FIFA chief unconvinced by motion control

Experiments yet to satisfy, says Rutter.

FIFA boss man David Rutter has said there are no plans to incorporate Kinect or Move support into his game any time soon, as his team has yet to find a compelling reason to offer it.

Speaking to Eurogamer TV at E3 in an interview you can watch below, Rutter said: "We're not supporting it within [FIFA 11]. I'm a big fan of pushing gameplay and there are some cool things you can do with it. We've tried some of them out, but until the team's happy with what we can do with it won't be in there."

Asked whether he saw any general potential for the technology in FIFA, he said: "I'm not sure; I don't really fancy standing up and kicking a ball at a telly. There are some cool things - a goalkeeper could work very well - but obviously we're not talking about anything like that."

Meanwhile, 'Dangerous Dave' explained his team's position on the other hot topic of this year's LA showcase: 3D. "We've been looking into that too," he revealed. "It's tough; we have been working on it, it won't be in FIFA 11. To do it badly is probably pretty straightforward, but we want to do it well." He added: "We have seen it working; it looks great. But within FIFA there's too much going on, too much movement, too many camera angle changes for us to be easily supporting it at the moment. But yeah, we are looking at it."

You can catch the full interview with Rutter, where he talks up FIFA 11's key features while bitterly mourning the loss of his phone, below.

FIFA 11 is out on multiple formats this autumn.

Too many camera angle changes? In FIFA?

motion control footy doesnt do it for me. tried it on the Wii but playing off the ball is no fun. if you want it with motion control you may as well play the real thing

Fine by me, not interested in Kinect or 3D in FIFA. Happy for them to concentrate on not making the keepers planks and the AI defence France.

well Fifa 08 incorporated Wii Remote, surely it could incorporate Move in exactly the same way.

EA Sports should have their hands full with improving existing FIFA gameplay and removing all kinds of bugs, so this is a good thing.

I expect the first time we'll see of either is in novelty penalty shootouts for Euro 12.

Not to bothered by the lack of 3D or motion control. FIFA on Wii never grabbed me and I don't see myself getting a 3DTV for a good while, alongside the fact that the 3D games i have seen on Sky aren't that impressive from the normal camera angle.
Well played Rutter, EA got the priorities right here.

I anticipate hilarity as people kick their TV screens in.

Damn it, i wanted Ref mode in fifa with realistc hard tracking for cards.

    @cianchristopher

Ever played with the pro camera - it sweeps around all over the place in relation to the ball.

I see potential for PS move here, the wii pro evo controls are really done well
  • SpaceMonkey77 #13 2 years ago

I'd have to agree. Motion control limits the genres of games that can be played, so while its currently flavour of the month, and will have its own types of games we might briefly enjoy, its not really going to have the deep immersive stuff that the evolution of controllers offer, IMO.

Sure its more active, but try playing a SSFIV tournament with it for 8 hours. Be glad its not going to be in Fifa.

I think action adventure games could work well with it. Games that involve solving puzzles as well as shooting (more so for the move) but i'd also think stealth games could work, like the camera picking up your head posistion as you look around a wall.

I'm yet to play a football game that rearly works with motion control but i've not played many.

Yes, but will there be a vuvuzela mode?
  • jonsaan #16 2 years ago

    Good on 'im I say!

This is one area where Konami are streets ahead of EA in their football games...
  • Shikasama #18 2 years ago

A Kinect mode for taking penalties would be brilliant.

It doesn't matter though, Eurogamer bums EA Canada so whatever they do release in the future will be heralded as a amazing and brilliant, despite being full of bugs and exploits that become apparant if you play the game for a bit.

Sorry, but the sycophantic approach EG takes to Rutters team annoys the hell out of me.

Surprising that Wii PES has never gained a bigger fanbase, in my opinion it's miles ahead of traditional football games, the amount of control is way beyond anything else out there.
  • Shakey_Jake33 #21 2 years ago

When I initially read the headline, I assumed it was the FIFA chief himself, not some bloke at EA =/
  • humble #22 2 years ago

Of course not. That would mean they'd have to program an actual new game instead of rereleasing Fifa '97 yet again.
  • tnt_2008smum #23 2 years ago

Motion controls are just awful for the most part.

Don’t get me wrong they are ok for games like Wii sports and its ilk but when they are shoehorned into games for the sake of it (like the majority of Wii games or sixaxis use) they just plain suck ass!
  • Lee_Morris #24 2 years ago

    @Shankey

Rutter is in charge of Fifas on PS360. You can clearly tell by his answers that he has the final say on most of the things that go into the game.

BTW Mexico looked brill the other night. Who wants to take a bet with me that'll they'll make the semis?
  • AphoticCosmos #25 2 years ago

I can't see how it would work except for penalty shoot outs - running around in your living room won't work surely. If you want to run around with a ball, then there's a cheaper, more exciting, more accessible, more open air option available to you - it's called football.

And for the record, I'm actually looking forward to Kinect.

Not surprised that the chief of football isn't seeing the benefits of motion controllers you use with your hands. Maybe we can have a mexican wave minigame where 100 of us have to all use PS Move/Kinect and perform a mexican wave to manipulate the crowd!

Most England fans will fit that comment well, kicking the tv tho
