Guinness lists top 50 games of all time

Mario Kart at No. 1, Tetris in second place.

Guinness World Records has released a list of the top 50 most important and influential videogames of all time.

The list was decided on by "a crack team of industry experts" and some girl called Ellie. Games were ranked on their initial impact, lasting legacy, how fun they were to play and the colour of the box. Maybe not the last one.

The number one spot goes to Super Mario Kart. It was the best-selling racer on the SNES, fact fans, with 8 million units sold. And the N64 (9 million) and the GameCube (7 million) and the DS (10 million).

Tetris is in second place, followed by Grand Theft Auto and Super Mario World. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was in fifth place, meaning it's officially better than Halo at six.

The list appears in the astonishingly good new book Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2009, which someone at Eurogamer may or may not have a vested interest in because they helped write it. The book has already been met with huge critical acclaim on a scale previously unheard of in human history, with some analysts predicting it will be remembered for all time as the best work of literature ever produced.

The Guinness World Record's Gamer's Edition 2009 carries an RRP of GBP 15, but it's available now on Amazon for just GBP 7.49. Part of the proceeds from sales will go to help women forced to write acerbic reviews of rubbish Wii games all day.

Here's that top 50 list in full. FIGHT!

    Pretty good list. I approve.

Please note it's clearly a list of VIDEOGAMES (ie console) and that's why there's no PC stuff.

Fantastic list! But Lego Star Wars? Starfox 64? I guess its all down to opinion but a great list nevertheless!
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #3 3 years ago

Lego Batman is better than Lego Star Wars.

At first glance it looks ok, but I disagree. All time and they mostly seem to be modern. Where's all the classics? Monkey Island? Battlezone? System Shock 2? They don't even have Warcraft of any iteration. Pff!
  • nightstorm101 #5 3 years ago

    Lego Starwars!?!?! Come off it!

    Where is Shenmue?
  • HEAVYface #6 3 years ago

lists are subjective - but theres too many 'good but not great' titles in it.

surely the sims (replace with chosen game) should of been in there or something etc
  • BiscuitBase #7 3 years ago

I think it's a list of VIDEOgames as opposed to computer games so it doesn't have any pc-exclusive titles (or amiga/c64/spectrum exclusive titles come to that)
  • Buztafen #8 3 years ago

FFXII above FFVII......what in blue hell have these guys been smoking!!!

top 50 most important and influential videogames of all time.

Now I have absolutely no interest in World of Warcraft but even I know a game that has millions of subscribed users, episodes of popular cartoons basing whole episodes around it, and daily mentions in the mainstream press should probably be considered in the top 50 important and influential games.
  • Babbage #11 3 years ago

My big hairy baby makers have more credability than this list!
  • BiscuitBase #12 3 years ago

I'll say it again, it's a list of video games, world of warcraft is technically a computer game. If there was a 360 port of WoW then I'm sure it would be up there.

That's why there's no Doom, Quake, Command & Conquer etc...

As with all of these kinds of lists, there's an awful lot to disagree with. In my case, putting Halo at number 6 is laughable. I think even Halo-lovers will be able to come up with 10 games head and shoulders above Halo, but kudos for the list including Ico somewhere. :)
  • Darren #14 3 years ago

A very good list actually with the exception of Street Fighter II but then I only got the chance to play it for the first time recently and so fail to see what all the fuss was about. Oblivion would be much higher for me though, definitely top five, and Banjo-Kazooie would be in there (one of my all-time favourite games).

Super Mario Kart at number one... hmmm... that would languish somewhere near the bottom of my top games list as it's another game I've only played in the last five years so I can't view it through rose-tinted spectacles any more than I can SF II! ;)

Nice to see under-appreciated gems like PGR 4 and OutRun 2 in there too, although I'm surprised to see FFXII above FFVII.
  • Hardin #15 3 years ago

    - Dune II - the game that launched the RTS genre? The forerunner to Red Alert series/Supreme Commander etc?
    - Civilisation - any of them. Please? How the hell can that not be included?
    - Populous - the original god game?
    - The Sims - probably the best selling series of all time - not my cup of tea - but surely worth inclusion!
    - Total War Series - Any of them? Completely redefined/recreated the war game!
    - World of Warcraft - Surely those 11 million people stumping up a tenner a month aint playing some useless piece of crap.
    - Championship/Football Manager - FFS this series of games has been cited in divorce cases. Huge and loyal following how can it not be in there?
    - Secret of Monkey Island (or other LucasArts efforts) - Goddamn I am getting annoyed now.

