Wii going for £89 at Asda

Tempted?

The Nintendo Wii has fallen to £89 in the UK - its lowest ever price in shops.

Supermarket Asda advertised the eye-catching price in today's papers, MCV reports.

The offer includes a white Wii, Wii Sports and Wii Party.

This Christmas Nintendo will be keen to make the most of the ageing Wii, which launched in Europe in December 2006. Its home console successor, the Wii U, launches at some point next year.

The "ageing wii" which launched a year after the presumably ancient xbox 360 was unearthed by archaeologists.

    Tempted?

    Not really.

I still think it's too expensive. I picked up a pre-owned one the other day for £50 and felt like I'd been mugged.

Drop the price of the Nintendo DSi XL and I'm interested.

Is this the new model without Gamecube compatibility? It's not a bad deal, especially for those who sold their Wii a while back but want to play Zelda next week. I'm sure there'll be one or two.
  • neilka #8 7 months ago

    Still about £88.90 too expensive.
  • eviroboy #9 7 months ago

    Morons.

It's a great price for a console that is all about games being fun. You don't need high definition visuals to make a great game. Mario, Metroid, Zelda. Do you so called 'gamers' remember that word, you know, FUN!?

If you don't already own one it's a great price!
  • GiarcYekrub #10 7 months ago

Bought one a couple months ago when they annouced they were dropping Gamecube support
  • Rack #11 7 months ago

Mario Galaxy is an astonishing game that demands playing and it's possible Skyward Sword will be as well. But that aside there's not a lot on the Wii that's worth getting a console for. You might pick up and enjoy Punch out, Trauma Centre, Silent Hill, NSMB and Sin and Punishment 2 but honestly it would be hard to find time for them now.
  • mr_pink #12 7 months ago

As corporations go, ASDA is particularly lacking in moral fibre (lowest ethical company index score among the supermarkets). Just something else to consider.
  • Retro_ #13 7 months ago

    @eviroboy

Are we really morons for thinking the Wii is still overpriced at £90? granted, it has a handful of decent games, but that is it, the other 98% are utter dross shovelware. Of the 2% that are classics, 100% are running sub HD which is actually quite important in this current and ageing generation of consoles.

I don't think you are a moron for loving the Wii, I do feel a little sorry for you though.

    What is this, Hotdeals?
  • barkertron #15 7 months ago

@mr_pink Don't worry, I'm sure that the ethically responsible folks over at Tesco will come up with a better deal, as long as they're not too busy dodging millions in corporation tax or flattening old dears' corner shops in their sinister virus-like quest for constant expansion.

Maybe Sainsbury's will step in with an even better deal that only requires you to staple Jamie Oliver's stupid fat face to the inside of your eyelids for the next three months. I love supermarkets.

Anyone else think EG is fast becoming HUKD?
  • abczyx #18 7 months ago

@Whatascoop Yes, but the Wii was already six years out of date when it launched!

Please try hooking up a Wii to a Full HD TV and enjoy the "crisp" picture before saying this is a "bargain".
  • playgen #21 7 months ago

"You don't need high definition visuals to make a great game."

Yeah but having great games WITH great visuals would have been better.

For £90 I think it should have two controllers bundled. Its not a cheap set when you think that you'll basically need more than one controller to make the two bundled games fun.

Seriously, the Wii was already aged when it was released back in 2006! It is after all little more than an enhanced GameCube, which itself was released in 2002, with motion controls and online functionality added on. That's why it runs GameCube games so flawlessly; it isn't emulating them, it is actually running them! ;)
  • wayn3h #23 7 months ago

Of course it's ageing. It's not like it was even approaching cutting edge even back when it was released. Fair comment imo.

Just recently dug out my SNES for a blast on some proper classics. Secret of Mana, Illusion of Time, F-Zero, DKC2 etc. Ya know, when Nintendo actually made decent 1st party games and had decent 3rd party support. From my brief encounter with owning a Wii I'm pretty sure I'd have more enjoyment with my 20 year old SD console than the Wii.

