iPhone Doom III spin-off imminent News

iPhone News by Tom Bramwell

11 June, 2009

In addition to Doom Classic, id Software is preparing to release Doom Resurrection for iPhone next week.

According to VentureBeat and Gamasutra interviews, it's based on Doom III but takes place in a different part of the Mars station.

Still a first-person shooter, it uses a tilt-based aiming system rather than tapping (which was too efficient, apparently), and the graphics are downsampled artwork from Doom III. Monsters and weapons should be familiar too.

John Carmack has said that the game has eight levels representing about five hours of gameplay, and runs at 30fps on the latest iPod Touch and a bit slower on older models. It will also take advantage of iPhone 3.0 software features after the 19th June launch of the update.

Doom Resurrection has been developed by Carmack and a six-man team at Escalation Studios, and is not to be confused with Doom Classic (unless you're me, and you're tired).

Look out for our review soon after Doom Resurrection hits the App Store. Check out the first screenshot to see how it's shaping up.

What is id Software's obsession with the iPhone? Can't they just release Doom on the DS or PSP? That didn't need much power or a mouse or anything!

I imagine there's a lot more hoops to jump through when it comes to publishing on those platforms compared to the iphone.

I was just going to say the same thing - why not the DS? I've already got Doom on there in dual screen. Quake runs brilliantly with full touchpad/mouse support, so why the hell arent they supporting the worlds most popular console with official optimised releases? Seems daft. Havent heard anything about Quake Arena DS either that was announced 2 years back......
Come on id! Get to it!

I think this is just Carmack in an extended "I made my fortune, now I can do what I want" phase, and what he wants is to fuck about with mobile gaming. That's fine I suppose, but it'd be good if people (by which I primarily mean the gaming press) stopped taking this sort of thing seriously. And please, iD, stop pissing about and start making proper games again. I note Rage was apparently not visible at E3. What are you all doing?

Judging from the screenshots.. there are no shadows in this version, just ambient lighting.
