Winter Assault demo

Gritty.

Released today in the U to the K (and across Europe, but that doesn't rhyme), Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault is Relic's first expansion pack for, well, you can probably guess what for, and we've got a demo version up on Eurofiles this afternoon.

Weighing in at 362MB, it features a skirmish map and a campaign mission, giving you the chance to take a close look at Relic's integrated the Imperial Guard, for one thing. We also like the tunnel system idea, which allows you to distribute reinforcements to various points on the battlefield without having to nanny them constantly. This drags the recent theme of us being set upon by underground tunnels toward its logical conclusion (i.e. death at the hands of a big man with a huge sci-fi gun).

For more details on the game, we insist you check out what we previously made of it, and you should be able to find it in all good shops when you're done. Even that nasty one with a heart of gold.

"and what a way to use it" I think you meant to add...

    seriously, a classic

Isn't it quite unusual to release a demo for an expansion pack?

I think its a conspiracy Groggen. They might be onto the plans for world domination by hypnotised hamsters (should get a trademark or something on that ;p).

It's more than your average expansion pack - there's a whole new, bigger and better single player campaign, plus the new army and units for the exisiting armies... It's almost a full sequel, more like a 1.5 (a bit like Homeworld Cataclysm)

    and it's really good :¬)

Is the demo standalone? And, for that matter, is the full expansion? I noticed in the shops that it was rather expensive for an expansion!

The demo is stand alone, but the full game isn't. Seriously StixxUK, you get a lot for your moolah, it's more than your usual expansion. I think Play are doing it for about £16 though!

Wow, demo was pretty hardcore... unrelenting baddies and lots loads of soldiers... Much more than I remember from the original demo (never bought the first one).

    It's tempting, certainly.

play.com have the Gold edition (original game + winter assault) for £25...

Oddly enough.. I haven't gotten around getting even the original game. Especially since I am a 40k tapletop player since 15 odd years and haven't heard anything but positive things about this one.

But I tried it out at a friends house yesterday and played the first 4 or so missions. Great game! The gold edition will be mine soon I reckon.

Some of the things I really liked:
    1. Base building seems to be at a reasonable level. Not to important but you still need it.
    2. Reinforcing squads at the frontlines. It reduces some of the transporting...
    3. Orks!
