Super Mario 3D Land first 3DS game to sell over 5m

Nintendo reveals 3DS game sales figures.

Super Mario 3D Land is the first Nintendo 3DS game to sell over five million copies.

To be exact, the wonderful platformer has shifted 5.03 million copies globally since launch.

It's easily the best-selling 3DS game. Mario Kart 7, in second place, has shifted 4.54 million units around the world.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D has sold 2.49 million copies worldwide.

The 3DS games have some way to go before emulating the best-selling DS games, however.

New Super Mario Bros., for example, has sold an eye-watering 28.74 million copies in its lifetime. Mario Kart DS has sold 22.3 million units.

Meanwhile, Nintendo revealed Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has sold 3.42 million copies globally.

Shock horror! Maybe the fact that they've been on the market for a small fraction of the time might have something to do with it.

    Well done on sales anyhoo.

Not a ground breaking difference and one of them is a remake :p can see why Nintendo loves remakes, theyre easy $$

Having two games with over 5 million sales in your first year is pretty good going.

'Super Mario 3D first title worth buying'

So I guess the 3DS is a success after all. Now it needs a third party game to hit that number.

Really glad Skyward Sword has done some decent numbers.

Now it needs a new IP to hit anywhere near that number.

Apparently resi evil is clocking up good numbers and selling out in both territories

@darkmorgado absolutely bloody brilliant game. Nk idea how they continually churn out Mario game after Mario game and they are still fantastic and fresh

Resident evil will sell in its bucketloads, it the first real 'big' game that hasnt got Nintendo characters in it. Whether is will match mario is unlikely though as I imagine every man, woman and child is buying Mario, Resi is slightly more niche.

Not surprised about Skyward Sword. Once the 'yay more zelda!' wears off, you kind of miss the old formula. I went back to playing Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, because SS just isn't quite right to me.

It's a good game, but in the pantheon of zelda games? It's probably my least favourite (I don't count the NES games, I go from LTTP onwards).

Mario 3D was the 3DS's launch title, no wonder it sold well. Would have been nice to have it at the 3DS launch though.

Don't mention Resi, mine hasn't arrived yet :(

Mario 3D Land is absolute quality, no surprises to see it doing well.

How many of those were in the cheap Ice-White 3DS bundle? My 9-year old kid loves all things Mario but got bored of this after a few hours and went back to Pokemon.

    >Mario Kart 7, in second place

Thanks to a well-timed blue shell from Super Mario 3D Land. Hoist by its own petard.

I'm not convinced Resident Evil Revelations will sell that well (not in the UK anyway). TV marketing has been pretty low. I've actually seen more TV ads publicising the Resident Evil 6 trailer on youtube..than the 3DS game :|.

    You don't market..you don't sell.

Picked this up with the Ice White bundle myself last week. Very nice little game, especially for people who like platforming. Probably the best pure 3D platformer ever made. Kind of miss the exploration of SM64 and even some Super Mario Galaxy levels though.