    Pass.

I've already brought 2 Wii''s and inevitably ended up trading them in. I dont think I need a 3rd... though Skyward Sword is tempting.
  • AaronTurner #25 7 months ago

I had one and to be honest it just never clicked with me. Call me shallow but I enjoy better looking games and if you're not predisposed to bright colours and fluffy animals then there isn't much to entice you. Not a criticism as such, just an observation.
  • stodgypudding #26 7 months ago

ah the poor old Wii, the laughing stock with it's sub hd graphics. It's a little like a moped, quite a laugh to ride every now and again but you maybe wouldn't want to admit it to your mates.
  • captainCandy #27 7 months ago

Tempted to buy a Wii console in 2011 that was yesterday's tech when it launched in 2006? Not really.
  • Ryze #28 7 months ago

    Is it the 'tard pack?

    Gamecube compatibility?
  • Acquiescence #29 7 months ago

Worst console I've ever owned, and I got one on launch day amidst the twilight days when motion gaming was an exciting marvel and the next evolutionary step in video gaming as we know it. It wasn't of course: waggle sucks, Kinect sucks and the Move sucks. My advice is to save your £89. Spend it on a bath filled with lemon jelly or something.
  • DiamondIce #30 7 months ago

I would be tempted if my already limited gaming time wasn't being engulfed by Battlefield 3. I would dearly love to play Mario and Zelda again.

I wish I didn't need to sleep - so many wasted hours.
  • Mister-Wario #31 7 months ago

Wow, that is a heck of a deal.

I remember when we got the Wii Fit Bundle for around £200. Wow, that was just a remarkable time. Because, you know, the Wii was still this revolutionary, magical thing, and I don't regret getting one at all.
  • irrelevanthuman #32 7 months ago

Skyward Sword is the only game thats tempting me to pick up my third wii, but not at this price. Would go for a second hand. Anyway, hardly a dearth of games to be getting on with at the mo!
  • mr_pink #33 7 months ago

    @EddieMink That's hardly a substitute.
  • Lucodeath #34 7 months ago

  • Yuroko #35 7 months ago

Chuck in Zelda and I'll give you £100 cash - today!
  • Centrifugal #36 7 months ago

Picked one up the other week for £45 in preparation for Skyward Sword. I've been enjoying a bit of Mario Galaxy and Metroid since; haven't had the console since 2008 when I sold it (for a ridiculous £250 to some poor bloke on Ebay) to get an Xbox, so there's a few games to catch up on.

It's a good console, but has definite failings. I just can't wait for Skyward Sword.
  • FenderMaster #37 7 months ago

my Wii's been in a drawer since Mario Galaxy 2. Dug it out the other day to make sure it's still working before getting Skyward Sword, but no. Not even a Wii lens cleaner helped.

Honestly, this has to be the least robust geconsole generation ever. RROD may have got the headlines, but PS3 and Wii were also pretty shoddy...

I'll probably opt for a repair though since theres no Asda in my neck of the woods, can't miss a new Zelda, Christmas wouldn't be the same without it!
  • Quint2020 #38 7 months ago

    Nope, not at all.
  • jetsetwillie #39 7 months ago

i do want a new wii for Zelda. i can't not play zelda.

but im going to go second hand and get on for about £50 if i can.
  • jarvisio #40 7 months ago

It is worth it for Xenoblade Chronicles, best JRPG of this generation!
  • wizbob #41 7 months ago

I'm waiting for the PS3 to come down to a similar price - the games are already cheap enough. I think I'm going to pass on the 360 though, I'm not bothered by the Halo series and Lost Planet 1 & 2 wouldn't make me give up the space under the telly.
  • emhaslam92 #42 7 months ago

Surely everyone who has ever been slightly tempted to buy a Wii has already bought one...
  • knocker #43 7 months ago

Can't understand why any gamers wouldn't buy almost any console when it hits this sort of price to be honest.

