LOTRO: Mirkwood in December News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

30 September, 2009

Turbine has announced that it will release the Siege of Mirkwood digital mini-expansion for The Lord of the Rings Online on 1st December.

The download costs US $19.99 and includes a new adventuring zone, a raised level cap, the Skirmishes system for co-op scenarios and more.

Turbine also revealed that it would sell an account upgrade called the Adventurer's Pack, also for $19.99. This includes shared storage space for your characters, two additional character slots on each LOTRO server, a special mount and a cloak that gives a boost to run speed.

Lifetime LOTRO subscribers can get Siege of Mirkwood for free with an "early upgrade" to the Adventurer's Pack. Lapsed players can get the expansion for free if they renew their subscriptions before Ocotber 31st, and regular subscribers if they upgrade to a multi-month payment plan before that date.

At present, all these details only apply to North American players. We'll seek clarification on European release plans from local operator Codemasters - but we'd expect them to be similar if not the same.

Almost certainly all of this will not be applied to EU players.

So as a life member, I'll get siege free if I upgrade to adventure pack? I don't multi-char but a mount and cloak might be handy.

Might be right there, dizzy. Codemasters are the suck with the LotrO stuff. They refuse to split the forums to allow MyLotrO support.

Apparently they're still finalising details.

I'll wait on what ideas Codies have for offering SoM, though I may not renew in Dec, because the game's focus is shifting alarmingly in a way I'm not interested in (obsession with Rad, takes forever to acquire it, or high-end items that actually help secure you a place on runs - as you help others, but things often don't align when it's your turn), no-one bothers with story, so they may as well be playing Diablo! :( As a bonus, you can't enjoy giant swathes of the game you're subbed to, in the process!))

A *digital* mini-expansion you say? That sounds awesome, I hate it when they try to fob us off with analogue expansions.

I'm a little disappointed to be honest. Six months ago I was hoping by now to be crossing the Isen or riding in the Wold in the Rohan expansion, so to be offered a 'mini-expansion' that doesn't sound much more than an update has left me feeling cold. I'm sure I'll be buying but I hope this isn't going to be their future pricing plan, as I've already paid a lifetime sub and I'd rather have 'proper' expansions than little add-ons and stuff.

EDIT: Okay, so Mirkwood sounds a little more than I first expected (namely a Dol Guldur dungeon) but I'm still feeling a little less excited than I would about a 'proper' expansion.

Dammit I thought the cross-character storage space was coming with the expansion. Oh well, I'm sure I'll end up getting both one way or another.

Yeah, cross-character storage was originally part of the expansion.

Splitting it out and charging another $20 seems a little tight to me; I think the DDO store has gone to their heads.

I'm looking forward to this and I hope future updates and 'mini expansions' carry on expanding middle earth like this. These are the areas I'm looking forward to seeing and exploring most and I personally think rohan etc should be quite far off.

Been thinking about returning to lotro as it seems to be the only mmo that can ever keep me coming back but I may end up ditching codemasters and playing with the yanks, at least then I'll get a proper service (and a better bloody website to boot!).

That's what I did. I'm not a huge fan of how Codemasters manage their MMOs.
