UK top 40: FIFA denies Rage, Dark Souls

But newcomers debut strongly.

Phenomenally popular football game FIFA 12 has beaten strong opposition from newcomers Rage and Dark Souls this week to remain top of the UK all-formats software chart.

FIFA 12 sales dipped 68 per cent, but its weekly tally was still big enough to be crowned the 13th highest ever in the UK.

Rage entered second, with 58 per cent of sales on Xbox 360 and 32 per cent on PS3. PC numbers weren't disclosed, but digital sales aren't counted by Gfk Chart-Track anyway.

Dark Souls entered third, with 58 per cent of sales going to PS3 - the platform to which Demon's Souls belonged.

From fourth to 10th are: Gears of War 3, F1 2011, Zumba Fitness, Dead Island, Deus Ex, Lego Pirates and Resistance 3.

NBA 2K12 was the other newcomer this week, and finished 12th.

Dark Souls will destroy us all...
  • Goodfella #2 8 months ago

I hope Dark Souls makes it to number one but I very much doubt it. :/

Good to see Resistance holding on in there...!

Hopefully Pes12 makes a huge dent in Fifa sales next week.

Super-glad to see Dark Souls making such a strong entrance. Not had the time to play more than the tutorial so far but.... well, it's definitely the sequel to Demon's Souls!

Was really pleased to see the special edition free stuff coming with my copy as well- art book, soundtrack CD, making of, all for free. Really nice package.

Dark souls at number 3 next week
replacement controllers on top of the chart next week
  • gillri #7 8 months ago

Yes aI think R3 had a price drop as well didnt it?

I expect FIFA 2012 will stay up there until Batman Arkhan City comes out but even then it'll be close as FIF 2012 is a beast, lets face only MW3 could topple FIFA 2012 if they came ot on the same week

Also very surprised to see Deus Ex still up there, glad that sold so well being a fan of the original and all

im so glad we have these weekly sales figures to see whats going on

I mean the US doesnt get them do they

"Rage entered second, with 58 per cent of sales on Xbox 360 and 32 per cent on PS3. PC numbers weren't disclosed, but digital sales aren't counted by Gfk Chart-Track anyway. "

Nnnngh. Surely I'm not the only person who gets a headache from this? The numbers you give only add up to 90, implying that the last ten percent of sales were PC. But if PC digital sales aren't counted, that invalidates the numbers quoted for the 360 and PS3 shares too, making the whole thing futile.

Anyway, that Fifa 12 sales could drop by such a massive amount and still out-sell everything else gives a good perspective on what a chasm there is between it and pretty much everything else coming out these days.

I've only read some reviews and watched a few walkthroughs on Youtube so far but Dark Souls looks immense!!

Nice to see it getting the success it deserves. Hopefully it'll stay in the top 10 for a while.
  • betonos #14 8 months ago

Ocarina of Time for 3DS is no longer in top 40... I know that 3DS is no winner in the terms of sales, but still - disappointing.
  • HyperTails #15 8 months ago

Is Rage any good? Might pick it up today on PS3, but i've heard that its not really that great (as a game, not just a port). Otherwise i'll be getting Crysis 2.
  • Architect_z #16 8 months ago

Dark Souls represent. Completley agree with 'smithdown'. This game is going to be the death of me. It's just so difficult! But I'm absolutley loving it, i've only just killed that taurus douschebag and already its my GOTY. lol

Plus i'm loving the comments. Everyones obviously struggling with this game but also seeing just how incredible it is if you stick with it.

    For Gillri.

Nope, Resistance 3 still at £40.
  • Gearskin #20 8 months ago

    Dark Souls is anti-fun
  • landlock #21 8 months ago

    @Haerger Resistance 3 was never £40.

No love for The Cursed Crusade then, LOL. Guess I'm the only person who brought it haha.
  • Shabbaranks #22 8 months ago

Dark souls is by far the best game I've played in a long time, yes it's very very hard.

But the feeling you get when you roll off a bridge to avoid an enemy and die when you just about to pick up your souls from when you last died.............
  • Lunastra78 #23 8 months ago

Good to see Dark Souls selling so well on 360 too. I guess many of you will be running out to buy a PS3 and Demon's Souls as soon as you finish it. ;)
  • menage #24 8 months ago

Dark Souls is hard I agree, but somehow I'm findng it a lot more doable then Demons Souls. It's not having to repeat the same old levels over and over again which makes it less of a repitive drag this time around. And the farming area is a godsend.

I got invaded this morning as well playing Dark Souls offline. I was so surprised my character just stood there while she got chopped up! :-)
  • Retro_ #27 8 months ago

Great top ten, apart from Zumba that is.