It seems the creators of this list have never played a PC game in their lives and particularly never any game that involved 'strategic' rather than 'twitch' skills!

    Hang them all now!

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    :p

Since when was The Orange Box a game. I've got that and it has Half Life 2 and Portal and Team Fortress but I can't seem to find a game called Orange Box.

I wonder if the 'astonishingly good' Guinness list of greatest pop music contains any compilations. Best album of all time, 'Now That's What I Call the 80's!'

  • HEAVYface #17 3 years ago

its a pretty crappy idea to make a distinction between home computers (computer games) and consoles (videogames) it just makes no sense because they ane one and the same...this list should include games released on computer, hell its got arcade machines in it, of which a few are PC based....

also all new consoles are just a PC in a nice box anyway. stupid.list.
  • metalangel #18 3 years ago

The list is rubbish - not least of all because Mario fucking Kart is no. 1.
  • lambtron #19 3 years ago

Good to see someone acknowledging that Super Mario Kart is the best version. All the more recent versions have been poor shadows of it's glory.
  • MrChuckles #20 3 years ago

Top 50 'Console' Games of All Time i guess?

No RTS's, 2 Western RPG (Found on consoles), no God Games....

Bah, apart from Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and Advance Wars (All Japanese strategy games) and KOTOR & Oblivion everything is arcadey.

Where are Populous, Dune, Starcraft, Baldur's Gate, The Sims, World Of Warcraft, Total War Series, Civilisation?

And where are ANY games from the 8 bit era which all laid the foundations for this list which seems to start in the late 90's.

What about Elite, Grand Prix or Manic Miner?

What about Pong or Gravity Wars, they had a bigger lasting legacy than any of these.

Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Galaxy & Super Mario 64, ffs, how on earth can they ALL be in the list, they are the same game updated using refinements of the current generation.

    Stupid list.....

    Must....Care....Less.....

the list is a fucking joke, nothing from origin->looking glass->ion storm->irrational school of games, the definitive most influential set of games the industry has ever seen most notably deus ex.

how the fuck can you get away with a list like this without half life in it? what were you's smoking? no doom? worst of all not a single RTS!
  • paulf #25 3 years ago

  • stepneg #26 3 years ago

All my favourites are in there, I would change the order but otherwise good list.
  • bluem4gic #27 3 years ago

    This list is all wrong

and if one you idiots at Eurogamer contributed to it god help us.

How can you write a publication such as this website and tell me Resident Evil IV is more influential than Resident Evil? WTF has it influnenced since it's release?

Bioshock should be System Shock 2

Super Mario 64 is not even in the top ten even though it influenced many designers to imitate it in their own 3D iterations

    Where are the RTS games?

Lego Fucking Star Wars why is that so high?

Why is Final Fantasy XII above Final Fantasy VII?

The problem here is there is gamers who born before the advent of gaming and gamers who were born when games were freely available on multiple formats. I like to call them "the Playstation generation"

Clarity is needed on what this list is about

If your talking about the top 50 most influential games. This list is all wrong

But if you talking about the the most fun games to play based on lasting appeal. Then most entries are correct, bar some odd entries such as bioshock. You tell me who is still playing that game
  • marilena #28 3 years ago

Having 2 criteria, one of which is highly subjective, certainly gave the crack team of exerts a lot of maneuvering room. If they would have wanted some responsibility, they would have made 2 separate lists instead and would have a had a comprehensive list of importance criteria. But that would have been hard.
  • Ihya #29 3 years ago

No Doom but Lego Star Wars is there????
  • Concrete #30 3 years ago

Dune 2, Doom and Quake? LOL great list . .
  • secombe #31 3 years ago

Was the entire field of experts under 20 years old? Hardly anything from the early consoles in that list.

I demand a recount for Psycho Fox :)
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #32 3 years ago

I think if you filter it through a "console games" lens, then it's not a bad list. Certainly in terms of influence and all that it's seriously lacking early computer games (or indeed things like, y'know, Pong, or Asteroids, or friggin' Space War...). But on the whole I reckon it's an alright list.

Lack of Guybrush and Gordon is still shitty, though.
  • Zomoniac #33 3 years ago

The list either needs to be best or most influential, trying some stupid hybrid of the two is just silly.
  • GamesConnoisseur #34 3 years ago

Yes console games rather than wider Computing games inc all the classical games. People do love to hate Halo like its cool to do, its did have a big impact at the time and introduced quite a few neat features.

