LBP 1.02 patch sorts out dodgy song

Religious intolerance defeated!

It's patch city and LittleBigPlanet's the mayor! After this morning's news of a 1.01 patch, heroic reader Luke informs us that 1.02 is now available.

This one does neuter Tourmani Diabaté's song "Tapha Niang", silencing the two lyrics borrowed from the Qur'an, putting the game into the state it will presumably be when you all get hold of it in two weeks' time. In actual fact, it removes the entire vocal track, leaving a pleasant instrumental.

There's no word on what else the patch does, but then you won't notice, since the game isn't out yet. Unless you're in the secret club, obviously, in which case you can join us sulking about how the game servers aren't online yet.

Check out our LittleBigPlanet review to keep your eyes on the prize.

Crikey... two patches already and the game isn't even out here for another two weeks! LOL
  • syphaa #2 3 years ago

They should have boosted the vocal levels rather than make it an instrumental, just to cause a bit more publicity!

I can't believe they patched and recalled all this, when Cliff Richard not only got away with releasing a prayer as a song, but it got to number 1? I found that offensive. And really, really awful to listen too. And I hate Cliff Richard. And Auld Lang Syne.

    Am i missing something?
If this patch fixes all the outrageous religious slurs, why did Sony insist on recalling all the disks?
  • Iora #7 3 years ago

Cos not everyone has access to the nets... and of those that do some will choose not to update and will be horrible and irrevocably curropted by it's taint.
  • kangarootoo #8 3 years ago

Because you can't gurantee that all copies of the game will be updated via PSN. The disc recall was clearly the real fix, with the patch being a backup for the few copies still "in the wild".
  • yegon #9 3 years ago

Well there's bound to be a few out there that are entirely offline. Although why they'd bother with LBP if they were permanently offline is a mystery.

Much like I'm sure there's a few out there with hdtv's who never bothered adjusting the display accordingly in settings :)

  • Triggerhappytel #16 3 years ago

Who is this patch for? If there is barely, what, a couple of thousand 'original' copies circulating at best, why bother with a patch when they've gone to all the trouble and expense of recalling it from the shops?

  • Les #18 3 years ago

Damn, my unfixed copy is still in transit... :(

Will play it unpatched first when it arrives to experience the game as it was intended. But it really makes me mad that other people think they should determine what is proper for me to listen to in my own fucking home.

  • illusiondance #21 3 years ago

wuh? the last i heard was that the muslim fella who performed the tune uses holy scripture all the time in his work. (along with countless of other musicians)
I want to know exactly who triggered this ridiculous situation and flagged this song issue as a "problem".
LBP looks really good but sony just creep me out.

Well, come on. EG has become very tabloidish. Or as someone else put it, 'The Fox News of gaming sites.'
  • konstantinos #26 3 years ago

actually this should have read religious intolerance d-e-f-e-n-d-e-d...
(just in case it costs us sales/product persecution... "clever", Sony...)

    cheers...

"Once again, Islam has had us bending over backwards and pandering to it's twisted, poisonous and evil viewpoint."

    That should read 'religion' IMO.
  • coomber #29 3 years ago

Actually, Aspic, any rational atheist who has read the Koran would agree with dream.
  • Ryze #30 3 years ago

Because millions of people don't plug the console into bb, or may not have on purpose.

Plus all of this BS is great publicity for the game.
  • JediMasterMalik #31 3 years ago

How is not wanting a game to offend Muslims pandering to or succumbing to religious intolerance? Do you guys even know what that means? No, of course you don't.

The real religious intolerance is the kinds of comments articles about religion produce. You should really be ashamed of yourselves, though I know you're not.
  • bonker #32 3 years ago

I wonder if Sony went to the original 11 year old who posted in the forum and asked him if it was OK with him to just take the lyrics out but leave the music in?
  • KreyAtiv #33 3 years ago

Well it didn't take long to get the 1.02 patch up and running. Must be in high gear over at M.M. headquaters.
  • dave.k #34 3 years ago

Can't blame Muslims for this one, guys. I think that Muslim gamers were happy with a patch. It was Sony that decided to up it to a full recall. Bloody Sony management ... a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.
  • Widge #35 3 years ago

Yes, I'm sure the patch to replace the song with an instrumental was some serious tough work.
  • Les #36 3 years ago

"The real religious intolerance is the kinds of comments articles about religion produce."

