Eurogamer.net Podcast launches!

Weekly gaming discussion with staff and readers.

Eurogamer.net is happier than a rashberry in muck to announce that we have finally relaunched our podcast, and that from now on it will be published weekly at 3pm GMT on Tuesdays. Woo!

The first Eurogamer.net Podcast (we haven't got a funny name for it) is available from iTunes and as an MP3, or you can just stream it below.

The Eurogamer.net Podcast is hosted by Tom Champion, Eurogamer.net's Expo Community & Gaming Manager, and this week's guests are editor Tom Bramwell, deputy editor Ellie Gibson and MMO editor Oli Welsh.

The "gang" discuss games they have been playing recently, news that has happened recently, features that are going on the site this week and the best and worst of the Eurogamer.net comments.

There are also numerous inappropriate jokes, one swearword, and two special prizes for people who can be bothered to listen and react quickly.

The Eurogamer.net Podcast isn't just about us talking rubbish, however, although that is clearly a central theme: we also want you to get involved, and this week's first instalment talks about ways you can do that.

Finally, apologies for the rubbish sound quality in this, our first stab at a new podcast. It's sort of a beta version, and sounds as though we recorded it in the Demon's Souls Nexus. We've refined our techniques and next week should be a considerable improvement.

Have a listen and let us know what you think, as we'll be using your feedback to help shape its future direction. Enjoy!

any chance someone can type this up so I can read it through quickly? Find podcasts take too long to listen to, and no I'd rather be listening to music when traveling
  • chrisjm #2 2 years ago

will comment trolls and fanboys get to have a voice?
  • ignatiusjreilly #3 2 years ago

Congrats! Will listen on the way home. Hope you can provide an RSS feed in future - I'll definitely miss it often if I can't subscribe.

As for "The first Eurogamer Podcast", I'm pretty sure I remember an EG podcast a few years ago. Hopefully it's improved a bit since then... ;)
  • BanjoMan #4 2 years ago

I got as far as the introductions. It's pretty stilted, lo-fi and long and drawn-out. But I'm sure it'll get loads better, so good work on getting it started.

We've submitted the podcast to iTunes so it should be up soon. In the meantime, here's the rss:

Please keep it sensible and just be yourselves. Don't repeat the mistake of other podcasts by deliberately trying to be funny or wacky.

Have a listen to the Gamespot UK podcast and use that as a base.

Trying again. It's getting more interesting now. To be fair, my attention span is shit.

I was hoping you guys would put out a podcast eventually, want to give this a listen soon.
One thing I find when listening to podcasts is that inane chatter is actually highly entertaining. Not the whole thing, but I don't like when people try to stay on topic with a religious fixation.

"One thing I find when listening to podcasts is that inane chatter is actually highly entertaining. Not the whole thing, but I don't like when people try to stay on topic with a religious fixation."

I agree, free flowing banter ceartainly lets you get an idea about what reviewers think in a more casual way than well thought out review. The dragon age bit at the start being a prime example.

When I get round to playing dragon age I'll now know where to go to get some experimental poorly animated homoeroctic elf sex. Giving a whole new meaning to the term "uncanny valley"

P.S. Enjoyed the banter but maybe a bit more structure might smooth things along a bit.

In West Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys, they were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said "you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air"

    :-P
  • Venatio Verified Expo Community & Gaming Manager, Eurogamer Network #28 2 years ago

    @Unclebenny

Thanks for your feedback, I agree. I think the podcast will settle down once we're fully comfortable with it and have a set of regular features.
  • Moribundman #29 2 years ago

Not as good as The Collings and Herrin podcast. :-P Provided its RSSable I can download to my Android phone. Hurrah.

Which brings me to another thought - are you guys going to port the Eurogamer app to Android? Some people out here don't like iPhones. :-P

  • Byblos1 #31 2 years ago

"GiantBombcast is ok if you're into shouty American blokes shouting about how AWESOME they are. I'm not."

So you haven't listened to it then.

GiantBomb's podcast is informative and really quite funny at times, even if the humour doesn't always translate. I can't think of many journalists who are as well informed as Jeff Gerstmann.

Still, there's room for more than one gaming podcast so I look forward to listening to this one later.

I dare you to use Razz's song for the theme tune. I double dare ya! :-D

So... podcast. A bit too quiet, a bit too rambly, some minor spoilers for stuff I haven't played, English people still somehow sound weird doing podcasts. On the plus side, quite funny at times, short enough to listen to without growing old and dying, contains 'free stuff' that I can't be bothered to type in because someone on HotUKDeals will have already claimed it before the podcast was even up, and offers me the chance to get a mention every time I suggest something 'perhaps could've been a little better'' in a classic Nintendo franchise.

