AITD gets name change on PS3

Inferno subhead to spotlight change.

Atari has added the subtitle Inferno to the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark, which is due out in November.

AITD Infero is the result of months of extra work because, after all, rather a lot of Alone in the Dark on Xbox 360 needed addressing.

That's lead to full 360 degree camera control, for starters, plus quicker and more reactive controls. The flasher-style inventory is now quicker to access, too, and there are lots more tips and tutorials for features such as Spectral Vision, which, incidentally, now needs to be used less throughout the game.

On top of all this are reworked driving controls and an overhaul of the 59th Street level. And to finish the package off, there's a new gameplay sequence in episode 6.

The result, we concluded from our recent hands-on with the PS3 version, is a better experience than on Xbox 360 earlier in the year. But there's still a large proportion of clunky and unfair mechanics - those, unfortunately, only starting from scratch could remedy.

Head over to our hands-on impressions of Alone in the Dark: Inferno to find out more.

Will there be a re-review for the PS3 version? Because if the 'superior' version scores higher than the original's 7/10 it will be pretty criminal (assuming no major content changes are in order).

I'm not bothering with this (I only played the 360 demo and that didn't impress me one iota), instead I've opted for Silent Hill: Homecoming as it looks like the more decent survival horror game. I loved SH 2 on the PS2.

(Thanks to miiiguel for pointing out my mistake!)

The subtitle is fair enough if they've really put effort into reworking the game... it would be unfair if a superior release and their effort went to waste because of a tainted reputation. Mind you, being released so close to Silent Hill: Homecoming and Resident Evil 5, they're in for a rough ride, not to mention Siren is available already.

Sorry Miiiguel... I obviously meant the PS2! But then I might have been playing on my backwards compatible PS3! ;)

Err.. reviews of SH:H don't look like it's going to be much better! :o

At least the XBOTs should be happy beta testing a game for PS3.

"Why would it be criminal for the PS3 game to score higher than the original 'Triggerhappytel'?"

Because I don't believe that even with these changes the game will be worth higher than 7/10 - like I said, unless there are some really significant content changes taking place. I just thought the game was a bit average, and even with a reworked and streamlined interface and experience, the actual gameplay doesn't deserve more than 7/10.

@Triggerhappytel - Well, if the changes are enough to improve the enough to make it worth a higher score, if should get a higher score. If the game is still fundimentally broken and the changes do little to improve the game, then it shouldn't. Not being patronising, but it's as simple as that in my eyes.

Uh? Resident Evil 5 isn't out until March 2009.

^That's close proximity in my book tbh.

has anyone here ever been alone in a dark inferno? i would think that to be an impossibility. perhaps blindfolds were involved.

If they really can make the game any better with these improvements, then great, and it'll be good for PS3 owners to get the game that Xbox 360 owners should have had. I've certainly got no problems with PS3 owners getting a superior product, but I'm bloody furious that the X360 version was quite clearly unfinished, and they had better do their best to patch it.

If they do, I would be more than happy to have a second look at it. In the meantime, any mention of Alone in the Dark, makes me see the red mist.

If you want a really good survival horror game neither this or Silent Hill homecoming will do. Dead Space on the other hand looks to be phenomenal. Buy Dead Space. I know i will.
