City of Heroes' Going Rogue dated

Morally flexible expansion out in August.

NCsoft has announced that Going Rogue, the next expansion pack for its superhero MMO City of Heroes, will be released on 17th August.

The headline feature of the expansion is the ability to switch sides between the Heroes and Villains of the game according to a moral alignment system. Villains will be able to see Paragon City, and Heroes the Rogue Isles, for the first time.

You'll also be able to start as a neutrally-aligned character in the new alternate universe of Praetoria and play through a new starting experience which will lead you down the path of heroism or villainy based on your choices. Praetoria will offer content for all players across multiple new zones.

There will also be new powersets and a new Incarnate system for endgame advancement.

I've just cancelled my sub for COH after 2 months of on and off play - partially due to a lack of time on my part, but it was fun, especially, as people are often told, the character creator. I really hope the alignment system is more complex than, say, doing a normal mission then deciding whether to save or kill an NPC at the end. It has to be like Mass Effect, not Fable. If COH was reworked with a modern engine and a more coherent set of linked missions, I reckon it could truly rival other big MMOs.

They did all of that: it's called Champions Online.

No... just no. Just as World of Warcraft != Everquest != Warhammer Online, Champions Online != City of Heroes/Villains.

EDIT: for clarity != is the programming code for "NOT EQUAL TO"

Having played both CoH and CO, I can tell you Champions Online is pretty much CoH 2.0. Or, if you prefer, CoH 0.5: the game Cryptic were developing before the NCSoft deal introduced the class/power-set changes.

Trust me on that one. I was there.

This is good news for the 4 players who still idles in the game. For me, I'm sticking with CO for the time being.
