EA indicates September for WAR

Official date "extremely soon".

EA's Singaporean website seems to have inadvertently dated the company's MMO contender, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

The site lists the game for release in September 2008. Earlier this weekend, that listing said "23 September", but the exact date - a Tuesday - has now been pulled.

We contacted EA's European publishing partner GOA and were told "we will be announcing a release date extremely soon".

EA has previously promised a simultaneous release in the Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the US and Europe for the Mythic Entertainment game. So what goes for Singapore should go for Europe too.

September doesn't seem out of the question to us. Following several delays, the game is currently looking in very good shape.

A late September or early October release would also tally with the hints producer Jeff Hickman dropped when we spoke to him back in late March.

We asked Hickman why the game had been held back six months from it's original April-June launch window and he corrected us: "I know the actual dates and it's not [a delay of] six months. Let's call it three to six months."

"ZOMG Lich King beta, WOW expansion due before XMAS. Get it out NOW NOW NOW!"

Yes, another MMO that is just like every other MMO. This is what I have been waiting for.

I'll probably stop playing WoW for this. Those public quests sound a million times more fun than grinding.

@spam - since the last delay WAR's always been gunning to release around this time, it's got nothing to do with Wrath's release at all (unlike Funcom suits with their money), EA and Mythic have never been worried about WoW, not because they think they can beat it, it's because they don't intend to compete with it. I mean why go for a 10 million playerbase you know wont budge from the game at all when theres another 5.9 billion possibile subs from other areas..

WAR's playerbase doesn't HAVE to be current MMOers or current gamers at all, so theres no need to 'care' about another playerbase at all, Mythic's always said 'WAR will be the beat NUMBER TWO game in the industry', WAR's a fun game for many but it's 100% certain it's not for everyone and Mythic aren't expecting everyone to love it, it's like Marmite.

Indeed they are, this is a really great aspect of WAR, public quests add a whole other dimension to MMO's, and the lack of grinding so far has been a breath of fresh air. Whilst I really enjoyed WoW, I'm enjoying WAR a whole lot more.

    a Tuesday launch seems.... unlikely

anyway, i expect the WOTLK launch date to magically appear very soon....

Funny how Blizzard is always cast as the saint by the wow fanboys, even though they stole half their ideas from GW and Warhammer, and then they decide to have an autumn launch of WOTLK, the same time as WAR.

    Very strange

Any word on an open beta?
  • mikeck #11 4 years ago

Open beta codes were given to those who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition - however, these are now sold out and have been sent now. There are open beta keys being flogged on ebay for about £20-25 (one of my housemates bought one last week), and the open beta will probably open in the next month, although there has been no official date for this as yet.

You can also subscribe to the WAR newsletter and this puts you into a draw for the open beta, however this subscription now has about 750,000 sign-ups and they give away about five open beta codes per region every month, so the chances through the newsletter are very, very slim. I've been signed up to that for a year and a half, and so far nada (lucky I pre-ordered the collectors edition back in March then).

@anom - If WotLK gets announced to be out before christmas (then gets delayed in nov to 'sometime in 2009') a day before WAR hits the selfs, so be it, if the WoW players still wan to play WoW, let them, as like with most AoC players it'll be a 'somthing to do till X' situation..

I'd rather have them not play at all then Mythic add new servers and features to cope with a mass influx month 1 only to have the servers barren again in a few months once Wrath is out as most of the players really wanted to play that over WAR anyway, my advise is if if players don't really want to play that mmo more then 8 months don't buy it at all.

We've got enough non-WoW elite to bring into WAR's fold anyway :)

@Diz - The 'mass invite of signed up beta players not already in' may be soon we don't know, but don't expect sites to have keys, signing up to the beta (or deadcated site comps) is your only way in.

@mikeck: nice to hear that about the Public Quests and lack of grinding, really itching to use the beta code I got with my CE pre-order!
  • mikeck #14 4 years ago

    @Kazzahdrane

If it's anything like it is now, it'll be very good, but of course with further time to develop (if needed) I'm sure it'll be even better for the open beta, and more importantly, launch. I don't wish to tempt fate, but I honestly think this will be the best MMO launch to date, purely because they seem to have got so much right already - but of course, with these types of games there will always need to be further tweaks etc.

I've seen the future and it's public quests, hehe ;)

when they axed 4 out of 6 cities + those classes, I lost interest and am now going back to wow to play lich king for a few months when it releases. was hoping war to be my mmo fix, not anymore. I would probably get bore with lich king after few months though.

Hardly a big deal losing these things at all. You'll see why when you have a play, there's a great deal to do. I'd rather it all played well and felt balanced, than have four extra cities and classes that don't feel right.
