Alan Wake ending to be kept secret

May not be included in preview copies.

Remedy Entertainment is keen to keep the ending of new adventure game Alan Wake secret - so keen, in fact, they may not even include it in preview copies.

As reported by G4 TV, bossman Matias Myllyrinne said, "I think we're going to be insanely careful about how much of the story we reveal. We'll clearly discuss with some of our friends at Microsoft whether we even give the ending of the game for anybody's preview.

"I'd like to hold it back, [I] don't want anybody to spoil it for the audience," he continued. "That's just my personal feeling."

The problem, Myllyrinne explained, is that the internet makes it easier for people to spread spoilers. "People can piece these things together. They start to gather the puzzle and then all of a sudden [the whole story is] online..."

Alan Wake is due for a release on Xbox 360 in spring 2010. Which seems like a long time to wait, considering it was apparently finished last August. A PC version will follow.

Preview copies that are not the full game is not uncommon already.. many times a `special preview` limited-level version of a game is given out to be previewed. Final review of course should always be based on FINAL retail code (not `almost final) :p)

Hang on, they want to cut the ending from the preview so that nobody can spoil it for the people who have to wait for release day. This would be admirable were it not for the fact that different territories are getting it different days and PC version isn't to be released for some time after that.

There's the also the fact that after seeing this game at E3 for the last six years, nobody really cares anymore.

  • makeamazing #13 2 years ago

Its probably because Alan is actually in a mental institution and its all in his mind.....ooooooooh
  • Skire #14 2 years ago

What's the big deal? The press copy of Uncharted 2 was the full game.. As far as I know no press ever spoiled the end for me..
  • funkateer #15 2 years ago

At the end, Alan realizes he's actually been dead the whole time.
  • dither #16 2 years ago

    Alan Wake = A. Wake

    Caution, spoilers.
  • TriggerHippie #17 2 years ago

Its actually Alan's evil twin brother, Brian!
  • metalangel #18 2 years ago

Alan is actually called Quentin. Q. Wake. Q. Wake = Quack. He's really a duck. An insane one.
  • chukcyQ #19 2 years ago

"Alan... Wake up!" He's just hallusinating all the action parts.
  • chukcyQ #20 2 years ago

Or wait a sec... The game has no ending? When it would be the time to show the ending movie you just get a blank, black screen.

With the backing of MSoft this could be the best game ever, far better than Heavy Rain, you can count on that.
  • Jonsend #22 2 years ago

It turns out it wasn't real, it was just a computer game!
  • Mercatoria #23 2 years ago

Has a review of a game ever revealed that end?

Seems an odd thing to do.
  • metalangel #24 2 years ago

Perhaps it (and I mean the game itself) is entirely the horrific 'dream sequence' from Max Payne, where you run along (and fall repeatedly off of) a two-pixel wide path of blood, while a baby wails and wails and wails in the background until, in disgust, you rip the disc out of your console, shove it back in its case, and never play it again?

Because that's exactly what happened to me when I played Max Payne. It could have continued being extremely excellent past that bit, it could have become the best game ever after that bit, it could have been given me a number to call for Gianna Michaels to come around and tittyfuck me until my cock was eroded to nothing. It didn't matter. After that section, I couldn't muster the will to continue.

The ending of Uncharted2 wasn't shocking or game changing, actually it was pretty predictable but that doesn't change the fact that the game is still a hot stuff.

Now if the ending of Silent HIll 2 was revealed and hinted heavily in Internet etc B4 I played the game, I would have been annoyed and changes my view of game.

Obviously Alan Wake is gonna be big on mystery and ending must be as pretty important or more so. For that reason I m gonna play it on first day of release divorced from the net.... When I ve finished I ll may be a bastard and place it on the forum?!

No I won't... But you can bet some idiots will!

  • Drakron #26 2 years ago

"Now if the ending of Silent HIll 2 was revealed and hinted heavily ..."

Well considering they are several endings ... I think you mean when we learned about Mary (that is a bit before the ending) that in hindsight should been obvious but still come somewhat of a shock.

  • The-Bodybuilder #27 2 years ago

Haven't people considered that the whole "a.wake= awake" and "wake up alan" is all just a double-bluff? I mean, him being asleep or in a coma, or dream-like world seems all too obvious.

The ending will be a DLC
  • solidSnake04 #29 2 years ago

i still think the game's cover is creepy ! half the man's head is missing !
  • man.the.king #30 2 years ago

With this kind of game (and given the penchant for people to include spoilers in describing anything), this is just the way it should be.

EDIT: Just noticed (should have noticed this earlier) that the ending won't be available to reviewers as well. If that is the case, then I agree with cobaltfram - this is pretentious and stupid.

JJrabbit's comment beat me to it.

Either DLC, or the game will end on a cliffhanger and we'll be told that the game is intended to be the first of a trilogy :(

Pleasepleaseplease be as good as it promises
  • kongzi #33 2 years ago

you know what they should do? release the goddamn thing already. I'm only gonna buy AC2 and MW2 because there is crap all that really interests me coming out between now and like April next year.
  • Chalee #34 2 years ago

Suddenly all the 'would you kindly' comments you hear throughout the game start to make sense!
  • cobaltfram #35 2 years ago

This is stunningly stupid. If you go to any credible website, they will not spoil the ending of the game for you. If you want to spoil the end of a game, you go to message boards and blogs, and are actively seeking to spoil it. Cloak and dagger nonsense like this doesn't do anything but make you seem pretentious.
  • frankfurter209 #36 2 years ago

Hey whatever, I still want this game more than a dozen MW2s
