That didn't take long.

Update:All of the LittleBigPlanet keys have gone! Sorry for all those who had trouble connecting during the stampede, and apologies to those who missed out.

LittleBigPlanet needs no introduction, and if it did, Sony would use trumpets and red carpet for the occasion. This, we've been told, is the PS3 game of 2008. And we're inclined to agree.

So, we're excited to have teamed up with Sony to give away a whopping 5800 keys for the LittleBigPlanet beta. 5800! And all you have to do to get one is head to our LittleBigPlanet giveaway page and click a button.

You have to be a registered member of the Eurogamers community to do this, as most probably know. This involves little more than choosing a witty username and password that can be remembered.

The LittleBigPlanet beta starts tomorrow and ends on 12th October. This should give you plenty of time to enjoy charming platform mayhem with up to three friends, or get to grips with the magical toolset ingredient.

Quick quick. There's only a whopping 5800 left!

LittleBigPlanet is due for full release on 24th October.

Well thanks for nothing eurogamer!
I have been waiting to get into this beta for ages and to be honest i expected to get at least a few hours notice before you started giving them away! I checked the site just before 5, left work and got home at 8. Checked the site at 8:20 and spent until 9:40 when the last code went trying to get one - and failed.
Now i would moan about your crap servers but if they were better, the codes would have been gone before i got home anyway. The problem i have is that you gave no warning, it isn't fair and i don't think you should be trusted to give away the codes in the future.

Obviously this was one huge f**k up.

Got mine at 6.30pm but took another 30mins to get to my messages to get the code, they should put the code in the email they send you, anyway not to complain...How awesome is LBP, as soon as Stephen Fry started speaking i had a semi, def GOTY, thanks MM, Sony and Eurogamer again cus' this is the 2nd beta i got into from your site.
If you're going to have another free for all beta give away, say R2 or K2, i'd really think about updating the server for it or i'm sure i'll get repetive F5 strain injury.

Cheers EG. Nice way of forcing people to register on the forums so you can charge more for your ads due to more registered users on your site.

Coding it so it stated "1 Key Left" even though they'd all gone was a nice touch as well.

Why do sites agree to this shit when they haven't got the hosting to support it, and it just pisses everyone off who doesn't get in...oh wait...see the start of my post.

It is a disgrace however that you agree to host this crap when you obviously have no-where near the infrastructure to cope with the demand. Next time actually plan for it... Point a subdomain to a dedicated service that deals with this kind of thing, otherwise you just end up looking like a joke.

From a techy pov, looks like your hosting is provided by clara.net f (gamesindustry.biz, and all your european language sites) all from the same colo room in telecity london POP2, off their second aggregation router.

Looking at the way that if you access your IP address, it'll cycle through the sites, it seems like you've got load balanced pools of servers as well (I'm hitting a different server in the pool each time, giving me a different page) , which is also good. S
eeing that traffic would get through and keep the connection open most of the time, resulting in a server 500 error, I'd say your hosting is fine, bandwidth wise, but your servers just fell over. When you removed the page, and cut down on the servers actually processing new logons to your forums, and actually bringing up the little big planet beta page, the 404 error was immediate.

If you do plan to do this sort of stuff in the future, contract it out to a specialist service, or improve your infrastructure. Maybe dedicate a pool of servers specifically for this purpose Sliming down the code and lifting the weight off your main site.
Try to ensure you don't piss your ad dollars (ahem, I mean users) off.

Also hate your massive flash ad banners on the site, especially when they embed videos and slow the site to a crawl.

Thanks for the beta key EG, been playing this most of the night now, its sooo good! Stephen Fry is hilarious! I kinda feel that it'll ruin the full game for me slightly though by playing this beta so much! Ah well!

Right.... I'm a straight talking methodical Guy so i'll what my language...

Many People, alike myself, have been trying to log into this site since six o'clock. And as you can gather to no avail!

I've have read through many of these post's, as i did previously for the SOCOM beta key's and it all comes back to the same two thing's

1. your site can not cope with mass logs/hits....
Well the resolution to that would be to add more dedicated servers to the site, especially if your going to promote the handing out of large numbers of beta keys for games that tens of thousands of people are dying to play.