Also its introduced the franchise and was singlularly important to MS and Xbox console, Killzone tried to emulate it but fallen on it face at the time and now i m glad to be able to get my hands today on the sequel!

what can i say that hasn't already been said? maybe then to reiterate: the omission of FFVII from the "most important and influential videogames of all time" is poor. And excluding WoW on the grounds of the appalling perception that PC games aren't videogames is BS. with the numerous MMOs heading to the more commercially viable consoles, it's clear WoW is the most influential videogame of recent times.

edit. lol. need to check my eye sight! completely missed FFVII!

  • homerramone #39 3 years ago

    What everyone said !

Few things in there that clearly should be - and a lot more that shouldnt
And lots that should that isnt.

Shouldnd SPACE INVADERS or GALAXIAN (or whatever) be there ? Pretty influential I suspect. And with the current trend of dual stick shooters I rather suspect ROBOTRON should be there too - at the very least Smash TV...

And wheres PACMAN for that matter!!!

Looks to me a lot more like a list of someones favorite games
  • The_Inquisitor #40 3 years ago

Shouldn't Grand Theft Auto have III at the end, as I can't understand the original being on the list, despite it being a fantastic game.

My only complaint is Shenmue isn't on the list... fools!
  • Fellblade #41 3 years ago

Three GTA titles in the top 50?
  • Psiloc #42 3 years ago

FFXII and FFVII being that way round is just odd. In a Top 50 of 'important and influential' videogames as opposed to a look at the quality it's hard to agree with that. Similarly RE4/RE1.

That being said arguing this list is one of the most pointless things I can imagine doing.
  • miiiguel #43 3 years ago

Tetris and no Pac Man ?

But, funnier than the list are the video-games elders who dig to bash everything.
  • marilena #44 3 years ago

They also eliminated arcade games, I think.

I don't know exactly how their thinking went... Eliminating PC and arcade games from an all-time list seems arbitrary. Why just "videogames"?

Also, the list is wrong straight off the bat. There is no videogame more important and influential than Tetris. There are several games that could go above it in a list that includes all games, but as videogames go, it's number 1, no two ways about it.

    Final Fantasy XII, lol!

At least with Call of Duty 4 I can agree that it will prove influential and important in due time, but Final Fantasy XII? And Oblivion? Why not Morrowind, at least?

some choices are rather dubious, mario kart as #1?

  • Rash' #52 3 years ago

i hate this perception that PC games aren't videogames. i mean come on! where is the distinction in play? i can play halo on PC and console and yet one is a videogame while the other isn't, just because of the platform it runs on? seems stupid to me. what meaningful distinction does computer vs video game serve anymore? by computer science definition any game played on a video display is a videogame... So screw your list guinness.

  • HEAVYface #57 3 years ago

also someone said they decided to omit arcade games (for some arbitrary reason no doubt), yet i see 4 games in the list that had their debut in the arcade...

they're not even sticking to their own criteria, whilst ommiting all the classics people have mentioned up the thread.useless.
  • skillian #58 3 years ago

Top 50 most important and influential videogames of all time (not including the systems with the most influential games).
  • CHAZBIGPOTATO #59 3 years ago

  • McBradders #60 3 years ago

Ugh, probably one of the worst lists ever.
  • marilena #61 3 years ago

The 'no-arcade games' rule was a guess on my part. how else would you justify the absence of Pong, Pacman, Spave Invaders?

Funny, I only now noticed they have 3 GTA games on the list. 3? Really?

Looking back, I do think that this list is actually not worth discussing at all. It was probably concocted over lunch and had a requirement to be easy to relate to by kids.

I just discovered, via IMDB, a list made in the way that lists should be made. Clear explanation for the criteria, sound rules (one performance per actor, for instance) and detailed explanations for each choice.

But again, that's hard to do.
  • GiarcYekrub #62 3 years ago

Woo Hoo I have played seriously 26 of them games here are the 24 I've never/barely played:

    1. Call of Duty 4
    2. Gran Turismo

    4. Lego Star Wars Complete Saga
    5. Tekken 2
    6. Wii Sports

    8. Guitar Hero
    9. Project Gotham Racing 4
    10. Super Mario Galaxy
    11. Ico
    12. Chrono Trigger
    13. Gunstar Heroes
    14. Advance Wars
    15. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Bollocks, where's Virtua Fighter? Shite list. Some fantastic games there but Mario Kart better than Tetris? I fucking LOVe Mario Kart but Really? Anyway, whoever compiled the list could have written it almost identicle to mine but I'd still want to shoot the Fucker. The Orange Box? It's a fucking compilation not a game! It's like those wankers who, when asked for their favourite film, say 'The Star Wars Trilogy' or 'The Lord of the Rings trilogy'. Cunts. Those people usually don't reall know jack shit about cinema so can we presume the same thing about these Arseholes? Including whoever it is that writes for Eurogamer?