Dark Souls just arrived, Just need to complete the very underrated Dead Island before I start it...and Rage... and SOTC/ICO collection. Oh shit, BF3, Batman and Uncharted 3 all within a month, not sure the wallet can take it !!
  • ryanbreck #28 8 months ago

Will be interesting to see how Dark Souls fares with the wider public. There seems to be more hype for it now than for the release of Demon's Souls, but by its nature, it appeals more to the sort of experienced/less casual players you find reviewing or on forums. I love it, but even as a relatively serious gamer, it's requiring a lot more work and dedication than usual. I'm sure there will be a few purchasers who just will not get to grips with it at all.
  • waggy79 #29 8 months ago

    @ryanbreck

Im one of them i think. Own the original, couldnt get on with it. Still thought id try the sequel, beat taurus but now every direction i try i get owned. Got to the point where i thought 'im not having fun now'. I can see im in the minority judging by comments, i love the graphics and whole 'look' of it but maybe im playing it wrong...
  • dudefella #30 8 months ago

Wow I did not expect Dark Souls to crack the top 3, awesome!
  • apoc_reg #31 8 months ago

Top 3 for dark souls, great stuff!!

    The game is sooo good
  • Daeltaja #32 8 months ago

Great to see Dark Souls at 3, it could easily have been much much worse considering the 'nicheness' of it.

Glad to see real games still have a place in this day and age!
  • Darren #33 8 months ago

Good to see Dark Souls selling well.

I got my copy on Saturday (along with RAGE) and have clocked up about four hours on it so far. I'm really enjoying it even though I've died loads of times but the combat feels great, tough but fair, and the way the game throws new equipment at me increases the urge to carry on. The level design is terrific too with lots of different routes and places to find, so much so that I've spent half that time, about two hours, just saving at the third bonfire (surely more of a camp fire?) and killing all the enemies over and over again to increase my Souls. In lesser games that would feel repetitive but in Dark Souls it works brilliantly.

I've only killed one boss so far, the demon from the tutorial section, but that took ten attempts due to unfamilarity with the controls (I kept pressing the face buttons to fight instead of the triggers)! Despite the difficulty, I genuinely feel I'm learning how to play the game and it hasn't been offputtingly punishing so far. Every succesful fight gives me a sense of progress and each point of XP affords me the confidence to confront the next enemy. I'm near the tower but I know what waits for me there from the gameplay videos I've seen. It's just a case of summoning up the courage to actually go there though... soon though, soon...

What sort of sales would NBA 2K12 estimatedly do, to chart 12th? Based on the increased familiarity and visibility of some of the others above it, that would seem to me to be some accomplishment...

@8: NPD tracking (including digital sales) is starting for this region, this month. It's likely that will offer a far more comprehensive view of what's going on, and if EG sign up to it, we'll get to see what the state of sales is.

Rage is awesome, thoroughly enjoying it so far
  • Arsecake_Baker #36 8 months ago

DS is undoubtely my GOTY maybe even the best game this gen so far....so it saddens me to see it in third beaten by a football game, if there is anything more crass, tawdry, dull and downright heinous than bloody football, i have yet to come across it!

C'mon DS, break out Ceaseless Discharge and devour the whole laughable "sport"
  • RichyRichh77 #37 8 months ago

I've held off Dark Souls due to grabbing a number of other games recently but I'm really tempted, could people confirm a few things.

With the lead platform being the PS3 does the XBox360 do this game justice? I'm aware that the Digital Foundry vids suggest its pretty much like-for-like but wondered whether others could vouch for that.

Also how well implemented are the online 'invasions' and can they be turned off? Not having played Demon Souls and simply reading about this aspect of the game, it's the one area that gives me pause for thought - battling through a section for several hours only to be ganked by some random doesn't sound like fun to me. Or doesn't this affect the flow of the game too much?
  • menage #38 8 months ago

You can play offline if you want, and when you're not in human form (95% of the game) you can't be invaded.
  • FenderMaster #39 8 months ago

Seeing something as niche and hardcore as Dark Souls make it to number 2 is mighty impressive! It really doesn't matter that it didn't make number 1, it's still right up at the top of all format charts outside Japan!

Good to sewe Deus Ex HR doing well too!o
  • Stomp224 #40 8 months ago

I question the legitimacy of Rage being at two, because when I picked up Dark Souls it was being sold with £10 discount (at gamestation)

Unless I was imagining it??? Its a possibility, old age is beginning to kick in.
  • Ror1984 #41 8 months ago

Wow, I'm very pleasantly surprised to see Dark Souls hit third! I'm very much enjoying it - it's a great feeling just being able to explore a little further each time - indeed, that's how I came upon Taurus, merely out of curiosity! Quite unprepared I was too - and no one told me he could jump up to the towers to smack you! - in hindsight, approaching him at level seven was a bad idea. Luckily, grinding is generally good fun in this game. Maybe it's the risk/reward system that somehow manages to make battling standard enemies an often heart-in-mouth experience.

I think it's going to take me months to get through this game. In a sense, it reminds me of when I was younger and would get maybe 2 or 3 games a year at most, and so had to make those buggers last!

It's also good to see Gears 3 still up there :)
  • Vyggo #42 8 months ago

I bought 2 new games last week, something I almost never do (buying new games in general).

Dark Souls is one of the best games I have ever played. About 30 hours into it and totally addicted. Just rang the second bell (yes I am slow) and I have around 3 zones I am contemplating tackling next, and a couple of sub bosses that I skipped in older zones.

Then there is nba 2k12. Released with hardly any fanfare, it's probably the best sportsgame I have ever played. I don't really follow the nba but I always loved the sport, and it's beautifully realized in this game.
