PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Games Industry.biz

17 September, 2008

Internet giant Google has said that reports it is to acquire Valve are just "rumour and speculation".

A report by The Inquirer has suggested Google will announce an acquisition of the Half-Life developer imminently.

Central to the deal would be the Steam business, the market leading online distribution service for games on PC.

Yesterday, Google used its session at Austin GDC to reveal plans for games developers to incorporate games into the firms online virtual world Lively.

I think there is just way to much speculation going on nowadays. look where it got us. nationalised banks, recession, unemployment up and to top it all off, google buying valve.

next up: LHC to destroy earth with manmade black hole "speculation"

Can't believe this is making it's way around the internet... Is this the same Inquirer that said the 360 was definitely going to win the console war last week?

Why would Valve want to be bought out? Aren't they hugely profitable and fiercely independent?

The Inquirer, lol. Such a reliable and dependable source of information!

They're like the Daily Star of tech news websites. Why are their news stories making headlines?

It may well turn to be true. But until it happens or other sites start to report (and not using Inquirer as their source) i refuse to believe it based on the past track record.

Although this is complete bollocks (yes, even in this corner of the world ppl laugh of the inquirer), Google is growing too big, in two years they will be no underdog and hate will start.

Google hasn't been anywhere near being an "underdog" since 2001 at the very latest, even if you stretch the term underdog as far as possible.

Assuming it was true, I wouldn't really mind that much if only it wasn't inevitable that Google would merge Steam IDs with their own system so they could track every single thing you did on your computer in order to more efficiently launch adverts at your face.

Still, at least The Inquirer isn't busily disappearing up its own arse in a cloud of self-importance like The Register these days.

Too true, the Reg is getting pretty snore worthy.
I love the Inquirer, OK is can be off at times and is of course sensationalist.
But i think the whole IT mixed with red top style works brilliantly.
Mike Magee has certainly left a huge impact on IT journalism and I for one love him for it.

@lefizz: I agree. It may publish bollocks now and then (solar panelzzz), but it's as entertaining as IT news gets. I do like reading CharlieD's stuff - he can go off on a pointless rant sometimes, but other times he's just plain well-informed. This business with the Nvidia duff chips for example - he saw smoke and called them out on it, defying the green fanbois and treading where most IT journalism fears to tread (lawsuit territory). At the same time, we've learned a lot more about how the process of making works; so even he was wrong, he's been informative.

I suspect there's more to this Valve story. After all, since when did large companies confirm leaks ahead of important announcements? How many times have Microsoft denied price custs on 360s in the different regions this year? It may be some weeks or months before something actually happens though.

Lol.. The scale of the story was partly the point.. but also, different from The Inquirers story was Valve denying the rumor... (although it did note that Valve had already stated they were open to being bought out)
