Lost Planet 2 on top in Japan

Helps PS3 be best-selling console.

Lost Planet 2 has topped the Japan chart on PS3, shifting 85,000 units in a week.

That performance helped Sony's flagship console outsell Wii by 19,075 units to 18,456, according to Media Create.

Even the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet 2 performed well, taking fifth place with 35,000 units sold. The game's similarities to Monster Hunter - co-op teamwork against massive beasts - appear to have paid off.

This week's other big performer was World Soccer Winning Eleven 2010: Challenge of the Blue Samurai. In other words, A World Cup edition of PES licensed by the Japanese Football Association to focus squarely on the Japanese national team.

The PS3 version of this game was second with 57,000 sales; PSP sixth with 21,000 sales; PS2 ninth with 14,000 sales; and Wii 15th (sales not mentioned). There's no sign of an Xbox 360 version.

The final new entry of the top 10 was PSP game Fullmetal Alchemist in seventh.

The places in between were coloured by Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 in second (62,000), Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in fourth 34,000, New Super Mario Bros. Wii in eighth (18,000) and Friend Collection in 10th (14,000).

Further down, newcomer Tropico 3 can be seen in 27th on Xbox 360.

Overall, the DS counted eight entries in the top 30, the PSP seven, PS3 six, Wii five, Xbox 360 three and PS2 one. That's a much more even spread than, say, two years ago.

Nintedo's DS still dominates the region, however, notching up 26,145 sales across the various models. PSP was second with 23, 313 sales.

Then came PS3 and Wii and finally Xbox 360 (4656) and PS2 (1175).

And that's all the weather.

The no checkpoint complaint is out of proportions imo. The achievement/trophy list however is very demanding.

Incredible sales for the PSP, considering it's reputation in the west.

I think the PS2 and PSP only really sell big numbers in Japan now. It's pretty much impossible to find a new PS2 console in the UK although they appear to be a few hanging around in Europe on Amazon's German and French sites. I have a feeling that Sony might suprise everybody and announce the PSP2 formally at E3. Nintendo is introducing the 3DS and Sony won't want them getting one over them.

I've been thoroughly enjoyign lost planet 2. But I can understand why it got some negative responses. I've only been playing with one friend and two random online uys (most have a japanese flag) and its been a blast... But the f*cking train level man! I've rarely been so frustrated in my life :(

@Anthony Daniels: you superior, superior, superior, and quite superior revolting snob of a man. I'll be one of those "horrid little men" buying COD later in the year. That said, I also loved/completed Ico and Okami. I guess I'm bi-curious? What 'craft' are you talking about, by the way?

I agree. Have people forgotten that we have been blessed by the second coming of the "ignore poster" link already? Blessed are those who use the "ignore poster" link for they do not have to put up with reading the same kind of shite from the same posters day in day out.

Ya japanese people are blind loyalists. Same thing goes for Americans who buy "U.S. made" cars.

Game isn't that much like Monster Hunter, but it's at least fairly unique and engaging. I enjoy a lot of Capcom's design rhetoric.. There's a lot of good design and player reward here if you buy into the theory of it. Stuff that will make you think and genuinely take advantage of it's own mechanics.

It's becoming somewhat disturbing how distanced I'm finding myself from the enthusiast media lately. I'm finding the B and C tier stuff to be almost universally more appealing.

But then again, I'm a PC gamer, so I guess that's not that odd that I find things that aren't reversed almost entirely on production values to be better products.

I feel the same thing. I skipped RDR and love Lost Planet 2.

Same here. Once you get the hang of how it works its kind of brilliant. The game is meant to be played over and over with different people. The campaign mode is like team death match but only against AI enemies.