    Where is "Nintendogs"? Seriously.

It brought countless numbers of non-gamers to the DS, it sold absolutely legions of copies as a series. And yet it is missing when things like CoD 4 are present.

I'm not saying CoD 4 is not an extremely good games, but "most important and influential"?

Where is "The Sims"? Where is "Populous"? Where is "Wii Fit" and "EyeToy"? Where is "PacMan"? Where is "Space Invaders"? Where is "Donkey Kong"? Where is the "Space Harrier" arcade cabinet? Is there even a single light gun game in that list?

Jesus wept. I could go on, but I'm drained of all motivation. I don't want to cause offense to anyone, and normally I don't ratty about these things. But the Guiness Book of Records is a serious and historical publication, yet this list seems to have been compiled by people who are a) hardcore gamers and b) not much older than 25. If this is going down in history as the most important and influential games of all time... OF ALL TIME... I can only wonder what kind of quality assurance the Guiness people are running these days.

Utterly disappointing. Sorry Ellie, but I hope you see where I am coming from. I don't what version of the word "influential" was being used here, but it wasn't one that I recognise.

  • kangarootoo #69 3 years ago

Doom and Wolfenstein establised the entire FPS genre, within which several of the existing listed games sit.

    /turns purple and faints again
  • marilena #70 3 years ago

Actually, there don't seem to be any handheld games there. They used a very narrow definition of "videogame", no doubt. Even allowing for that, the list is poor.

(I was sure I already made this comment, but it seems to not be here.)
  • dustrat #71 3 years ago

Hm, no Mass Effect and no Fallout 3. At least one of those games should be on the list.
  • Xerx3s #72 3 years ago

Sorry but that list is absolutely shockingly bad. Lemme guess, you had a team of console fanboys on crack?
  • sneetch #73 3 years ago

    @kangarootoo
But the Guiness Book of Records is a serious and historical publication

    Naw, it used to be.

I got it this years one for Christmas and it was far from a serious publication. Too many "Most bees worn as a beard" or "Longest distance covered while unicycling backwards by a left-handed woman" nonsense and not enough "Fastest time to run 100m" style records for my liking.

Reading some of the nonsense in it almost caused my brain to shut down so I handed it over to my niece who enjoyed the 3D pictures more than anything else (old-tech 3D glasses). To people planning on future record attempts: you may be the person who ate the most live beetles in 1 minute but it's really not noteworthy. It's no fantastic human achievement.
  • Xerx3s #74 3 years ago

BiscuitBase: Your logic is flawed. On the one hand you say that if there was a console port of wow, it would be in there, but on the other hand you say that a game like doom (which has to be the most ported game of all time) isn't up there for that reason. Also, removing the PC is stupid beyond reason, simply because the pc and it's predecessors are responsible for inventing and innovating about 90% of all genres.
  • Cannibal #75 3 years ago

Where's the Guinness World Records game in that list!?!?! Guess they didn't pay you enough.
  • evild_edd #76 3 years ago

Any top 50/100 list (regardless of justifications) that excludes Shenmue, Rez, and Daytona is either compiled by:

    non-gamers
    people without souls
    morons
    someone having a laugh
    or all of the above

    .
  • evild_edd #77 3 years ago

    @GiarcYekrub

Never seriously played Outrun 2, CoD4, PES 4 (still the best!!!), SMG, Advance Wars (!!!), Bioshock, or SEGA Rally.....

    .....

.....really? You've got some catching up to do mate!!!! ;0)
  • smelly #78 3 years ago

what a completely pointless and meaningless list..

    Congratulations!

(sarcasm) Im sure bioshock is really influential....
  • andywilkie35 #79 3 years ago

I think Bioshock is more influential that "Wii Family Trainer 3: Lets Get Silly" or other such shovelware

Great to see Mazza Kart at number 1, I played that to death back in the day, still give it a whirl every once in a while.

Surprised to see Final Fantasy XII that high above Final Fantasy VII considering that the latter raised JRPG awareness in the West considerably.
  • kangarootoo #80 3 years ago

    @sneetch

Hmm, looks like I'm stuck the past (in an age where quality and standards meant something. "Harumph" /taps pipe out on servant's shoe).

    @dustrat

I would in no way dispute that both Mass Effect and Fallout 3 are both great games (a coiuple of my favourite in recent years), but I would question whether either of them are influential.

