Lost Planet 2 to have four-player co-op

Plus customisable heroes to stand out.

Capcom has said Lost Planet 2 will feature full campaign co-op support for up-to four people.

The Lost Planet 2 reveal trailer hinted at this yesterday; we saw one player deploy an expanding cover shield, which allowed two uniquely-outfitted helpers to fire rockets and supporting rounds from safety.

The sequel's story is spun 10-years after the adventures of Wayne in Lost Planet 1, and so lots has changed: vast slabs of ice have melted, and given way to vibrant jungles and other environments.

Players will make their own heroes this time, too - not settle for some silky-haired pouter. However, we're not sure what sort of customisation options there will be, nor whether they will affect abilities.

Grappling will return, and Capcom has some extra actions to spring on us at a later date. Also, the ranks of the alien and insect-like Akrid army have expanded.

There's no word on VS (Vital Suit) mechs, but they feature in the video and so are presumably as destructive and consumptive of T-ENG fuel as in the original game. Multiplayer versus modes are also kept under wraps.

We're also none-the-wiser as to platforms and dates. We expect Capcom will stay multiplatform and gun for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. (UPDATE: It's worth mentioning the latest press release only states that Lost Planet 2 is in development for 360, so it could well be a platform exclusive - but Capcom has yet to confirm.)

Capcom does promise that fan feedback has been heavily taken onboard. We know Lost Planet 2 will be the publisher's first title to use MT Framework 2 technology, too.

We're quite excited; Lost Planet 1 was often spectacular when devastating mechs took on swarms of Akrid or screen-filling bosses. Bit it all turned out to be a bit skin-deep, as the plot turned cheesy, combat plateaued and climactic encounters resorted to by-the-book weak-spots.

Worth a bash, though, as our Lost Planet: Extreme Condition review points out.

Capcom, jungles, 4 player co-op...Mhunter with mechs?

I thought the trailer was pretty average until I saw the last bit with the MP boss battle. That got me hugely excited all of a sudden cause it looked awesome. Also everything else (the boat scene, the battles) all made much more sense with 4 player co-op afterwards.

    local or online co-op?????????

I couldn't care less*. But then, I'm not everybody.

Just for the love of GOD change the multiplayer -->

Add friends support and let me bloody quit out of a match without having to quit the whole damn game!
  • muscleblade #7 3 years ago

    GOTY! For me at least.
  • Rash' #8 3 years ago

the official statement is the game is being developed for 360 with no mention of other platforms. timed exclusive? most likely.
  • prometheus3k #9 3 years ago

The PC version Lost Planet Extreme Condition - Colonies supported cross platform multiplayer (PC vs 360).
    Can we expect the same?

In all fairness to the gamepad vs mouse/keyboard debate, the PC version should only allow multiplayer wit 360 owners if a controller (perhaps just the 360 controller) is connected to the PC. :D

co-op is the way forward man. the sooner all devs start realising that the better.

"co-op is the way forward man. the sooner all devs start realising that the better."

Co-op is a poor substitute for split-screen gaming. While it might be a nice addition for people with plenty of spare time or real gaming addicts, I don't think the masses (the people that don't have a Live Gold account) will ever care about it much. Certainly not in the next console cycle or two.

    >"vast slabs of ice have melted, and given way to vibrant jungles and other environments."

    NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It was the one thing good about the setting.
All they needed was the co-op with a bit more horror element with even more snow and less electricity, and you had yourself one heck of a game.

    what's this 'mt framework' stuff?
  • mattigan #14 3 years ago

It's Capcom's sparkly new engine, that LP2 is buitl upon
  • muscleblade #15 3 years ago

I liked the melting ice bit from the trailer, looked authentic. Dont forget that the Earth once was covered with ice too.
I like the idea of LP with different enviroments.

Looks like the ice age on EDNIII is finally coming too an end. Makes sense to me.

Split screen gaming sucks, you can't see half of what you're doing most of the time, framerates always suffer. Also split screen is mostly competitive. Co-op is playing the game together. And online gaming ensures there's always someone around who wants to give it a shot.

You seem to forget the two main issues with split-screen gaming:

    1. You lose screen space the more players you have on the same console - and I'm willing to bet that more members of your beloved 'masses' have smaller, standard-definition screens and therefore would hate split-screen gaming because it would be very difficult to see what the hell is going on.

    2. People have to be in the same room at the same time to play. Obvious, I know, but I'd say it's more difficult to get two friends into the same room than it is for those two friends to meet up online.

And anyways, according to Microsoft one third of all 360 owners are Gold subscribers - certainly not a majority, but not exactly an insignificant number.

    And, finally:

"Co-op is a poor substitute for split-screen gaming"

A-buh? How are the two mutually exclusive? Co-op is one TYPE of multiplayer gaming and most games let you do it in split-screen or via Internet or Network. The ones that don't let you do split-screen co-op tend not to let you play ANY form of multiplayer in that way.

You sir, are a troll - and a failing one at that.
  • menage #19 3 years ago

"Unless you like having friends round to play, which I do every single week.

The reason I won't touch burnout paradise is becasue it has no splitscreen play. "

Meh, I'd rather play something that doesn't obstruct my view, like SF4 or LBP. Still great when you have friends over, less dodgy.

Also, I don't think Burnout P would be even possible with splitscreen seeing as you have one big streaming city.

  • jonsaan #20 3 years ago

    Local co-op?

The greatest co-op games offer both local and online co-op. If you're really lucky you can go online with your splitscreen buddy.

"You seem to forget the two main issues with split-screen gaming:"

I didn't forget those two main 'issues', I just don't see them like that. The additional fun split screen gaming brings is more than enough for me to compensate for them.

"A-buh? How are the two mutually exclusive?"