Obviously you should pull some stuff from the forums rather than from out here, though. Here be mentalists, whereas over in yonder forums there are a few people who can actually string a sentence together!

  • FogHeart #40 2 years ago

What's the optimum length of a podcast? I reckon forty minutes. In other words, slightly shorter than an average commute or a lunch break.
How many people should be involved? I think two people, a stone and a balloon. The stone keeps things on track and the balloon stops it all feeling too controlled. Plus a guest who lasts 10 minutes or so.

Must include reading out of emails, plus asking for emails with specific subject lines on stuff you are talking about so you can pick them out, like "I am also a World of Warcraft widower".
  • Dr_Salvador84 #41 2 years ago

  • X201 #42 2 years ago

Otherwise, great and do keep it unscripted, that makes it funny.
  • Mr.DNA #54 2 years ago

I really enjoyed listening to this. Listening to softly-spoken English folk gently taking the mick out of each other makes a pleasant change from my previous favourite Podcast, the Giant "Bombcast". I used to enjoy the Bombcast, but I'm a sensitive soul, and absolutely cannot stomach listening to those geezers any more after the ultra-shoddy manner in which they covered Demon's Souls. I mean, they didn't like Demon's Souls, and totally ignored it altogether after a particularly shambolic "Quick Look" in which they said that it was a "clunky-looking" game that is only going to appeal to "crazy people who hate themselves".

Yep. Still totally, disproportionately peeved off about that whole debacle. This is my new Podcast of choice!
  • edhe #55 2 years ago

My favourite podcast is the one from 1up because they go over the news, the facts, the insights that they have and don't try to be funny or 'cool' - they're just cool by default for being such great people with vested interests in the industry, hope you guys have done the same and i'll try to listen soon.

  • martlev #60 2 years ago

Finished listening to it all now. Aswell as with my last comment, structure would be a good idea although im not liking the idea of getting people on to argue the review scores which as pointed out in a round about way could cause all sorts of problems. Although foul language etc would be editable so iot doesnt appear in the final version.

I agree, it was like one of my office meetings. I listen to podcasts to get away from work, not bring it home.
  • bobiroka #71 2 years ago

It's too quiet! Are you all miked up or just using an ambient mic in the middle of the room? It certainly sounded like the latter. Could hardly hear anything over the din of buses driving past me on the way to work.

Listening to this just before the masterfully produced new Irrational Games Podcast by Shaun Elliott is possibly a little unfair, but most podcast at least have each person speaking wearing a headset or something.

Like the best/worst comments feature, but the rest of it was difficult to follow at that volume...
  • mfnick #72 2 years ago

  • JensonJet #73 2 years ago

Sorry Eurogamer, the Podcast isn't for me.

Great website, but as a mini radio show, no thank you. It needs more direction and focus and the inclusion of interviews by industry insiders. I'm more into having conversations than listening to others have them.

The idea of getting a Eurogamer reader to join the podcast to discuss a game or review seems slightly ironic to me. If you actually care to discuss games with your readers use these forums!! As far as I'm aware nobody at Eurogamer bothers to join in, but now you want to discuss gaming with us!?!?!
  • Venatio Verified Expo Community & Gaming Manager, Eurogamer Network #74 2 years ago

    @bobiroka

Yep, we're totally aware of the sound issues. As I've mentioned we're working on it and it should be better for next week.
  • ChrisOTR #75 2 years ago

Hi... I enjoyed listening. Just one thing I don't think anyone else mentioned, it's only a small thing but it makes a big difference to how professional it feels - fill out the mp3 tag fields and *add a picture to the tag*... It looks so much more snazzy when you play it! :)
  • Hendo #76 2 years ago

Please drop the "lowest rated comment" thing, it's only adding to my cynical (and yet probably, completely on the money) view that you guys are actively encouraging people to troll. I know you survive on hits, but you don't have to resort to getting people worked up.

Other than that a good start, but as others have said, needs better sound quality and all that.
  • tafkap #77 2 years ago

Good to hear a well informed UK based podcast. I listen to numerous gaming podcasts during my daily commutes, and most enjoy those with a sense of humour that know where to draw the line.
Enduring raucous laughter for thirty seconds isn't fun, it's like looking in at a party you're not invited to (Bombcast has been guilty I must say).
As has been said, stuff like rebelfm or thatvideogamepodcast get the balance right - they're gamers having a chat about what they're playing and enjoying some witty banter, without getting weighed down discussing esoteric concepts of gaming culture and dull chat from a developer about the choice of font in a menu screen. The gametheory podcast was the only one of that nature I vaguely enjoyed, but it's sadly ended.

