Left 4 Dead 360 update beats cheaters

No more witches in the safe room.

Valve has released an update for the Xbox 360 version of zombie shooter Left 4 Dead that stops the proliferation of cheats and hacks in the game.

Last month, Ars Technica and others reported nightmare scenes of giant-sized players, and super-enemies like witches and tanks spawning in huge numbers in supposedly safe areas of the game. Like it was on a PC or something.

Now Joystiq has established that the title update to the game earlier this week has fixed all that.

In fact, Valve tackled the issue for games on its dedicated servers with a server-side fix last month. The latest update means the cheats are now blocked in player-hosted matches too, both on Xbox Live or via system link.

That's it. Slow news day.

    seems a bit pointless fixing it for system link, if people still want to do it they can just delete the patch

    And yet still no fixes for the plethora of other exploits.

    Also, slow news day? UGO JUST BOUGHT 1UP. HELLO?!?

    A witch in the safe room would be a hilarious start to any level.

    Like?

    Skipping crescendos, blocking doors/manholes with objects as infected, pulling people to instadeaths from certain spots as a smoker...

    Hell, if you throw in all the PC issues it starts to look ridiculous:

    Ta-da!

    @Dizzy

    I guess he means, the infected hitting that crate-thing to block the exit of the lift, smokers pulling people off the roof near the helicopter escape for instant deaths, where the survivors can smash through a door to avoid activating the lift and therefore avoiding a particlaurly nasty crescendo moment...

    They are the only ones I know of, but I guess there are probably quite a few more. Although they did say they were fixing at least two of these exploits soon I think, so hopefully won't be much of a problem for long. :)

    edit: Yossarian beat me to it. With fancy linkage too, bah :/

    Hmmm I see... a lot of those need tweaks to the maps, that will take some time.

    that was what that patch was then

    I had to read that three times before it made sense benno :p
  • MasterNameless #10 3 years ago

    Haha, me too. It makes sense, just confusing to the eyes...

    @ Dizzy, MasterNameless etc - I like to think of these as gamesmanship rather than 'exploits'. Especially the smoker insta-deaths, since anyone who plays this regularly will know exactly where the smokers will be hiding and will take that into account when moving around.

    @Yossarian
    It's not really in Eurogamer's interest to report on competitor activity I would think.

    Back on topic. This is good news. Now bring on a new level as 360 DLC.

    How have I never heard of UGO.com until this very comment thread?

    They have awesome surnames though: McCracken, Moses, LaRock, and Kennedy! They sound like a religious/politics themed wrestling team!

    That nv4_disp error gets me everytime I play a game through steam but especially Valve games. I hate it so much.

    Most of the things on that list are complete rubbish! There are duplicates, terrible descriptions, things that re arguably intentional, things that aren't bugs at all. Not to say it's perfect, of course not, but that list is not a good representation.

    Some of those bugs aren't bugs. Quite a few, actually, and some of them are expected because players do what they shouldn't be doying (free-roaming in spectator mode, for example). Still, there are far too many exploits and bugs that require fixing.

    Edit: A handful of those bugs repeat in the list to pad it, heh.

    I'm almost with roz123 on this, I've had some annoying issues but they've been very scarce. The most annoying thing I can think of is the survivors spamming the shove when you are a hunter; really frustrating because it's so fucking cheap.