Of course they aren't. But a euro invested in one can't be invested in the other. I'd rather developers put more effort into Single Player and split-screen than in co-op.

"You sir, are a troll - and a failing one at that."

You, sir, seem to be successful in acting like an idiot.

    LOL

It's one of the biggest complaints against KZ2. The masses already care about it, and will likely care more and more over the next console cycle or two.

And don't you people ready EG at all? MS just announced that 56% of all Live users have Gold accounts. Just look at the 360 page!
  • menage #23 3 years ago

"There are games where that works and games where that does not work. I like both splitscreen and fullscreen co-op games. Dismissing one type of co-op play is simply rediculous.
    "

Just as rediculous as saying you'll never touch Burnout P because you can't play splitscreen Roadrage. It's all subjective my friend. I just don't fucking like splitscreen views.
  • gman7714 #24 3 years ago

Wow enough posters on their menstruals today!

LP was my 1st 360 game and I enjoyed it hugely (apart from the dodgy cutscenes)

4 player co-op , the new engine and shed load of improvements from the 1st game could perhaps put this in GOTY territory :)

Note the highlighted elements of your post. Where you went so, so wrong first time round is in asserting your own personal opinion as undeniable fact. Took you long enough to correct, but at least you get there in the end, eh?

Come on, you can't be serious?! Did you ever, even for a tiny moment, actually really truly believe that when I say "Co-op is a poor substitute for split-screen gaming. While it might be a nice addition for people with plenty of spare time or real gaming addicts, I don't think the masses (the people that don't have a Live Gold account) will ever care about it much." that I mean that as an undisputable fact?!

I'd think the "I don't think" part was enough indication that it was an opinion that belonged to me. :S

Well, see, after your dozens upon dozens of comments about how Microsoft shareholders won't stand for how much money the Xbox division is losing, so they'll demand that they pull the plug, I'm pretty much of the opinion that you wouldn't know your own arse from a Skoda.

And that you're a guy with a *massive* chip on his shoulder about Microsoft things. And seeing as the first one was a 360-centric game, I reckon it's within the realms of possibility that in your silly little head, this sequel is a 360/MS franchise and therefore = BAD.

So I guess I'm coming back to my point that you're a troll, but this time clarifying it as 'You're an anti-MS/360 troll'. So you're bound to find stuipd faults with the game, which gives you a supposedly legitimate reason to dislike it.
  • Rodchenko #30 3 years ago

It's one of the biggest complaints against KZ2

It's not. Go read the forum. The only one who was obsessed with the lack of co-op in KZ2 and made a big fuss about how incredibly, unforgivably disappointing this is, was you. There is plenty of other things in KZ people (myself included) are disappointed with, but it certainly ain't co-op (or the lack of it).
  • Razorus #31 3 years ago

Very excited about this. Loved the first one epically.

Oh and btw. "Worth a bash"? I loll'd.
  • muscleblade #32 3 years ago

"The reason I won't touch burnout paradise is becasue it has no splitscreen play. "

If you download the party pack. It has 8 player splitscreen or something.
  • Les #33 3 years ago

"So I guess I'm coming back to my point that you're a troll, but this time clarifying it as 'You're an anti-MS/360 troll'. So you're bound to find stuipd faults with the game, which gives you a supposedly legitimate reason to dislike it."

All of my posts were about co-op, which I think is a feature that's irrelevant to most and worse, takes resources away from areas that could utilize them better. I haven't said a single bad thing about this (multiplatform) game itself. My dislike of a certain monopolist that abuses its powers whenever it can has nothing to do with this at all. As I've said many times before, the 360 is probably the best product MS ever created.

Why not just admit that your initial reaction was way off target and that you let earlier discussions about completely separate issues cloud your judgement?
  • bioreit #34 3 years ago

Nope, because none of that is true.

You could argue that putting multiplayer into any game takes valuable investment euros away from the single player experience, so therefore no money should be spent on that at all. But then there's a limit to how much money you can keep pouring into the same thing and still receive a big benefit - and examples such as MotorStorm prove that the lack of a split-screen option but the inclusion of online play don't affect sales overly much.

My reason for bringing up your posting history is because I think you're an idiot and that it needs to be brought to the table every time you make a comment - it's *all* about the context.
  • muscleblade #35 3 years ago

"but that has pass-the-controller play, not splitscreen"

Oh! Didnt know that. Havent downloaded it yet.
  • Les #36 3 years ago

"You could argue that putting multiplayer into any game takes valuable investment euros away from the single player experience, so therefore no money should be spent on that at all."

You could but I don't. You're right in saying that there's a point at which investing additional resources in a certain part of a game starts to produce diminishing returns. Theoretically very sound. But TBH I've never encountered a game that couldn't have used an additional layer of polish to good effect. Look at Resistance 2. SP could have been much better and more polished had less resources been wasted on co-op. And the reason why I think putting resources into co-op is a wate is because many more people play SP versus co-op.

"My reason for bringing up your posting history is because I think you're an idiot and that it needs to be brought to the table every time you make a comment - it's *all* about the context."

I don't think you're an idiot in general but you're acting like one in this thread. This is a multiplatform thread and out of nowhere you start attacking me and drag a discussion about whether or not the xbox projects are appreciated by MS investors into this discussion in order to second guess my motives.

I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. I seem to recall that in previous discussions you were able to be civil and use reason instead of emotion in a discussion. Maybe you've had a bad day or something. But if you continue in this fashion I think it's best we ignore each other in the future.
  • bioreit #37 3 years ago

    @ Les

Not having a bad day, but it may pay to read my Eurogamer profile blurb...

I think this has gone on for long enough and I feel able to say, sorry if I made you feel bad. Sometimes a jest can take on a life of its own.