I hope you're not serious. Nobody is suggesting we should force religious people to stop being religious or that they should change their beliefs. Don't think you can or should get any more tolerant towards religion than that. How is saying "listen chap, you can believe all you want but don't force your beliefs on me" religious intolerance?!

As for the ones that use muslims as a synonym for foreigners, that's not religious intolerance, that's xenophobia. Which might be even worse as it's about as irrational as religion is.
  • SpyroViper #37 3 years ago

Why did they put any religious stuff in the game in the first place? They should of known that it could/would cause some sort of trouble.. especially borrowing a track from the qua'ran.. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT! Stupid MM.

  • Les #38 3 years ago

"Why did they put any religious stuff in the game in the first place? They should of known that it could/would cause some sort of trouble.. especially borrowing a track from the qua'ran.. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT! Stupid MM."

Probably because their arabian is about as good as mine coupled with not having memorized all q'uran verses and a little bit of not being brought up by religious fanatics... But you can be assured that for quite some time Western developers will not use any arabian song in a game anymore...
  • JaysonG #39 3 years ago

    Very good publicity
  • JediMasterMalik #40 3 years ago

You people are really stupid. Nothing negative comes from not hearing the vocals on a background track. Something negative does come from people who are offended by what they hear. If they can eliminate that, it's best for them and consumers.

Some of you act as if you had a right to hear that track unaltered in the game. You don't. However and whenever Sony release the game, the product is theirs for your consumption. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Don't act as if you've been wronged.
  • Les #41 3 years ago

"You people are really stupid. Nothing negative comes from not hearing the vocals on a background track. Something negative does come from people who are offended by what they hear. If they can eliminate that, it's best for them and consumers."

For me it's not so much about not being able to hear the vocals (though I must say I quite like the song as it is). I think it's principally wrong to curb freedom of speech by religious intolerance. Restricting fundamental human rights is very serious indeed and IMO much more negative than people being offended because they believe they've been instructed to be offended and who could always choose to not buy the product.
  • JediMasterMalik #42 3 years ago

You really need to learn what religious intolerance is. As well as what it means to restrict fundamental human rights.

It's laughable to think this is even remotely a human rights issue.
  • bonker #43 3 years ago

Fuck me JMM, show a bit of foresight can ya?
  • GrumpyLlama #44 3 years ago

Why are people being so ignorant about this? The fact is that a large number of Muslims find it offensive to set the Quoran to music. These people are not fanatics, terrorists or foreigners. This is a game aimed at a broad demographic and so Sony have taken the only sensible option by recalling the game. They would have done the same if it had contained any other material that a large number of people found offensive, such as swearing, extreme violence or burning crosses. Putting the song in there in the first place was a mistake. This is not about freedom of speech or art. The song has not been banned it is just not appropriate for this game.

@coomber Actually, Aspic, any rational atheist who has read the Koran would agree with dream.

i'm rational, non-religious and have read the koran, but it's ignorant pricks like you that sour the word 'atheist'.

You're mixing up a couple of things:

    1) Given that we live in the world we live in where many people believe crazy things and many other people act like it's completely normal, could we blame a company from removing perceived offensive stuff from a game in order to maximize the appeal of the game and thus profits? No, not really.
    2) Is it a good thing that people believe crazy things which leads to them being offended when nobody has even the slightest intent to offend them? I'd say no.
    3) Can we change this? Possibly, but pretending that (self)censorship is a good won't really get us anywhere.

But anyway, got my uncensored copy in the mail yesterday and loving it very much. Furthermore, this game has accomplished the unfathomable task of getting my girlfriend to grab a PS controller and actually loving it.