Plus, nothing worse than having the volume up high on the train and then there's someone too low in the mix so you can't hear them, and others loud enough to cause tinnitus. Also, laughter into the mic can be loud! Not that you're guilty at all, but just something for future note...equal volume equals aural pleasure. :-)

Gaming chat from a UK perspective other than 'one life left' is much needed (though that's a great show), and you're already streaks ahead of the MSN Gamecast IMO. I hope to see my favourite gaming site also becoming my favourite podcast. Good luck for the future..
  • frunk #78 2 years ago

Just listened - I enjoyed it. Its just nice just to hear the voices of the peeps who write.

To echo some of the comments of others:
    - "Lose the max/min karma comments"; that is just fanboy bait in the already "too fanboy" comments sections: An alternative may be the best commenets in your eyes from the weeks busiest comments sections - which are obviously the news items of most interest to your readers
    - A little more structure would be beneficial but I think that will develop with time - don't tie yourself down - just add sections as you want, and be flexible.

    Other thoughts:
    - Some knowledge and comment on your own news would be good :) This is primarily a news web site and your strength is often the amusing editorial provided alongside that... so it should be reflected in your podcast.
    - Reviews - nah - you have them on the web site, but interesting annecdotes (like the "not too fussy" elf) make for amusing listening

I actually like the length - between 30 mins and an hour is ideal...any longer and its difficult to listen to regulalry, and shorter and its just too light and you can never discuss anything in depth.

BTW Is the brilliant end theme on the podcast available on iTunes, yet? ;)
  • Venatio Verified Expo Community & Gaming Manager, Eurogamer Network #79 2 years ago

    @Hendo

It really, really wasn't done with that in mind. I thought it would be fun. Looking at the feedback we are going to drop it and replace it with writer picked favourite comments.
  • sheldipez #80 2 years ago

giantbombcast is perfect podcast - well informed, intelligent and always funny banter (even if you dont always agree with what they say) but can see how at 2hrs+ they're a bit long for some - but ideal for me over a weeks journey to and from work

i also listen to the australiangamer podcasts which are funny but not exactly the most informed of hosts. they stumble forget developers, game titles, release dates etc. etc. always a laugh though..

looking forward to listening to this...
  • SpaceMonkey77 #81 2 years ago

Nice podcast guys, but it needs some work.

    Try the following:
Make the podcast longer, about 1hr 30m - 2hrs should be good
    Better structured segments
Have a guest on the show.
    Ocassional retro review
    Better intro music
  • Venatio Verified Expo Community & Gaming Manager, Eurogamer Network #82 2 years ago

    @spacemokey

    Thanks for your feedback. :)

Make the podcast longer, about 1hr 30m - 2hrs should be good - Sorry, but I don't agree. I think over an hour is too long. We're going to keep it flexible but generally it'll be somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour.

Better structured segments - Yep, definitely working on this.

Have a guest on the show - This will be something we do once we've settled into the groove.

Ocassional retro review - Not sure about reviews as such but a general chat about an old game we've all played is a nice idea.

Better intro music - Again, working on this. Hopefully the listeners will produce some magic. :)
  • SpaceMonkey77 #83 2 years ago

I agree Shield, Giantbomb is very good. Fun yet informative and reminds me of how Gamesmaster used to be (good sense of humour), but is not for everyone. There's a lot of competition of there now, and a lot of very good indie podcasts who also hold their own well. Here's list of others to check out.

    Digital Cowboys (U.K based
    Cranky Gamers (U.K based
    Mobcast
    Gamers with Jobs
    Videogame Outsiders
    GameHounds
    4 Guys 1 Up
    1 Up Oddcast
    CAGcast
    Kotaku podcast

The Greatest Movie Ever Podcast (awesome, funny reviews of awesome films)
Fast Karate for the Gentlemen (covers games and other funny stuff openly)

Yeah, i used to love Game Theory podcast, and weeped when it was no more.

I say, give it time, and Eurogamer will get there. Give me a podcast, that discusses those deeper issues of the industry, alongside interviews, news, and reviews. Perhaps you could have an occasional forum guest, when you record at a certain time, as well as an industry big wig. Improve the sound quality too.

Fantastic that you started up the podcasts again. I rarely have time to sit down and watch video but I have plenty of time when an audio show is just right. So, some random thoughts.

I find that discussions suits the audio format well, as tone and spontaneity transfers badly to text. Structure is not as important as chemistry between hosts and having interesting topics. Banter and jokes are also fine (desired I think), a relaxed attitude tends to keep the discussion more honest and personal. I think this first show shows promise.

