New Oddworld game on the way News

News by Ellie Gibson

23 May, 2008

Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun has revealed he's working on a new instalment in the Oddworld series.

As reported by student newspaper The Cord Weekly, Braun made the announcement at a speech at Wilfrid Laurier University. He told the audience the game is being developed by series creator Oddworld Inhabitants.

"They're such a talented group of people and I really trust their ability to create a compelling content," he stated.

The game will feature a new 3D animation system designed to produce visuals of the same quality as you'd expect in a CGI feature film. "The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects," Braun said. "The tools are finally getting to the level where we can come out with a show and we can come up with a game."

Once digital assets have been created, he went on to explain, they could be used for both games and movies. "You're literally on the set," apparently. Braun also hinted the next Oddworld game could be released episodically. But not for a good while yet - according to Braun it could be "years" before work on the project is complete.

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!

@ Psychotext

Why wait for PSN just get the PS1 originals, dirt cheap and no waiting for something that may never happen. Abe's games are still great games today!

I'd prefer it if they made a movie actually, the characters and atmosphere were too good to waste.

Wow, talk about out of nowhere. Great news if it proves to be true but I'm a little skeptic. I'll fully believe it when Lorne Lanning says it is so.

Wasn't that the last thing we all knew about Oddworld - That they were going to make some kind of movie. The style and huge, and amazing content would be ideal for a CG film. But still i am glad they are considering making more games. Lets hope they have not lost any of that humor and great game design. Abe/Munch had some of the best puzzle segments around. Strangers was a breath of fresh air into the action genre.

Go Oddworld!

bad09: I want graphically refreshed versions... the old games don't look so great on a HDTV sadly.

LOL, you graphics whore! But you are right some games do not age well in the HD age, I was quite horrified when I played Syphon Filter recently on PS3, good memories shattered! Having said that I can tell you Abe doesn't look to shabby today and has aged quite well :)

Stranger's Wrath really was a bit of a gem. I'm still a bit miffed at the EG review, where they clearly hadn't played it as far as the big gameplay-changing reveal. It only really got going after that, though it would be fair to criticise the opening sections for dragging on too long. Stranger was a great character, had much charisma than Abe and the other one.

I loved Stranger's Wrath, up until the spawn of those shity rotating bosses..., fuck..., I get pissed just for thinking about those weirdos. I couldn't get past them... . Now I hate the whole series with passion.

Stay away from me, freaks!

Brilliant! I was just pondering to myself last night whether there'd be another Oddworld game and how much I'd like there to be.

Always been a fan of the Oddworld games. I thought the developers had buggered off for good, but apparently not.

Good news, anyway.

I loved the older games, but felt that Stranger was a tad overated, so I hope the new game takes inspiration from those. Either way, I'm looking very much forward to playing it.

Yeah that group was really talented indeed. Since the first of their works it was just amazing. The last one was risky yet something different and good actually though it depended on the person if he wanted that big change. I also liked that the last one had some extra difficulty from what i can remember and it lasted a couple of days more of interest as well. Can't wait to see their next project. I already am sure it will be stunning and afraid it will take a while to come out but OW WELL!! Glad to have them back in the game for the great games.

This guy ranted a couple of years back about how he wasn't making any more games because of the poor sales of his last game. The industry didn't appreciate originality, apparently, so he was washing his hands of it.
