"Extreme" violence now "realistic".

The toned down version of Heavy Rain spotted on pan-European ratings board PEGI is exclusive to France, Sony has told Eurogamer.

Heavy Rain Edition Modifiée is redesigned to be suitable for those aged 16 and over only.

The original European version carried a PEGI 18 certificate.

PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavy Rain contains "extreme violence, violence towards defenceless people, sexual violence and strong language," according to PEGI's rating.

Heavy Rain Edition Modifiée, however, contains "realistic looking violence, nudity of a sexual nature, and strong language".

"This is just a small initiative for France only," a Sony spokesperson said.

In the UK the BBFC awarded David Cage's superb thriller a 15 rating with no cuts.

Good work English ratings board. 18 everywhere else, but a solid 15 in England. Won't somebody think of the children?

I don't recall anything particularly extreme in Heavy Rain at all. That said it's been a while since I played it and everyone survived in my playthough. Did I miss some sort of comedy OTT death scene?

I have to say that the part with the finger and the knife was the most sickening but also most brilliant usage of violence in a videogame ever. I wonder if they toned that down in the French version.

I really hope there is a follow up / next game in a similar style to Heavy rain soon... it was SUCH a good game an an entirely captivating experience... loved every minute of it

Considering that France is one of the least restricting countries in terms of movie and game ratings, I smell a desperate attempt by Sony at making Heavy Rain more "family" friendly. Expect this new "modified edition" to hit the rest of the world if that initiative successfully translates in a few more sales.