They are both within well trodden genres, they both sell to an existing market whose borders are pretty well defined, they don't do anything that revolutionary in terms of interface or presentation.

For me, any game that can be defined as "important and influential", ESPECIALLY when it is suffixed by "of all time" has to have pushed the industry in a new direction. Either by creating a new genre of gaming, or by profoundly changing the gaming market.

PacMan did exactly that by creating a household name franchise out of a video game. WiiFit and Braintraining did that by putting gaming firmly in the mainstream line of sight (Phillip Schofield and Fern Britain advertising a video game on prime time terrestrial TV). Doom/Wolfenstein did that by creating the FPS genre.

So you see what I mean I hope, whilst FO3 and MS are both great games, they are evolution rather than revolution. If neither game had been made, the games industry would almost certainly keep on rolling in its current direction with little or no change. In my book, an influential game should change the industry that surrounds it in some way. Most of the published list has done nothing of the sort.
  • kangarootoo #81 3 years ago

    @andywilkie35

I loved Bioshock, but who did it influence and in what way? Can its influence really be compared to something like (for example) Populous?

I aint saying its influenced anything, I'm sure there's a number of things on that list that haven't influenced much (e.g. PGR4, I love that game and its another I've played for hours on end but it hasn't exactly influenced anything after it?)

I was merely taking issue with Smelly's repeated trolling of anything that isn't Wii based. I've got a Wii and I play it a fair bit because it has got some great games. Just can't stand the attitude! :-)

One thing I think we can all agree on is that any list like this isn't going to please everyone

What about the top Game Characters of all time. Here's my top ten:

    Mario
    Link
    Sonic the Hedgehog
    Pacman
    Vincent Valentine
    Guybrush Threepwood
    Cloud Strife
    Yoshi
    Lara Croft
    Kirby
  • kangarootoo #85 3 years ago

    @andywilkie35

Well the anti-trolling is fair enough. But surely being influential is pretty important if that is the name of the list, no?

I shall bow out now. I'm sounding like a stuck record harping on as I do. My closing comment is that just because you like a game a great deal, it doesn't make it influential. Most of my very favourite games aren't influential, but that is why they shouldn't be in that list.

This is me, at 4:15pm GMT, shutting up.

It appears according to this list that the "golden era" of gaming consists largely of games post-1999 with very few from the mid-to-late-90s. The early arcade / PC era of the 80s has been forgotten and/or ignored. In fact most PC games despite their groundbreaking work in many genres are not on this list.

The definition of all time to me means games that were historically "relevant" and/or "innovative" that were great to play.

    This list is bogus.
  • secombe #88 3 years ago

Also struggling to see how two 3D iterations of GTA can both make it onto such a list. I could understand why GTA and one of the 3D efforts could make the list as they've both been pretty influential in their own way.

Certainly a bizarre list, hard to see how things such as PGR4 can make it when then are genuinely classic original 3D racers missing (Daytona, for one)

Surprised nobody has mentioned the lack of Sensible Soccer, either.
  • robg #89 3 years ago

Ugh, probably one of the worst lists ever.

Anyone who cheerfully puts GTAIII above Zelda: Ocarina of Time is, simply, a fucking idiot. Or someone who hasn't played either of them.

And Mario Kart number 1? Just... no.

(That's the problem with lists like these - they're divisive and basically pointless. But they do get the hits up)

  • patchbox360 #92 3 years ago

  • Ryze #93 3 years ago

Daytona is apparently the highest earning arcade cabinet of all time. They must be ignoring the Arcades, which immediately makes the list a nonsense:

    Pac Man
    Track & Field
    Space Invaders
    Daytona
    Mortal Kombat
    Street Fighter II

No list that includes the arcades could miss these games without being way off the mark. The only arguable entry here is MK, as it was popular, but stood on SFII's shoulders.

Sega Rally should be swapped for Daytona. Sorry!

    It boggles the mind 0_0
  • EmiliasHorse #95 3 years ago

    What a pointless list, sorry.

Without the PC and home computers it carries zero credibility. I don't care if you say it is solely for Video games. That is like saying the PC is not a games platform therefore not worthy of inclusion even though it would dominate this waste of a list.

FFXII in front of VII ??

    No.

You REALLY are a sad twat if you think i'm "biased" against anything which isnt wii based... I just said i cant see how that game got to be in such a list (one which has been out a year tops, is hugely overrated, is pretty much a carbon copy of other games of its ilk (except with a good - for a video game - story), and hasnt exactly had time to influence anything?

