Metroid Prime: Trilogy discontinued in UK

"Limited availability", just like they said.

Nintendo's excellent Metroid Prime Trilogy has been discontinued in the UK, which means shops are being given no more stock to sell.

Soon, the only place you'll find a copy is the second-hand market.

"Unfortunately, Metroid Prime Trilogy is no longer being shipped," Nintendo told Coffee with Games (via VG247). "Having said that, you may be able to find what you seek through the second-hand videogame market.

"When first introduced, it was announced that there would be limited availability. However, a reason for this was not announced."

Quick; our Metroid Prime Trilogy review explains why.

This is madness. I'll have to pop out and buy this then.
  • Toothball #2 2 years ago

I was planning to get hold of this at some point since it seems to be one of the few games where Wii controls have actually been used effectively. I do hope they're still around for next pay day.
  • originaljohn #3 2 years ago

    i've got my copy
  • Ignatius_Cheese #4 2 years ago

Supposedly Sainsburys are selling this for £14.99 at the moment. Not picked it up yet but will definitely have to find this going for cheaps before it commands a high price.
  • Zomoniac #5 2 years ago

Ok, this is going to go through the roof on eBay within hours. Stocks already seem very thin on the ground. For those interested, just done some web hunting:

    Game - no stock
    Play - no stock
    Amazon - no stock
    HMV - no stock
    Zavvi - in stock
    Gameplay - no stock
    Gamestation - no stock
  • koopa #6 2 years ago

Slightly OT, but is there any info on what has Retro Studios been working on for the last couple of years?

@koopa - Trying to avoid being dumped by Nintendo, I imagine...
  • lennon #8 2 years ago

@Zomoniac - Cheers. Had been looking myself with no joy. Forgot Zavvi. Been meaning to pick this up for a while now.
  • AllMetal #9 2 years ago

This is absolutely pathetic, one of the best games on Wii only gets a limited time release. When you consider the shit that gets pumped onto the Wii this makes no sense.
  • lennon #10 2 years ago

Asda have stock as well by the way.
  • TopKatt #11 2 years ago

I've read elsewhere that this is down to really disappointing sales, anyone else heard the same thing?
  • alimokrane #12 2 years ago

This has been Nintendo's strategy since forever... The reason I didnt get to own any of the zeldas, marios... They do it in purpose to keep prices of their games at the highest possible. Apparentely the money they are getting from Wii is no enough ... greedy bastards!
  • Doopliss #13 2 years ago

Are you sure it's discontinued in the UK? The source seems to to be american, seeing as they mention amazon.com.

It's still £39.99 at the sainsbury's near me btw.
  • Beano #14 2 years ago

I quicky bought my copy a few days ago (from Zavvi) when this was actually news :D
  • Murton #15 2 years ago

Doesn't surprise me really, I mean releases like the Metroid Trilogy are ruining the Wii's reputation as a shovelware platform (jokie)

Seriously though, you'd think that with the criticism Ninty has taken over the Wii and their "abandoning" the core gamer they'd keep the likes of Metroid going rather than continuing to invest money in very samey mini-game packs. On the other hand, it could be little more than a ploy to drive demand in Metroid in the run up to an announcement of another similar title, I guess we'll never know the real reason behind this rather strange decision.
  • Burkey123 #16 2 years ago

That's a pity as it is an absolutely outstanding package that should be played by every wii owner. A very peculiar decision.
  • node #17 2 years ago

Let the eBay price gouging commence!
  • Beano #18 2 years ago

Funny thing is, playing Darksiders motivated me to buy Metroid Prime again on Wii :D
  • munki83 #19 2 years ago

Woo im glad I got a copy for xmas as I was really wanting the game but couldn't afford to get it cos of moeny issues. Its a shame its going to be discontinued but there is no chance im selling my copy
  • YenRug #20 2 years ago

The CWG article does seem to be talking about the US version, which was marketed as a "Limited Edition" in a steelbook case, though I'm assuming most people just thought they meant the steelbook edition was limited, not the game in general.

Hmm... a dilemma; buy 3 games I already own and love, or risk losing the chance to ever own them (twice).
If only I was rich this wouldn't be a problem.
  • Toothball #22 2 years ago

Gah, stock is already drying up. I guess I'll be putting this onto my list of games to endlessly hunt. I'm usually quite good at finding things like this years down the line, although my current hunt is for Vib Ribbon which has proved really very elusive.
  • Eraysor #23 2 years ago

    *hugs his copy*

I'm glad I bought it, it's one of only two Wii games I actually bothered to finish (the other being SSBB which only took one day).
  • haveasafeday #24 2 years ago

    Shame.
There never seemed to be many copies in circulation even when it was released.
  • henrix #25 2 years ago

Bought it this morning from The Hut. Just checked on the site again and its now sold out. Mines been dispatched though! Phew! Forgot all about this game.
  • coolbritannia #26 2 years ago

wow, seems ninty just want to annihilate the proper gamer market.
  • sneetch #27 2 years ago

So, Nintendo are encouraging us to buy second hand games because they can't be arsed making new copies?

