Just Cause 3 in development - report

Sources claim it'll be out next year.

Work on a third installment in Avalanche Studios' Just Cause series is underway, with the finished game due out some time next year, so says Xbox World magazine sources.

As reported by CVG, a note in the UK publication's news section reads: "Our spies say devs Avalanche are hard at work as we speak, and that it's set for release next year."

Publisher Sega has so far declined to comment but, if true, a sequel wouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Earlier this year, series creator Christofer Sundberg told Eurogamer that the developer was working on two "huge" titles for release in 2013.

"I can't see that Avalanche wouldn't want to continue on the Just Cause series," added senior producer Andreas Thorsén said. "We love that franchise."

The last entry in the open world action series arrived on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, winning an 8/10 from Eurogamer. Check out our Just Cause 2 review for details.

Since then the Swedish developer has released excellent downloadable twin stick shooter Renegade Ops and opened a New York office to work on an unannounced next-gen project.

    Yes please!

It's daft but it's fun and it looks great.

All right then..JC2 was a blast, but there's lots of room for improvement for the third game. I'd like to see upgrades for the grapple, esp in an offensive capacity. The game is already out there in terms of realism so why not have the option of imbuing the grapple with electroshock or fire? The grapple melee attack was shit after all. Destructible environs would be cool, too, rather than just blowing up clearly marked gas reserves and satellite dishes and the like, I want to explode some buildings. All in all, this is a good bit of gaming news.

Wait, this may sound tired but seriously. Just Cause 2 is as good as Uncharted 3!? If true, disappointed.

By SEGA I assume you mean SquareEnix.
  • Triggerhappytel #5 7 months ago

Sega? The Just Because series is owned by Eidos; ie now by Squeenix. #2 was a great game, but as mentioned above there's loads of things which need improving.

Great news, JC2 was my favourite game of last year. So much damn fun.
  • ronuds #7 7 months ago

I enjoyed JC2 quite a bit. My hope is for a more interactive environment with the new one.

Really like Just Cause 2, me and my friends often play it just for fun. I'd really like co-op to be included, two people in two helicopters which are grappled onto a tank which a third person is sat in shooting it's cannon whilst flying through the air would be immense fun for all involved!

All it needs over JC2 is multiplayer and it'd be a better game!

Not surprised no comment from Sega :)

I think I spent more hours in JC2 than anything in the last year. Maybe the only thing I'd like is the option to sometimes have stealth kills. I'd find this guy guarding some roadblock by himself in the middle of no where, bump him off with one shot, and suddenly helicopters and trucks turn up! Who let 'em know?

Please shell out for good voice overs this time, ok it was hilarious to listen to...

Give us more stuff to do. The missions were the worst part of the game, they should make better use of the enormous map.
  • A_Nonny #14 7 months ago

Oh God let this be true. I won't have to buy Saint's Row 3 if this is coming out.
  • evilkid #15 7 months ago

I loved JC2. I have never put so many hours into a game as that (except maybe populous 2 back in the day).

    Can't wait.

I hope they make the campaign longer this time. I did loads of side missions between the main missions but I was a bit disappointed that by the time I reached the end, I had completed just under 30% of the entire game.

There was so much left that could be done but doing so didn't serve a greater purpose as the story was over and I thought that was a real shame.

Loved JC2, but now that I'm playing Batman AC, I feel like I already have a better successor to the game.

Please Avalanche, take a look at Batman AC. Study the depth of their side missions and storytelling. With your beautiful engine and game mechanics, all you need is some story driven missions, and mission diversity.

I don't want to be that guy, but a cover system would make the shooting awesome.

they lied about multi player co op patch that was said to be coming after release
  • Kaonazhie #19 7 months ago

If Just Cause 2 had co-op, it would have been one of the most amazing games ever.

So... here's hoping for Just Cause 3.
  • ShiroBen #20 7 months ago

Instead of a cover system, I'd like to see something more kinetic and active and over the top--like an electromagnetic field or similar, hold down a button while you're being shot at and you 'collect' all the bullets, then release to send them back at your attackers. You know, something ridiculous and fun like that.

    YEEEEEEESSSSSS

I loved JC2, think I clocked about 50 hours in total. I literally ran out of things to blow up. One of my favourite games of all time. It's a pure playground like no other game has provided

Awesome! This has me excited enough to type using caps-lock, but I refrain, because I care. Awesome!

I'm still playing JC2 to this day. OK it does get repetitive but for sheer fun you can't beat this game. It's getting more time than Metro and Deus Ex because it doesn't have that frustrating factor, although it do think it's too easy to get the wanted level up. A bit more variety and multiplayer would be fantastic.
  • gallow #24 7 months ago

Superb news. I still love that game and I still play it from time to time now. A game that remembers that games should be fun. Like others have said co-op would great as would increasing the strength of the grapple so that I can attach cars to helicopters or helicopters to jets.
  • FourQ #25 7 months ago

The best news I've heard all year! JC2 was my game of 2010.

Isn't Avalanche Studios part of Eidos, which is now part of Square Enix? Howcome Sega is publishing the next game?
  • Saint_of_Killers #27 7 months ago

    Loved JC2.

I hope they include a mode which lets you have unlimited (or thereabouts) grapple hooks in use.

ok i noticed certain people suggesting stuff that would make a huge improvement for JC3, i also notice everyone has failed to notice the HUGE things that should change, for a start, let us order more than one thing from the black market at a time, instead of having to call him back again and again to get 2 different guns and a helicopter, if you buy something from the black market (example - parachute thrusters DLC for JC2) and you die, you still keep the item and don't have to pay to purchase it again, make health kits an item you can buy from the black market instead of making us hunt high and low through locations to find one, there we go rant over :) anyone else agree with me?