Where the hell did i mention the wii? or mention other platforms? Just for complete f-wits such as yourself.. I'll re-iterate again.. I own a 360... I play on that a hell of a lot more than the wii.. and am currently spending all my gaming time on BurnoutParadise - which i'm loving. That's not to say i wont respond to complete fanboys slagging off the wii (which has become the "in thing" to do on this forum of late) - but that doesnt mean i'm the sort of arse that will slag off another machine (which is pointless).

I'm here for the GAMES.. Dont give a shit what platform they're on.. retards like you will never understand that though.

(and before you go looking for posts which "prove" i'm a wii fanboy.. yes i like mario, yes i'm a fan of nintendo games.. no i didnt like halo 3 or bioshock - no that doesnt mean i "hate" the xbox.. I also am enjoying Noby noby boy at the moment and was happy we reached the moon the other night)

sheesh.. what a twat you are.

Final Fantasy XII - I'll give you FF7.. But 12? Not on yer nelly
Super Mario 64 - Mario world or mario 3 should be in its place
Call of Duty 4 - Only if we count multiplayer.. single player was "meh"
GTA San Andreas - Vice city should be at this position, SA shouldnt be on list at all)
The Orange Box - it's a compliation not a game
    Wii Sports - w..t..f
    BioShock - (see above)
    WarioWare Inc - no
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Overated graphics fest
Crash Bandicoot - And not mario world?!? Are you f-ing kidding me?

What a pile of crap this list is. Tell me... did the people who compiled it not realise that the computer games industry dates back to the 70's? This is purely a list made by some backoffice geek to tick a box insisted on by a publishing house.

    Worst list ever.

Many of these games are not influential.

Reads more like a favourite games list than influential list. And in a most influential list you simply cannot ignore the PC and other computers. Games like Doom, Elite, Half-life, Dune...

Most of these games are less than three or four years old and apart from a few titles cannot be considered influential for this reason alone.

    Terrible terrible list.
  • nasanu #115 3 years ago

Very odd list there. Most of the choices are surprising to me, especially no1. I fail to see how mario kart was seminal. A game like gran turismo changed the racing game genre, there was nothing like it before. Mario kart was just a well made fun arcade racer, nothing really special about it though. Racing games were the same before it, the same after it.

And how did PGR4 get on that list? It had nice graphics, thats it. The older games were better in every other regard.
  • Weezer #116 3 years ago

Taking their simple 'Games were ranked on their initial impact, lasting legacy, how fun they were to play' equation, Super Mario Bros. HAS to be number one. It sold over 40 MILLION copies (yes, bundled with NES but then Wii Sports is included); it's impact was PHENOMENAL - it kickstarted the current era of videogames, FFS! It brokered all sorts of new ideas in terms of gameplay, end-of-level-bosses, collectibles, secret pathways, etc, and was a lot of 'fun' - though how they're measuring that particular facet escapes me.

If this was Eurogamer's list of 'games we just thought of which we like' I'd be disappointed; the fact hat's it's being backed up by Guinness World Records (though what this shitty list has to do with world records I've no idea), makes it utterly farcical.

Ok I've never posted on here before to my memory, but this list has annoyed me enough to make comment. I know they are meaningless and dont effect what I think is a good game I think what winds me up is I see so many people with these IMMENSE jobs, and I just feel like they dont actually like games that much? I watch some of that OXM stuff on live sometimes and half of them just seem like Halo fanboys that came straight out of uni, it upsets me, but only because im a snob.

Anyway, here are a few games I have picked out. Not to say I hate them all, but just thought they deserved comment...

Super Mario Kart - Ok these games are good but Im getting a bit bored of the newer updates just recycling tracks from old games? Also cant completely fall in love with a racing game that has fallen into this annoying habit where it is smarter to be 2nd for 90% of the race.

Tetris - Yeah ok we get it, if you put this fairly high in a 'Best Ever' list it shows how cultured you are as its such a gamers game. I dont care how much it helped the handheld industry, or how iconic the music is, its a game where you try and fit shaped blocks together, not exactly making my dick hard.

Halo - I wouldnt mind if people just went on about the online with this, but its the fact that people seem to buy into the completely non existent story that really winds me up about this game. The first one was so fucking dull, people were too busy wanking themselves into oblivion over how real the grass looked to realise the final third of the game was literally the same thing over and over for 2 hours. One of the laziest games I have ever played from a level design perpective.

