Dark Messiah patched News

PC News by Tom Bramwell

9 November, 2006

Valve reports that there's a patch available through Steam for Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, which should sort out a number of tedious bugs. And if you bought the game in a box rather than an internet, you can download a patch for that too.

So what's sorted? Well, here are a few highlights: "Indestructible shields are now really indestructible." "Fixed teleporting that could occur when using lockpick." "Fixed invisible wall present on level 7." And "Fixed Percy getting stuck in a window."

Which reminds me - Rob moved house last week, and, well, if you couldn't get a sofa in through a front door, would your first instinct be to try and raise it through the first floor window using ropes? Somebody should patch him.

The point of which, I suppose, is that everything has bugs these days and you shouldn't hold it against Dark Messiah - especially since it's really quite good. Read our review for evidence.

I'd probably try the backdoor first, but through the first floor window would certainly be an option failing that.

Actually.. Dark Messiah was not particularly good. I got tired of the repetitive combat after 15 minutes.. and then there was nothing else to the game. The levels were also stupid: why do orcs fill every room in every cavern with traps and spike beds?? I probably kicked a hundred orcs down cliffs because, for som odd reason, whenever I walked past, they would immediately walk up to a ledge with their backs turned to me. Idiotic.

The game was way too short too. And the character development system was unfulfilling. Not even the graphics were as good as the Source engine is capable of.

mkreku must have smoked crack while playing.

I love it, even though i've only played a few hours so far the amount of spells and sword moves you learn make it really great.

Best FPS since FEAR IMO. But I'm glad their is a patch cause I sometimes get crashed to desktop.

I've seen Tristram Shandy, getting your percy stuck in a window would really hurt.

Absolutely love the game - it's coming from a similar game design philosophy as Thief, Ultima Underworld and a few more.

Great action game, great dungeon crawler.

Far more concerning is the threat of teleporting toothpicks. Small chunks of pork and sweetcorn could cause chaos.

2 things I did (now I rarely see any problems) are:

activated the console and typed: mat_picmip 1
which does lower the graphical quality by an almost unoticable amount but solved all stuttering and noise problems that I was getting (and sped up loadtimes).

downgraded my graphics drivers to forceware 80.20
which solved most of my crashing problems (it still does occasionally but nothing compared to before)

I love this game now that I works, but I hate zombies and their stupid poison flob they keep spitting at me :p

This game is driving me mad. My rig may not be the newest and fastest on the block but it plays Half Life 2 fine. I thought this patch would improve the incredibly long load times and stuttering sound .....nope. Not only that when I tried to load the auto save it crashes .... not to the desktop but to a black screen with cursor. A ctrl alt del does not even bring it out of its black screen stupor. I end up hard booting the machine. Get the next patch out or it's ebay for this game.

ok apologies all round. @Macross your advice is spot on the graphics are not quite as good but the game is certainly playable, no sound stutters and load times are much improved. To anyone else with problems follow macross' advice. To activate the console go to keyboard controls and click on advance.
