratos doesn't do martial arts. *rolls eyes too*

All I said is that I prefer Ninja Gaiden, because of the twitch, split second nature of the combat engine. The blocking, rolling, jumping off walls, massive power attacks, etc. That's just what floats my boat. I find that more exciting. That was all I was saying, I see and accept why others prefer God of War or DMC, may I please be allowed to prefer Ninja Gaiden? Thank you. :)

Edit: That being said, I can't wait for God of War 3 as well. (And although not good at martial arts, Kratos is surprisingly good at golf! xD)

  • Widge #47 3 years ago

I think people sum up why I'm just not attracted to NG as a game, it sounds like Half Life 2 the brawler. Half Life 2 opened stunningly, played excellently... but halfway through I just thought "why am I playing this?", completely no attachment or motivation to what was going on. The only drive was pinging between points where some bod would point me in the direction of the next set piece. Yay gameplay, but still, I turned to the Source engine multiplayer games which was gameplay + reward for effort & satisfaction.

God Of War strikes the perfect balance between feeling like you are in some sort of classic epic while giving you satisfaction from a nifty combat engine. You need the balance. On the flip, look at Heavenly Sword, wonderful experience but christ, sort the fighting out. Its the polar opposite of NG.
  • Ninja_Tino #48 3 years ago

Lets hope the camera gets sorted and if so this will be a buy for me.
  • Machetazo #50 3 years ago

Great timing! I was keen to get NG2 for my 360, but now, I'm definitely holding off on that, and getting the all-singing and dancing Sigma version on PS3, instead, in Autumn! :D
  • JediMasterMalik #51 3 years ago

The "only on Xbox" tag really does mean fuck all doesn't it?
  • JediMasterMalik #52 3 years ago

@trebell - There is no "only on Playstation", which is kinda the point, but nice try.
  • Bander #53 3 years ago

I'm a bit ashamed to say that playable Ayane would probably have made me pick up NG2 without hesitating, had this been a feature of the 360 game. But from all accounts that I've read, Ninja Blade turned out to be a much more enjoyable game. Perhaps it was for the best that 360 NJ2 has no Ayame, or I may have gone on to ignore From Software's superior title.
  • RedSparrows #54 3 years ago

bit annoyed about NG2 as a whole: NG1 is the best game of its type, ever. I don't give a flying fuck about narrative when the combat is *that good*. NG2 was a let down, and I ain't got no PS3 for this ;(
  • septimus #55 3 years ago

Fix the camera and some of the cheap enemies (yes cheap, not difficult just fricking cheap) and I may get this again, 360 version was so utterly flawed.
  • Rodchenko #56 3 years ago

Potential new hardware issues already reported. Gladly, my 360 has been spared both RRoD and E74 so far. Then again, not using it much lately, despite it being a 'real man's machine' according to some.
  • Calgon #57 3 years ago

Ninja Gaiden Black >>>>> any DMC or GOW any day of the week, really you can lie to yourselves but they were lesser action games, less in depth combat systems with less challenging encounters(really the amount of mindless button mashing Ive seen from DMC put me right off, DMC3 looked soooo dull and sterile to me in comparison).

Good news for PS3 owners I guess, enjoy.

Shame that Tecmo's out put this gen has been lackluster though, they've undone all the good they did last gen at securing themselves among the top fleet of Jap devs in the west.

edit: My god bmx is sooo dumb if he doesnt know how much of a hypocrite he looks, also its Ninja Gaiden its bound to get the attention of anyone who enjoyed the first game.

Oh and if we are going to play FUD wars I think when its the number of YLOD PS3 cases versus the E74 one you are going to lose. ;) Since Im not petty or insecure enough to care enough about either console to sink that low(its weird and sad I hope you know this) I will just point and laugh instead. *Nelson haaaw haaaw* ;)

TECMO doesnt really produces enough classics but NG Black is forever one of the gaming nirvana which required actual skills from gamer to make the game clicks together, as if you were mashing then the game will make you suffer in later levels. Take time to learn and you will enjoy unless you like Dog Ninja mode!

NG2 is still a good game but not as good admittly, the stairs is shameful to be allowed past quality check and excuses inc that it was intended is not acceptable in this day and age.

Great for PS3 owners to get a more fixed and expanded content and I m sure that it will do well, I loved God of War but Ninja Gaiden make me works hard as I have not ever before, the story isnt that important in NG - the pure game is. God of War is more show off in term of visual and story telling but the combat although beautiful doesnt have the same range of to the bone physical combat.

In this day and age, exclusives going to be more of a rarity and next time Konami do Metal Gear, their board not going to let dev do exclusive if they cut off 60 percent or so of their profit without getting exclusive wad of cashs! Simple business decision which is all good for us gamers for less exclusives! DLC exclusives is where the real battle is at.

  • muscleblade #62 3 years ago

    @Rash'

Have you played NG2 or do you think its good that you finally get to play a 360 game?

I do want the best for everybody no matter wich console they own. I dont care if SONY or MS or any other company do better than the other i just want people to know that the 360 is the best gaming console with the best online service this gen. If the PS4 is better than the Xbox 720 next gen i will let people know my opinion on that too. You on the other hand seems to base your opinions on a brand you support and not actual experience with both consoles. Thats why i tend to disagree with you.