Resident Evil IV - Have they just picked this because it is the most recent one? It is brilliant, but it peaks in the first 20 minutes and never really gets back to that level of awesome. Plus the dated control system gets shown up more and more with every installment. I reckon I enjoyed this precisely 2.7 times more when I played this on the Wii just because the aiming wasn't more awkward than flicking on the bedroom light to realise you'd just fucked your sister

Final Fantasy XII - Actually quite impressed how a game can have such a complete cast of clichéd dull characters led by the least charismatic main character I can imagine, a boring clichéd story nobody could care less about, all tied together with an arbitrary skill system, and 50 hours of "go here find this then come back" missions.

Street Fighter II - OMG IT WOZ DA FIRST ONE DAT STARTED IT ALL, except there has been about 827 versions of Street Fighter II, which at least 60% of them being better than the original

Grand Theft Auto - Why pick 3 of a 4 game series? why not just pick the series as a whole? they are all the same fucking game anyway. Funny how they left the most recent one out, despite it finally bothering to have a decent, paced narrative and a half decent fucking combat system. Shame that Saints Row does GTA so much better now, mainly because it isnt wanking itself off looking into a mirror

GoldenEye - Was this really as good as everybody said? REALLY? Im not asking was it good, it was brilliant, but was it as good as everybody says it is

Gran Turismo - You could put on a rolling demo of this game and hold the pad in your hands and still have just as much excitement as actually playing the game. One of the worst. On a sidenote it really fucked me off they were pretentious enough to release a fucking Prologue to GT5. A prologue. FOR A FUCKING RACING GAME. I could almost tolerate it if they released a FFXIII Prologue, or a Metal Gear 4: Epilogue. I could almost stomach that, releasing a small narrtive based expansion for a game famed for how story driven it was. Not for a fucking racing game that has the temerity to disckstroke itself into a frenzy about the realism and then not even have damage moddelling. Just fuck off

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 - Well what they have done here is just picked a completely fucking random installment of this game to try and make it sound like they've made this really informed choice. Please

Lego Star Wars Complete Saga - Refreshingly well done spin on 2 different franchises yes, best game ever? no

Wii Sports -What the fuck? seriously what the fuck. Bowling just about the only palatable game on there and I got bored of that before the disk was even all the way inserted into the console

Guitar Hero - Yeah ok it started it all but lets face it, there have been better versions now?

Project Gotham Racing 4 - Probably the worst of all the PGRs (actually 3 was gash wasnt it?) and not a touch on MSR.

Super Mario Galaxy - Everybody would have you think this reinvented platforming. It didnt, it just showed it from a different camera angle. Solid 8/10 game. Next

Crash Bandicoot - This game was complete gash, even at the time. I've played Game and Watch titles with more to it than this shit
  • dan_mackers #126 3 years ago

    ALSO, haha

To me there is something cheap about putting 3 games or so from one series in a top 50 list, especially when I don't feel like they all stood out so much individually that you would just HAVE to include them to have a respectable list. I mean if I was trying to make a top 50 albums list or something, id really try not to have the same band in there twice, I think id rather just chose the album I think most summed that band up. Maybe that's not the right way to do it but that's just me.

I mean they've only picked 50 games out of all the games EVER, but have picked 5 Mario games (6 if you include WarioWare), 3 GTA, 3 Zelda, 2 Final Fantasy and 2 Resident Evil, so 15/16 of all the games on that list come from 5 different franchises, just smacks of laziness really
  • Weezer #127 3 years ago

If Eurogamer's task was to alienate its audience and make us all believe they know nothing about videogames... looks like job fucking done.
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #128 3 years ago

Think it's a bit crazy to not include all formats! It makes the book's title misleading. For my money the top 10 should look a bit like this. But WTFAI :)

    1. Pong
    2. Space Invaders
    3. Tetris
    4. Pacman
    5. Doom
    6. GTA III
    7. Super Mario 64
    8. Outrun
    9. World of Warcraft
    10. The Sims

Worth noting that this is a "most influential" list, rather than a "best games" list - so some of the arguments here are attacking it for the wrong reason.

That said, there's no denying that it's an awful, awful list. Sure there's opinions on things, but for a game to be "influential" it has to actual influence gaming and many of those game simply have not (by virtue of either being too new (and thus their effect is not yet known) or because they are at the end of the natural curve, not the beginning).

Edit: RES posting above me is much, *much* closer to an "influential" list (even if I don't 100% agree with it ;)).
    Edited by 1 at 01/03/09 @ 14:41
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #130 3 years ago

    Awww, shucks. Cheers jglover4 :)

Agree with your point about games being 'influential'. The games should either define an origin, evolution or golden age of game type.

If I could be ersed to list 50, then Asteriods would be in there representing the radial shoot-em-ups. Also Elite would get a mention.