2. Half of the keys go to Americans...
If I'm not mistaken, this site is called EURO-gamer, not Yank-gamer! Nor Jap-gamer, but EUROGAMER!!!! So on the basis of that, that means the keys you have for release should be there on a first come first serve basis to EUROPEAN GAMERS!!!
Gamers in europe have had to put up with the sh.itty end of the stick for to long, Especially in the U.K. I was livid that i didn't get a beta key for SOCOM. I tried for 2HOURS no stop to log in to the site, and by time i did evntually get on all the keys were taken.
Its common knowledge that the yanks have the best ping, in the world. so they would be the ones to get on first as there Data transfer is substancially higher than that of an average UK broadband owner, which only runs at 20meg tops.
The way to resolve this is simple, Allocate beta keys to european countries only, and i know you can do that, you can tell by the i.p adresses and handshakes with the connection where the user is situated plus all users have there country of residence in there account details, so then block all non E.U members from accessing the key page so its visible to E.U members only, then allocate a certain amount to each country, that amount dependant on the number of users there are from that country to cater for a stronger demand.

There will always be losers in this sort of scenario, but does it always have to be the same people??? the ones that wait for hours trying to log on, myself included, just to find out they've been wasting there time???

The one thing that is certain, is that something needs to be done about it

Or i suggest SONY find another site that can cope with the demand...

Yeah Eurogamer, stop giving away free stuff. And also, when you do help companies on promotions like this (that also benefit your readers) make sure you spend a load of your own money on new servers just so new sign ups dont have to hammer F5 for hours thus creating the situation they're complaining about. I hope your site suffers a massive backlash over this, God knows it deserves to.

Look, it was a free giveaway. Eurogamer and Sony didn't exactly trample on your "rights" to get a beta key... really.

There was only a limited number of slots anyway, so even though one of you who didn't get in would've been luckier, some other poor guy would have been left out in the cold instead.

And obviously the "1 key left" thing was a mistake of some sort, don't try to interpret it as something else.

IIRC there will be a 'creator' option right from the beginning for people to do that. I prefer the drip-feed approach personally, learn little bits at a time.

Meh, well I managed to actually get a key only to enter it into the Account section on my PS3 to find that my unique key had been used too many times already. I now have a worthless key that I am planning to sell on ebay as a collectors edition packaged with a pint of guiness. Hopefully this will reduce the bitter taste it leaves in the purchasers mouth when they try to register, I personally had to drink 4....

I wish Eurogamer would get a server capable of keeping the site running when they give out keys i spent ages refreshing the page but had no luck with it loading up, the actual LBP page got on twice but never as far as giving the key and in end i got the server busy no keys left... I was lucky with Socom and managed to get a key when they gave them away but even then it took me 45mins i think of trying due to page not loading due to servers struggling.

Thanks Eurogamer! LBP is fantastic! For those asking about the game, it's Super Mario World with a complex physics engine. Getting to grips with the "Create" section is a difficult, to say the least, but it's to be expected as it has such incredible depth. So much potential & there's already some great user generated content surfacing on the first day. The only problems I've experienced with the beta so far is with online play, the survers just can't handle it. Admittedly, I've only played for around 3 hours, but I honestly think this with to the "hardcore", "casuals" & children - truly a classic!

Blimey, what a bunch of sad individuals some of you are. I think it's superb that Eurogamer have been able to offer such an amazing opportunity.

I can't imagine many websites not buckling under the load that EG will have been under last night. You only had to Google "Eurogamer little big planet" to find that the news was everywhere - even on Wikipedia. There must have been an incredible number of people trying to get access to the website.

And why are you moaning about "the bloody yanks getting all the keys". That's not really sensible is it! Consider this - most UK and European gamers will be ONLINE and most likely GAMING at that time - not at work! Or is it that you're all spotty teenagers that are moaning? Quite likely one would imagine - so go and get some zit cream and grow up.

And for those that are moaning about having to register - think about it - how would you otherwise guarantee fairness in the distribution of keys? Having a registered account is the easiest way to guarantee that each person gets only one key. Sure, they could get more by registering more accounts, but that's a hassle. Just imagine if it was free for all - these keys were being sold on eBay so would have been snapped up by those types quicker than puss ejecting from your facial irregularity - or are you seriously telling me that you wouldn't have moaned if it was free for all?!?!?!

Now look - you've made me one of the moaners! But at least I'm moaning about the right thing! Get a life!

I'd like to thank Eurogamer and Sony for offering this wonderful opportunity. Please ignore the morons and keep up the good work! Oh, and having Stephen Fry doing the voiceover in a sort of Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy fashion - Genius

took like 2 hours to get past those demo levels and tutorials including all the ones in create mode. well at least now I have all the creation options unlocked, I think.