There are games on that platform you can't have on any others and .... oh yeah. Not enough pixels.

  • higgins78 #45 7 months ago

    @eviroboy

Weird to hear somebody in these forum seeing past the "HD" tag of old...I was starting to think I was a dying breed. £80! For that you get arguably the best console available to be played over the Christmas period, though I would personally try and find a deal elsewhere which - if money isn't too tight - includes Wii Sports Resort/Motion Plus. Pick up Skyward Sword in a couple of weeks and I guarantee you have the best Christmas ever on a console.
  • NotSoSlim #46 7 months ago

Cheaper to run my games on dolphin emulator
  • Softie2k #47 7 months ago

Ahh, I remember when the Wii was being bought more than pot noodles at a uni corner shop.
  • Pumpatron #48 7 months ago

Nope, my flatmate has one. But even if he didn't I still wouldn't be tempted. Maybe at £40, if I was board, and my 360 was broken.
  • FuzzyDuck #49 7 months ago

Haters gonna hate, but as already said, there's some superlative games (remember those?) available on the Wii that you won't find elsewhere.
  • Bander #50 7 months ago

First thing I thought of when reading this story was getting one just to run some old GameCube favourites, in addition to maybe grabbing Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade, and whatever catches my eye and is cheap. But from the above comments, it appears that the Wii can't do this any more.

Is this really the case, or can GC games still be played but with controllers other than GC ones?
  • Drunk-Si #51 7 months ago

Whether there are fun games on the Wii or not is irrelevant; for what you're actually buying they're still fleecing you for a bit of kit that was outdated and overpriced even when it first came out.
    Edited by Drunk-Si at 07/11/11 @ 18:19
  • Rack #52 7 months ago

@Drunk-Si Is it really? I mean sure Nintendo are making a profit, but it's £250 for Wii Party, 2 controllers, Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy 1, 2, NSMBW and Skyward Sword. That's still a bit pricey in many ways but I'd say it's arguably good value for Mario Galaxy alone. You can complain about being fleeced or you can have a damn good time. I'd say the second is probably healthier.
  • Drunk-Si #53 7 months ago

I'm not getting fleeced myself because I'm not actually going to spend my money on it so I'm not actually complaining about anything, just making an observation. We obviously both perceive value differently and that's fine.
  • RawNinjaKid #54 7 months ago

I am re-buying a wii soon, just to play Zelda: Skyward Sword!

Yeah, I think it's worth it, since the sole PS3 isn't quite keeping me satisfied.
  • Duallusion #55 7 months ago

Sue me but I don't enjoy playing games in SD on a HDTV. Sold my Wii two years ago. I do hope though, that Galaxy 2, Skyward Sword and a couple of others must-have Wii games will get a re-release on Wii U, which I am planning to get ASAP. If it won't be too similar power-wise then X360/PS3, that is...

  • Stepharneo #61 7 months ago

I got a Wii (pre-owned), super mario galaxy 1 & 2 and super paper mario and I've spent about £90. The only other game I want is Donkey Kong, but I've not seen it cheap anywhere yet.
I've completed galaxy 1 and I'm half way through paper mario and I've enjoyed the console a lot, but there isn't much else I want for it. Was tempted by the zelda skyward sword + gold controller bundle, but then I played it at the Expo and really didn't think much of it.
If you compare the amount I've spent on the console and the fun that it's given me compared to the my ps3 or steam account I'd say it is very good bang for buck, but I'm glad I waited until now to buy a Wii.

I'm (finally) getting one from Xmas. Can someone list a rundown of all the great (and not so great, but still novel/fun/original) games worth playing? Mario galaxies 1 + 2, zeldas... what else?
  • Futaba #63 7 months ago

    @Bluetooth
Metroid, Silent Hill, No More Heroes 1+2, Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, Trauma Centre.
