Kojima's making an adventure game

Japanese collaborator spills the beans.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is working on an adventure game, says collaborator Chiyomaru Shikura - boss of Japanese media company 5pb.

He told 4Gamer (via Kotaku) that Kojima's new game will be the third entry in "a conceptual science series". Which series could he mean?

"The meaning of why I am personally connected to this project is that this is the third entry in a conceptual science series," said Shikura. "And that it is a project with Kojima."

"Kojima told me that he wanted to make an adventure game. We're at the still stage where we need to go to a secluded spot in the mountains and hash this project out, and thus, we don't have any of the minute details hammered out."

Kojima was pictured with Shikura and No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda earlier this year, shaking hands and smiling. Suda's role in the project wasn't mentioned.

Shikura's 5pb has found success porting erotic games and dating simulations. All Kojima has said is that his next game will "challenge a certain type of taboo".

Kojima's most recent project was of course Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on PSP. Oli Welsh reviewed the game for Eurogamer.

3rd entry? Damn, that rules out Snatcher 2 then.
  • ACCH #5 2 years ago

    1 Snatcher
    2 Policenauts
    3 ............

    Please
  • Shikasama #6 2 years ago

Hah, I saw this on Kotaku and my first thought was 'I wonder how long it will be before this is up on EG'.

    Yeah count me in, Shikura-San

Kojima is one of the most overrated game designers of all time. The thought of him doing an 'adventure' game, or anything where plot and characters are all-important, is pretty depressing.
  • mcwildcard #9 2 years ago

He's done an adventure game before; Snatcher

    It was really rather good.
  • X3Entente #10 2 years ago

metal gear solid 3 ,ie the best game ever begs to differ barbellion. troll harder dude. At least critisize him for alledgly making interactive movies and hours of pretencious emo cutscenes blah blah blah instead of focusing on gameplay. He revolutinoised the production values in story telling in videogames and cinematic presentation.
  • darkmorgado #11 2 years ago

    Metal Gear: Hentai then?
  • darkmorgado #12 2 years ago

If he is doing a new game in the snatcher/policenauts series, it would be nice to finally get proper western releases.
  • GamesConnoisseur #13 2 years ago

Get the feeling it's Policenaunt or it's modern take, ie Heavy Rain japanesed.
  • Shinetop #14 2 years ago

For all the negatives Barbellion is getting, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the headline. The Japanese way of storytelling and chareacter design just isn't my cup of tea, and those are the two most important factors in adventure games.
  • taurus82 #15 2 years ago

    Thank you Kojima, thank you.
I could never get into the MGS games, but something like Policenauts will definitely interest me.
  • sonicyoda #16 2 years ago

    @ACCH

I didn't realise Policenauts was technically Snatcher 2!

    Excited now!
  • Bander #17 2 years ago

ACCH nailed it, hopefully. Snatcher and Policenauts were both adventure games set in the future. Policenauts wasn't really a sequel, any more than Snatcher is related to Metal Gear, or one William Gibson novel is connected to another, but they are certainly thought to be in the same series.
  • Kaminari #18 2 years ago

    You got it all wrong.

It's obviously the long-awaited sequel to Snatcher and Policenauts, with more panties and teenagers. With some luck, it will be a full-fledged 2D digital comic adventure, with real bits of pixel art in it.

Will challenge a certain type of taboo?

This is definitely a dating simulation where you have to seduce both your mum and your sister. There, I called it.

Or a game where you have to make Kojima laugh. Either game will involve two years of cutscenes.

    MPSG...Metal Porn Solid Gear

    lol that was funny.

Oh, cool, so he's finally made it to 1993. I wonder what's going to happen when gets up to 2000 and Deus Ex!

    Gibson's "Bridge" Trilogy says hi!

    /pedant
  • Bander #24 2 years ago

    Darkmorgado: Okay. Oops.

Wasn't "challenge a certain type of taboo" a comment made about Metal Gear Solid: Rising, what with it being his next game at the time Kojima said it? Cutting enemies up and being able to see cross-sections of their bones and guts and stuff would be taboo in Japan, for a mainstream videogame release. Kojima probably knows this better than anyone, given how each version of Snatcher ended up more censored than the last.
  • darkmorgado #25 2 years ago

I guess it depends on which culture he is talking about challenging, as obviously we have very different taboos from the east. So a game focussed on sex, relationships etc could be considered "taboo" over here but normal in japan, while focusing on overt physical violence might be more shocking in the east (as you mentioned).

I think he said Rising would challenge the idea of what a Metal Gear game should be (given its focus on combat and violence as opposed to stealth) rather than cultural ideas, though I may be wrong.

Bottom line - his comment means nothing unless we know the context in which he meant it, and given that this is Kojima where 99% of the time noone has a bloody clue what he is going on about, I doubt we will get a satisfactory explanation until the damn thing is revealed in more detail.
  • spiritsnake #26 2 years ago

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!
no adventure games from him please, please!!!!
  • SpaceMonkey77 #27 2 years ago

This is good news. While MGS can be very hit and miss with its story and cinematics, that stuff is better suited to adventure games. I'll look forward to what he has planned.

I still find Konami to be quite too laid back at times. While Capcom push their adventure games on DS and iPhone, Konami can't be asked to push Snatcher and Policenauts on the same platforms. These would be a no brainer to anyone else.

Come on Konami. MGS coat tails aren't enough.
  • ronuds #28 2 years ago

Is it just me, or does it seem as if every other EG article is about Kojima in one way or another? Kojima's doing this... Kojima's doing that... Kojima likes... Kojima doesn't like. Who gives an eff about Kojima!

I think EG can legtimately change the site's name to kojimagamer.com.

    @ronuds

I have seen the same argument recently levied about Molyneux (all the Fable/ Kinect coverage), Myamoto (Zelda, Mario, Nintendo plans), Kotick (the ongoing Activision saga with IW etc) and Schafer (Brutal Legend, Psychonauts, etc).

The way I see it, if lots of people are all arguing that you are giving bias to lots of different people, then you are being pretty balanced in your coverage. Look at all the stupid forum arguments that say "EG IS XBOX BIASED" and "EG LOVES THE PS3". If you have both people on opposing sides accusing bias, then overall you are balanced. I get regularly shouted at for being a PS3 fanboy as much as I do for being an Xbox and Wii fanboy (despite owning over 12 systems overall), so I just think "well, they all cancel each other out overall".
  • Phishfood #30 2 years ago

Is it a horror game? I heard Goichi Suda was working on one.
  • Sonic_D #31 2 years ago

'Hash the project out'.... Kojima in pothead shocker...
  • cucuc #32 2 years ago

    >the third entry in "a conceptual science series"

This is inaccurate, and Kotaku already fixed it in their news article.

In the original Japanese text, the words were roughly "the 3rd entry in the Fictional Science series, AND Mr. Kojima's project".

The Fictional Science series is 5pb's own adventure game series, comprised of Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate so far. Kojima's project is an entire separate game from that.
  • Razorus #33 2 years ago

Remember guys, if it is indeed a Policenauts game, and if it released in the West, you can thank me partly for it happening. Why, you ask? WHY!? Because I told Kojima to make it happen. And he seemed interested. No lie.
