Frostbite 2-based Mirror's Edge coming?

"You'll see that combination, I'm sure."

Electronic Arts executive Frank Gibeau has hinted that we could see a new Mirror's Edge game built with the Frostbite 2 engine in the future.

"We haven't killed Mirror's Edge," he told GameTrailers host Geoff Keighley.

"We're actively looking at how to bring it back in the right way. We love that franchise, the DICE guys really created something special the first time around. You've got to have a big idea to be able to do the next one, and that's what we're working on."

Perhaps that new idea might involve Frostbite 2, the spanky new engine DICE is using for Battlefield 3? Perhaps indeed.

"Mirror's Edge, Frostbite 2 - I'm there," said Keighley.

"You'll see that combination, I'm sure," Gibeau replied.

So much for that report back in February that a Mirror's Edge 2 pitch had been rejected. Even then, EA told us the franchise is "still important" as far as they're concerned.

The original Mirror's Edge was released back in 2008, when parkour was still cool. Why not reminisce about the good old times with our recent retrospective?

I thought BF Bad Company 2 used Frostbite 2?
  • Inmediasress #2 12 months ago

Well after I herad they want to broaden the appeal and "bring it back the right way".
I'm pretty sure it will have nothing to do with the original mirrors edge. Probably an action fps with better jumping will be the
"bring it back the right way".
Who knows maybe they don't butcher it completely but I can already see it's not going to be as awsome as shall we say Portal2 in terms of sequels that is.

Add guns, give us the game Brink promised to be.
  • TheEarlOfZinger #6 12 months ago

I wasn't sure when I played the demo so didn't buy it. But, it's a brand new series - so they should bring it back, It's art style was great!
  • dagas #7 12 months ago

@SBfistfun I thought so too, but wikipedia says BC2 uses Frostbite 1.5
  • SBfistfun #8 12 months ago

    OOh there you go then
  • Stroller4 #9 12 months ago

The best news I could have started the day with. Brilliant - an innovative IP gets a sequel. If they build on what was great and fix what was poor, this should be fantastic.

Now please go and make it happen!

I'd be a very happy bunny for some more Mirrors Edgeness.
  • Bernkastel #11 12 months ago

    Make it happen!
  • Shinetop #12 12 months ago

Drop the combat altogether and I'm in.
  • Bennicus #13 12 months ago

Agreed ditch the combat and concentrate on the running & parkour, it had all the depth of a proper racing sim. You wouldn't add weapons to the cars in Forza so why bother here?
  • Pubgrundy #14 12 months ago

battlefield bc2 used the same frostbite engine as the first but it was tweaked and they implemented Destruction 2.0 which made the destruction slightly better.
anyway this is awesome news as the "killing off" of mirrors edge was the worst news of the year for me, truly loved the first game. one of the few ive ever played 3 times, along with MOH:Allied Assault and Mafia.
  • coolbritannia #15 12 months ago

    I'd add guns to Forza.
  • asphaltcowboy #16 12 months ago

Make it actually about being a courier - they build up this whole back story about Faith and her job and after the first mission you never actually courier anything! 8) Let's have an "open"-world and make it actually about delivering stuff and getting there quickly with the occasional mugging/chase/escape/other ambient events.
  • tomjoadsghost #17 12 months ago

I'd like to see a mirrors edge 0 really, the whole courier thing is kind of appealing and they can still have a unfolding conspiracy of sorts if they wish.

For enemies i'd really rather be running away from security guards and dogs than armed guys and if they felt like it they could explain the increasing efficiency of the guards as being the security firm from the first game gaining more clients and power as a response to the threat caused by the evil runners.

edit: actually i think asphalt cowboy said it far more succinctly than i did, and proved how slow i am at typing to boot!

Im hoping that its a given that they should keep faith *exactly* how she is, and keep the song (or get lisa miskovsky to do a new one)

just time trials, online scoreboards and some new courses released every few months via DLC.

make it XBLA/PSN ditch all the boring stuff from before and your on to a serious winner.

also waaay less risk than a full game release

"We're actively looking at how to bring it back in the right way..."

