Quirky monster-making puzzler Incredipede launches next week on PC

Its creator is skeptical of Steam Greenlight, though.

Physics-based PC puzzler Incredipede - "a game about life and feet" that tasks you with customising a morphing creature to navigating various terrain - is set for release on 25th October, creator Colin Northway announced.

The game will be available at the developer's site for $15, while pre-orders get it 20 per cent off at $11.99. Those who pre-order it get early beta access, which Northway hinted may have gone live today. "Pre-order people watch your in-boxes today," he said in his announcement tweet.

Incredipede is comprised of 60 stages transpiring across three worlds. Additionally, there will be a level editor, so players can design and share their own stages with each other or challenge others to control their unique Incredipede.

There's currently a Steam Greenlight page up for Incredipede as well, though Northway seems skeptical about the Greenlight process.

""If Greenlight didn't exist, Valve might have accepted Incredipede earlier and it would be launching on Steam," he said in an interview with Joystiq last week. "Instead Incredipede will do what a lot of other great games are going to do: launch without Steam, get a bunch of players, and then leverage the fanbase to climb the Greenlight ranks and release on Steam later."

He cited Kyle Pulver's Offspring Fling as a game that followed such a trajectory before Greenlight existed.

Despite his skepticism with the system turning into a popularity contest where developers have to convince all of the internet rather than just Valve that their game is worth accepting, Northway remains a fan of Valve and suggests that these are mere kinks the studio needs to work out of its new system.

"I know they're taking an iterative approach to Greenlight, as they do with everything, and are generally open to feedback on the new system," he noted.
