Battlestations sequel planned News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

29 March, 2007

Eidos' parent company SCi has revealed that work on a new Battlestations: Midway game is underway.

"After the period end, in February 2007, we released Battlestations Midway on PC and Xbox 360. This product immediately entered the UK charts at No1 in both the Xbox 360 and All Formats charts," a bit of their latest statement reads. "We are continuing to build this franchise and have a sequel in development."

Unfortunately Eidos was unable to clarify any further details to Eurogamer this morning, but we expect it will be available on PC, Xbox 360 and possibly PS3 and maybe even Gizmondo sometime in 2008. Or 2009, 2010 or 2011.

The results also solidified previous news that a new Just Cause game was on its way, taking Eidos' full-priced financial 2007 offerings up to 11 over last year's nine [Exciting - Ed]. It also revealed 10 new casual games for the upcoming fiscal year, and 4 digitally-distributed outings - following its recent deal with Steam.

Battlestations: Midway was released earlier this year on Xbox 360 and PC. It gives you the chance to turn the tides of history at the ominous Pacific battle of Midway during World War II, controlling aircraft, battleships and submarines.

We found it unique and rewarding, if somewhat hard to get to grips with. You can read our full Battlestations: Midway review elsewhere on Eurogamer.

Or, you could follow our digital biscuit trail to read the full interim results for Sci.

Hmm... part-chopped this quite early (thanks Tesco!!) after trying to enjoy it but failing to click with it. Part of me wonders whether I was a little hasty - the other part carries on playing Crackdown.

Is there still a decent EG community playing this? It dropped off the forum very quickly.

SCI - Next time give the sailing and subbing as much attention as the flying, please.

It was a bit of a mixed-bag, really felt like a great opportunity missed.

The idea sounded exciting, but I spent most of my time looking at a top-down map for the latter part of the game. Not fun. Also the multiplayer tend to degenerate in drawn-out hide and seek, which can get tedious.

IMO, the best mix of strategy and first-person action I ever played was the version Battlezone developed in the mid-nineties by what became Pandemic studios. One of my favourite games of all time.

I agree with others here in that Battlestations did not fully work for me. It's a shame as I think they were close to making a great game but the concept needed a little more work.

They also needed to include some sort of single player skirmish mode. Ideally a dynamic campaign would be the way to go.

Still I will be interested to see what they do with a squel.

Battlestations Midway still is one of my favourite online experiences. Get a four-man team together and actually coordinate your attacks and it becomes 9/10.

However, their customer relations after release and the fiasco with their DLC - which didn't work - has left a sour taste in my mouth regarding Eidos.