Keep Ellie on the show. No, not because she's a woman.

Some technical aspects. Around 30 minutes is a good length for a show. Don't waste time with jingles between segments, sound effects and such, the americans have that covered. If you decide to go with more structure, having chapter markers in the audio file is appreciated. Keeping an even sound level is more important to me than audio quality in general and please stay with a mono mix.

  • Luckyjim #88 2 years ago

Nice podcast guys. I quite like the feature of "what you've been playing". As for other suggestions, I'm not quite sure. Whatever you do, please don't become one of those self-indulgent, self-congratulatory gaming podcast, ala IGN, Joystiq etc.

Look forward to the next podcast.

Get Mister Minkley on every episode, he is my hero.
    P.S. I'm not gay... yet.
  • local_celebrity #90 2 years ago

I was surprised by how ramshackle this was. Everything on Eurogamer is usually so polished, so meticulously done. I'm sure it'll improve in the fullness of time though. That said, it would be wise to check out what the competition are doing. Gamers with Jobs do a sterling podcast every week. It's usually an hour and a half long, and the banter and bonhomie of those guys is really rather endearing. They're not jaded either. Despite being old-school gamers, they still have a genuine passion for the subject. The enthusiasm is infectious. They also have great guests, like Ken Levine and Shaun Elliott, which helps.

P.S. This must not, I repeat, must not turn into The Johnny Minkley Show.
  • casper_no #91 2 years ago

I subscribed the second I read the podcast had returned. Eurogamer (and Edge) are in my opinion the best game sites, providing good, in-depth reviews and interesting articles.

What I'd really want to have in the podcast are discussions and opinions. This is obviously something the Eurogamer staff does well and which would fit the podcast format perfectly. Example of themes: the valley of uncanniness, the morality of the GTA IV ending, the discrepancy between the realistic graphics and unrealistic plot of Modern Warfare 2, the dilemma of realism in general - we want perceived realism, but not the tediousness of it, etc. These - of course - are just examples, EG can come up with infinitely better ones

Interviews would probably also work - provided you can get decent audio quality.

News and reviews isn't that important for me in a podcast - I read your web pages regularly, ie. a bit to often.

Keep up the good work, you manage to treat games as a proper cultural expression, not just entertainment mechanics.

2a) You run down to the audio shop with your half of the money and buy some clip-on microphones or headset microphones.
2b) Give the other half to Ellie and let her go on a mad girlie shopping spree for soft furnishings for the office.

    3) Bask in the reflected happiness of the listeners as they can actually here what you are saying clearly without the God awful echo from the office.

Apart from that podcast was OK. Needs more structure, but OK.
I still think the Gamespot UK podcast is the one to base yourselves on.

    Cheers X201. :)

We're making some changes for next weeks recording so we'll see how that sounds. If it's still not good enough then rest assured, I'll be knocking on Rauper's door. ;) Structure will be better on next weeks show too.

As for basing ourselves on other gaming podcasts, I'm not so sure. I haven't listened to the Gamespot show, I'm sure it's good but I'd kind of like to let our podcast evolve without getting influenced from the competition. Hope that makes sense.

Venatio, I wasn't saying copy the Gamespot, just meant to say follow its style. i.e. Don't got all shouty American on us.
I struggled for ages to find a podcast that wasn't full of shouty Americans or that didn't have people on it that thought that they were more important than the games or that didn't try and turn into some sort of "We're teh wild and Crazee guys" show.

That's why the Gamespot UK podcast was nectar to my ears. Its like a relaxed chat down the pub with your mates.

    @Venatio

    You're welcome.

Looking forward to the next podcast. What Eurogamer publishes shows that there is a knowledgeable staff which makes for interesting discussions. I'll try to come up with some good questions for the Q&A.

BTW - I contribute to a Norwegian game site ([link url=http://www.tokyo.no)]http://www.tokyo.no)[/link] - it's often Eurogamer articles I wish I had written. Damn you and your cleverness!

Can I suggest taking the waste paper bin off Ellie's head is probably a good idea in the long run?
  • Venatio Verified Expo Community & Gaming Manager, Eurogamer Network #98 2 years ago

    @jonbwfc

Absolutely not. She's a danger to herself and others so the bin stays.

Sounds about as unprofessional as it gets really... Good luck for next time though.

god damn it i keep trying to listen to it but the audio goes from too loud to too quiet for headphones on my journey. and i'd feel odd sitting at home listening to it on my stereo :)
I'm officially requesting that for future quality assurance you get mics for everyone instead of just one (although youd need a mixer then) or get some FM radio strength compression on it! Just need basic wave editing software.
    pretty pls?