But I guess a balance has to be struck somewhere because the true origins/influence of some game types would lie in the obscurist of titles. Rendering such a list accurate, but possibly meaningless to the casual reader or non-game anorak.

This is possibly why the Guiness list is how it is.
    Edited by 1 at 01/03/09 @ 15:32

    That is one depressing list.
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #132 3 years ago

Actually, that's bollocks in the last paragraph of what I've written above^^

An accurate list should be paramount, as a non-game anorak wouldn't buy a a book called Guiness World Records: Gamer's Edition ^_^

The list is what it is: Not particularly enlightening, due to intentional omissions.

MattDamon, I like all kinds of games, even some of the ones I moaned about. Not sure comparing what I like to the list I made would make the points about them any more or less valid, but then I also dont think Mario Galaxy is "one of the best designed games ever" when it really is a above average platformer with a new camera perspective that sometimes results in clumsy controls. For what its worth I must point out to you that A) I put in the 8/10 in there for artistic license to bluntly say "Everybody thinks this game is perfect but it isnt" as really I find point scores in games, especially a 1-10 scale completely arbitrary. Also B) even if I was genuinely using a 10 scale, 8 would still make it a remarkably good game, people seem to think the positive side of a 10 scale starts at 7 half the time.

I mean for example Mafia is one of my favourite games ever because the mission design was brilliant and the story was well told and immersive, but I could still sit there and slate it for blocky animation, sometimes frustrating AI, especially friendly AI, lack of headshot detection and a few other things? I just wanted to put an alternative out there to people dickriding the same old games. I refuse to believe someone could call themselves a genuine fan of gaming and then still be able to wholeheartedly disagree that say GT5 really suffers from lack of damage modelling or that Halo has a weak story. Agreeing to these things and enjoying the game anyway aren't mutually exclusive

  • gudnikristinn #135 3 years ago

Pretty good list. I do agree with for instant Shenmue fans that it is a game worthy of the list(from a gamers point of view), but ask a regular casual gamer who only buys 2-5 games a year and hears mostly about games through TV and friends what Shenmue is and 90% will have no idea.
  • gudnikristinn #136 3 years ago

    @danmackers (Mario Galaxy a 8/10)

I had to post again i thought that was so funny. Do you not realize that it has a rating of 97 on metacritic.com, putting it in position 6-13 of highest rated games ever with the other 97īs.

And that it has sold almost 8 million copies, which puts it in #46 of the best selling games of all time.
  • Toonster #137 3 years ago

Decent list, except no Metroid Prime (the first one obviously)
  • dan_mackers #138 3 years ago

what on earth does sales have to do with anything? the Need for Speed series is one of the best ever by that logic. Dont really get what places like Gamespot and IGN thought about the game are supposed to do to make me change my mind? You're still allowed to think its brilliant if you want (hint if you have not understood this yet, I ALSO THINK IT IS A GREAT GAME) I was just pointing out some alternate takes. Posted my opinions because I thought it might spark some interesting debate amongst like minded people, not being told I was wrong because of metacritic, haha
  • dan_mackers #139 3 years ago

I also refer you back to my second post about using the score to make a point and then explaining in quite some detail how I find scores for games, especially 1-10 scores quite arbitrary. What if I had said "Solid 9/10 game" would you not have mentioned it? what is the massive gulf between an 8 and a 9?

ugh a retarded choices in there. FF 12 should not be up that high, good game but nowhere near the legendary status of a couple of it's predecessors.

And what the hell is grand theft auto doing at the top? Do they mean the original? I didn't think it was THAT great. San Andreas is listed down there so it's not supposed to be collective...

Good that Symphony of the Night made it though.

    "The guy's just a 1st class cock."

Is that in reference to me?

I like to think my girlfriend would agree ;)

there are so many issues with this list its unreal, but theyve been covered by you lot accept one.

    Target Renegade. where is it?

2 sets of hands on a cramped speccy keyboard playing co-op in this classic side-scrolling brawler is one of the fondest memories of my long 29 years.

What's the point of having a list of most infuential games if it excludes everything that isn't console? Surely this is just reporting on a very partial picture and becomes quickly redundant when many of the included titles were hugely influenced by games from other formats.

Rough Guide released a gaming bible last year which covered all formats and was pretty spot on in my opinion. This kind of list just feels insulting to other formats such as PC/Amiga/Spectrum and derides a part of gaming that is/was crucial to the development and current state of today's gaming industry.

What a waste. How can you even create a list of this nature and omit PC gaming?