*Runs that through the EA to English translator*

"We're actively looking to crowbar in multiplayer. If we can't, it won't happen..."
  • Tyrhinis #23 12 months ago

Open-world / sandbox might be the answer, but DICE don't have any experience in that area (no, I'm not counting Midtown Madness).

Less guns, maybe better hand-to-hand, and retaining the art style, music style and artists, control scheme and balance of puzzles to speedruns would make this phenomenal. Frostbite 2 wouldn't hurt, either (not much room for large-scale terrain deformation, but maybe bullets chipping 10cm bits off plaster as you run past?) - and its lighting engine is superb.
  • anthonypappa #24 12 months ago

i don't think it needs a strict storyline. take away the linear stuff, just have a big open playground to soak up (the atmosphere in the first game was the best thing about it)

missions or objectives could open up as you bump into different scenerios. lots of stuff to collect or do, like wrecking anttena's of bad corporations, just loads of things to accomplish that makes an open world satisfying and different people to bump into throughout. could add a stealth element for when you break into office etc for missions...

frostbite 2 would be great for this. the execution is important though, and there are many ways it could go...
  • Mattattattatt #25 12 months ago

Weaving a bit more of the story into the gameplay would be nice – it relied on cutscenes a lot to tell that. I know many games do that, but it's always a better experience to have events unfold when you're actually in the game.

Also a sandbox element could definitely work... I'm picturing the kind of open world racing you get in Burnout Paradise but on foot. Extra timed courier missions could be good too. The time trials etc never really grabbed me in the original.
  • TexMurphy01 #26 12 months ago

Definitely agree with it being a courier job. That would be excellent. You don't have to have combat in games, you know (sorry to break it to you).
  • Lin #27 12 months ago

they should start a new franchise based on the same mechanics. i'm sick of game series' never being good until the second game.
  • disappointed #28 12 months ago

It's got to be open world. Games like Assassin's Creed and inFamous showed how much fun finding your own path through a cityscape can be. If Mirror's Edge were like that, it would trump everything.

No shooting. It cannot have shooting. Some of the hand-to-hand moves are OK as long as they don't break the flow. And no stealth. Running, not sneaking. There's cameras everywhere so it wouldn't work.

There's a lot of love for this game that was not reflected in it's financial success. EA would be missing out if they failed to make a sequel - that's where the real money is.

    Parkour is still cool, surely?

    Good News :D

Can't say I agree with some and the idea of it being sandbox to be honest but being a little more open in the style of crysis so getting from point A to point B has many options would be good. Definitely needs more street level areas and more pedestrians to knock over!

Combat was fun enough in the first game for me so really don't want that to be ditched, just needs a little refinement such as having iron sight aiming. Leaping, turning and falling backwards in slow motion blazing a Steyr TMP was so much fun, Crysis really needed to have taken note :) I replayed the stairwell bit over and over just experimenting with the combat. Also enjoyed first person fighting lol

Disarming was an awesome thing too but you never go to disarm someone unsuspecting from behind much as they always seemed to be looking for you, a stealth element would be perfect for the next!
  • Murton #32 12 months ago

Less combat, more navigation puzzles and you've got a winner.

I'd be perfectly happy with absolutely zero combat and more open levels that can be properly explored, in fact that'd be pretty much a perfect game as far as I'm concerned.
  • drhickman1983 #33 12 months ago

Whilst the focus should be on the free-running and movement, I wouldn't want combat totally removed from the game. Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't want a Battlefield-with-free-running, just make the ability to disarm and knock guards out seem more fluid and natural, and maybe more intergrated into the movement. You can even keep the rather poor gun aiming as Faith isn't a weapons specialist, just get the close combat stuff worked out.

My problem with the combat in the first game wasn't that there was combat, but that the combat was really badly implemented.

    Mirror's Edge 2 Fuck Yah

    Just finished it on PC.

It was already Goergeous on PC can't wait to see it on Frostbite 2 which was designed from the ground up for PC unlike Unreal 3 engine which was used last time and which was created for consoles.