If you look on the xbm it says this beta version expires on Oct 13th.

glad I got a beta key because I'm one of the people that actually visited EG before today. actually EG is my homepage and I check the news multiple times a day.

I tried at 7:30 PM, UK time...got a few internal server errors for each page I had to navigate to and by about 7:45 I had received the key. It wasnt that difficult.

Re the beta...I played it for quite a bit last night and it just keeps getting more and more fun...I even had a dream of it

I found out about the beta at about 7.30pm ish. By 7.45 I had got a beta key and by the look of it there was approx. about 800 left.

Only playe a couple of levels but so far it's as good as what I expected. Sackboy is awesome.

After trying for hours I finally managed to get my hands on a key!

Up until yesterday I had refused to get drawn into all the hype surrounding the game, as I have had my fingers burnt too many times before! From the moment the game fires up you cannot fail to be impressed, it is a work of pure genius!

And whoever decided to have Stephen Fry narrate the tutorial deserves a medal!

Was a bit sweary myself about eurogamer last night, but can understand why it buckled. What really needed to be addressed (if it's true) is how the keys were allocated i.e it should have gone to Europeans with PSN sign ups.

Maybe Eurogamer could have limited it to registered members of the Eurogamer site.

Still I'm sure there will be some enterprising yanks selling the keys on ebay. I'll wait for the full game and enjoy Wipeout HD tomorrow instead.

I was one of the lucky few (5800) to get the code but it took a good 45 minutes of refreshing and errors to get there.

Reminded me of the launch of the the wii when stock was like gold dust and you'd keep refreshing amazon because you'd know they'd have about ten machines at 11.36am. What a waste of thime that turned out to be.

Loving every minute of it so far, glad I pre-ordered. My only gripe is that I have to go to work instead of playing LBP

EDIT: and for future reference Sony, this is not a good way to give away beta keys. Many annoyed people, and not entirely EG's fault. Do us a favour and let people enter a raffle next time...it can be done through a site like EG and will be much less likely to rape their poor servers.

Annoying,

I was trying for 3 hours to get a key,

Server issues, ment, that by the time i'd registered a new account (forgot my old password & no access to old email)

I slowly watched the numbers drop from 3200 down to 1.

then when I finally get to it (saying 1 key left)

It gives me a blank page on numerous attempts and then says "down for maintanence"

It's a shame the server wasnt more reliable, because servers where buckling under a 5,00 to 6,00 loads, which isnt much for what is ment to be one of the top european gaming sites.
Just brings me to ask why IGN dont have a problem

Awesome stuff! Just found out in time, and after some frustrating attempts to get the darn pages to load (I think it cost me 10-15 minutes), I got the beta code! More than 3000 had gone already by that time. The game had downloaded within an hour too, went at my max speed (0.5MB/s) all the way through.

And then the playing ... wow! I can't wait to play the full story mode, I just loved it. So disappointed when I discovered I'd already finished that part of the demo. It does make it a good incentive to try out the user created stuff though, and some of that was already surprisingly good. I've also messed around with the create bit for a while, and that looks pretty impressive too. It will take some time and effort to create a cool level though, but boy does that add depth to an already awesome game!

Online multiplayer also works great, really cool. Hope to be able to try out the offline multiplayer also sometime soon.

Well im one of the many who spent several hours with F5 and at the point of cliaming the key( several times) found that iit wouldnt process it.
Bummer.
Also miffed that there are so many yanks who got the key, EG should have sorted that out, i know its feasiable cos if i try to watch american shows on their Iplayers it says "You must be in US to watch" so im assuming "You must be in EU to claim" wouldnt be too hard(arent IP address region coded?)

On another note, anyone know the UK pre-order bonus's? like I know US have Nariko, Kratos, sticker book, pouch etc. but only thing ive seen over here is next months OPSM gets Kratos.
Be another Bummer if Yanks are only folks to get them stuff, especially as game is SCEE and in Manchaster at that( so i suppose i could get on bus n go beg at MM for a beta )

Only kidding, it looks charming as fuck, and when I finally scrape together my �300 (And convince my woman that it's money well spent) I'll no doubt be getting this game with the console.
Sounds like it was one mighty fuck up on here last night though, I thought Eurogamer was a pretty huuuge site now so why are their servers so effing terrible, the site only has to have live text streaming going on and it friggin implodes in on itself.

Before people whine, I have been reading eurogamer daily for nearly two years, but never created a profile because never needed to.
