Killzone 2 double XP weekend

Developer celebrates anniversary.

Guerrilla Games plans to celebrate tomorrow's fifth anniversary of Killzone PS2's European release with a double XP weekend and other activities.

According to lead multiplayer designer Eric Boltjes, writing on the PlayStation blog, any game set up between 27th and 30th November will accrue extra experience points.

What's more, the developer is planning to run a retro tournament using only the Beach Head and Southern Hills maps from the second downloadable content pack - the connection being that both are remakes of Killzone 1 levels.

If for some reason you don't have said DLC pack, and can't be bothered to buy it, Boltjes adds that there will be DLC code giveaways over on Killzone.com, along with various features to celebrate the milestone.

As to how you might celebrate it around here, we'd suggest returning to our Killzone PS2 review, but since we gave it 5/10 that probably won't suit the occasion.

Best to read our Killzone 2 review instead, because Guerrilla really came good. We hope to one day live in a world where everyone spells its name correctly.

I shall be playing a bit of KZ2 at the weekend then, since i've now finished and platinum'd AC2. I think i'm at rank 14, so 1 more to go. I think Naughty Dog are doing something with U2 this weekend too, so it says on VG247.

I re-read the KZ1 review and notice that EG was much less forgiving than now

I think I shall be giving this a go over the weekend.

MW2 is good enough, but there were a lot of thing KZ2 did better - rolling objectives; real tactical differences between the pre-set classes (as opposed to just different ways of killing people) and in my opinion, the map design in KZ2 was streets ahead of the vast majority in MW2.

Retro tournament with maps from second DLC.

    What is retro about that?

@jambo, re-read he article. Beachhead and Southernhills are both re-imagined / designed versions of KZ1 multiplayer maps. They're the maps from the 2nd DLC pack.

As a fresh-faced PS3 owner, I only got KZ2 because it was FREE! But after playing a bit of online, i am thoroughly addicted. I love how the gametype changes constantly in a session. As I love me some objective gametypes, its a vast improvement from my halo 3 experiences.

But I also like the lack of Auto-aim (or at least its huge reduction)! Ill be in the 'Killzone' this weekend fo' sho'.

@52pickup: you "platinum'd" AC2 ? stop making up stupid retarded new verbs

I might go back to this at the weekend then. It's not the most user-friendly game I've played, but in terms of sheer number of options and player customisation, KZ2 is streets ahead of any other online game I've played on PS3.

Double XP weekend. I don't see this type of thing done with many games. It promotes incentive for more people to keep playing and it works well. Glad to see more DLC heading our way as well. I still don't think they nailed the control system perfectly but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the multiplayer still. Modern Warfare 2 has a great deal of patching needed as well as some symmetrical maps. Killzone 2 and Halo 3 are the best console shooters in terms of balance and competitiveness currently and the ongoing support both are getting is what helps that. Infinity Ward didn't do enough after launch besides a couple minor patches and dlc. I'm proud that Guerilla has been keeping up with the fan requests. It's what sets it apart from Resistance 2, Gears2, and RSV2.
