America's Army demo on XBL News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

2 November, 2007

HOO-AH! America's Army: True Soldiers reporting for duty! In demo form. On The Land Of The Free's Xbox Live Marketplace. 535MB.

As the description says: "Created by Soldiers, Developed by Gamers, Tested by Heroes". Vomited on by me. And yet it's not available here, sadly, so you will need to mount an unauthorised invasion of the US Marketplace to acquire it.

If you do, you will discover that you can team up with up to 15 other players to tackle enemies entrenched in a coastal village for a "dynamic co-op mission", or you can do an eight-on-eight "Squad Engagement" match.

You'll get to use all the real stuff the US Army uses in the field today, like the Blue Force Tracker and the Raven UAV but not the UN. Anyway, that's enough xenophobia for one morning.

Will this also include friendly-fire, especially when Brits are in the same area as your troop?

I'm waiting for the blackwater version, I hear it has the same 'torture the detainee' mini game, but you get promoted for it (faster).

Can you dispatch a chain-gun and RPG squad to resolve a minor domestic dispute in a town you occupy?

"Can you dispatch a chain-gun and RPG squad to resolve a minor domestic dispute in a town you occupy?"

No, but you can shoot the pet dog of an innocent civilian family whilst on routine investigations, just because it barked at you*.

I wonder if it includes a bit where you join the army because a judge gave you choice between service or prison time? I don't know about anyone else, but that particular recruitment path always fills me with confidence.

...and almost as surprising, the spoon-fed morons who see only in terms of black and white because their governments tell them to are once again making giant assumptions, sweeping generalisations and inaccuracies in their ever so cutting responses to these "hateful comments".

Liberal is not a pejorative term, and objecting to the destruction of a country and the repulsive behaviour of troops and politicians from the conquering states does not equal supporting dictators, JSPOOLE. I dare say lots of people here wouldn't risk their lives in Iraq - what good would it do anyone to do so?

EDIT: Oh yeah - anyone not interested in supporting the US cause really should boycott this game on ideological grounds.

@JSPOOLE

"What a surprise, the hateful comments by a bunch of liberals who support dictators, and wouldn't risk their cushy easy lives because others in the army do it for them has already started."

Thats the spirit. No shades of grey in this life, hell no.

The population of the entire earth is made up up of either valiant gold-hearted heroes who do what they must, and terror loving surrenderists who would rather just have a cup of tea. Everyone choose a side.

Questions.

Do you think that everyone on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan share you view?

Do you also think that the parents of those killed share your view?

What about the politicians who would never under any circumstances see their own children join the forces, do they share your view do you think?

I assume they must, as you clearly speak for all them and on their behalf.

Remember, Iraq wasn't invaded to stop its leader killing people in the region it was because he 'had' weapons of mass destruction.

Will this game only be available in the US? Will it be sold at a reduced price since it's free on PC?

JSPOOL, do you have any idea what you're talking about?

For starters, where do you think Saddam got those lovely chemical weapons from in the 1980's? Come to think of it, where do you think Saddam purchased most of his weapons from in the 1980's?

It couldn't be from the Americans could it?

The 'Allied Powers' invaded both Afghanistan and Iraq on false assumptions made about 'terrorism' and WMD's, not to remove dictators. This, of course, was not true, as the numerous invasions and terrorist atrocities committed by the United States over the previous 50 years, were based on assumptions that were clearly not true.

The United States is the biggest threat to world peace that has ever existed. Don't fill your bellies with the sugar coating and certainly don't buy this game.

And, JSPOOL, educate yourself using something other than television.

well, JSPOOLE, you seem to have totally misunderstood what's happening in this thread. I have nothing against soldiers generally. I expect most people criticising this game have nothing against soldiers generally. What I personally hate about this game is that it exists as a propaganda tool. I have issue with what the soldiers are forced to accept and what the soldiers have to do under the banner of "defence of their country" - because it's plainly obvious that there's nothing to do with defence involved in Iraq. And I have issue with soldiers who do not act in a manner befitting representatives of their countries, like the ones taking photos at Abu Ghraib, or the ones who treat locals like shit, and the officers in charge who let such things occur.

Most soldiers are good, ordinary people who do a hard job. I don't think anything anyone's said suggests otherwise. Most negativity here is about the war's aims, the strategies used and those exceptions who blacken the names of a nation's armies, not about the average troops on the ground.

Hussain was a bastard, and his rule corrupt and bloodthirsty. I know this. Everyone knows this. Nobody in their right minds argues otherwise. Nor has anyone here attempted to.

You badly need some bubbles burst. For starters, in WWII, most people in Britain didn't know about the holocaust until after the war, and many didn't care if Germany invaded Poland or Czechoslovakia. They were fighting to keep a foreign army out of Britain, not because of Hitler's treatment of minorities he didn't like or because of their outrage at his disregard of the sovereignty of states. The Iraq war has nothing whatsoever to do with defence and is not remotely comparable to WWII.

Also, attitudes like "these guys shot at us, so they're damn lucky we only took humiliating pictures and spread them round the internet" are exactly why troops get blown up by locals. Respect the local people and they're much more likely to respect you. Treat them like sub-human playthings and everyone will hate you.

Finally, the Suni vs. Shiite combatants are no more (or less) barbaric than Hindus vs. Muslims (vs. Christians) in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Palestinians vs. Israelis, or Catholics vs. Protestants in Northern Ireland. Get some perspective.