Ok, I take that as them giving their blessing to me, I'll still buy new Xbox and PS3 games of course until MS and Sony say it's ok. ;)
  • Scribble #28 2 years ago

Got one from Amazon yesterday. Phew.

"I've read elsewhere that this is down to really disappointing sales, anyone else heard the same thing?"

Of course it's not down to that - you don't just stop selling a product like Metroid Prime Trilogy not long after release because the sales have been slow. Also, lets face it, Metroid Prime Trilogy has sold a hell of a lot more than most other games on Wii - I mean Wii Music was disappointing for Nintendo but that's still being sold.

It's simple - it's probably the only "collector's edition" of anything that is actually a collector's edition. It's an actual limited numbers release but they didn't state that fact until now so it was actually bought by gamers and people who want to play it rather than those who would just keep it in its box to appreciate in value or sell on ebay at inflated prices.

If you're a gamer and you have this in your collection you can now feel privilidge you have a rare Nintendo title that you haven't had to pay through the roof for on ebay.

    >This is madness

Not really - it hardly sold shit loads did it?
  • JohnnyWashnGo #31 2 years ago

I got it, I opened it, I was annoyed that my Metroid Prime 3 save file wasn't recognised by the trilogy disc.

Shame to hear they are discontinuing the game though, it was one of the better games for the wii.

I JUST dont get Nintendo, are they just going to go 100 percent with casual/mass market and leaving hardcore to other rival platforms?

Why can't they try to do both and keep pumping out as much of hardcore games as they can? Dropping limited run of MT is not helping with their weak rep. They should support great games as much as they can, as others said they still do with other games THAT sold less!

"If you don't own it already then you were obviously in no rush to get it.
    Why the panic now?"

I won't be buying a Wii until the Wii HD is released because I refuse to pay AU$300 for a slim gamecube.

I can either buy the trilogy now and have it sit in a drawer for 2 years or wait and pay 3x the current store price. Either way it's stupid.
  • NeonStorm #34 2 years ago

I have the first two on Gamecube and Corruption on Wii separately, and the first two are among my favourite games ever. Is it worth hunting down the trilogy for the improved controls, etc. ?
  • carrotcake #35 2 years ago

I've been waiting ages for this to be cheaper. Damn, now I risk missing it entirely. I'm sure it is worth full price but I can't afford it right now. Can't they just price reduce it to £25-30 and sell loads more copies instead of chucking it in the bi
  • Hexagon #36 2 years ago

This is lame. Metroid Prime Trilogy is a brilliant compilation of extraordinary games catering to the more hardcore among us and now Nintendo want to limit gamers in their choice of games when there isn't that much choice to begin with? Shame on you, Nintendo.

Other than that, desperate as I am, I quickly ordered Metroid Prime Trilogy from here so as not to miss out due to Nintendo and their odd decisions. They have the best price according to GamesTracker.com.
  • millerlfc #37 2 years ago

"You can still buy the trilogy. This article is wrong. And only applies to the limited edItion version of the game. "
How is the article wrong? It doesn't say you can no longer buy, it says that it's been discontinued and there will be no new stock. And what are you talking about with a 'limited edition' version? There is only one version of the trilogy and that's the collector's edition - there is no vanilla version.

I'm annoyed with myself for not buying it last November when GAME were selling it for £18. Have to splash out at least £30 for it now.
  • muters #38 2 years ago

Huh. I was just looking for this a few days ago to see if it'd dropped in price at all, £30-£35 will probably end up having been a bargain.

It's an odd move, surely after having made the games, printing new copies is the easy part? I mean, a lot of games must suffer from poor sales, but developing something only to make 3 months' worth of copies seems a waste. Wonder if they'll one-up the New Play Control/Resident Evil touch-ups and recycle the same gen's titles with some type of MotionPlus re-release (which would mean a re-release of a re-release, but this is Nintendo after all)
  • carrotcake #39 2 years ago

finally picked it up at GAME today after seeing it at a reduced 30 quid and I had some store credit to use anyhow so actually paid 1 quid. don't need to worry about missing my chance to play it now :)
