What next for Guitar Hero DLC?

The day the music died.

Last night Eurogamer broke the news that Activision had closed its Guitar Hero business, effectively killing the music game after five years of groundbreaking success.

During Activision's financial call to investors, publishing boss Eric Hirshberg explained the decision

"Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply cannot make these games profitably, based on current economics and demand," he said.

Then, commenting on the future of the series, he added: "Instead, what we'll do is focus our time and energies on marketing and supporting our strong catalogue of titles and downloadable content, especially to new consumers as the install base for hardware continues to grow."

His comments sparked confusion over the future of Guitar Hero and DJ Hero's downloadable content. Would new DLC continue to be released for both games?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Once February is done and dusted, no more DLC will be released.

"We will release the previously announced DLC track and mix packs for February, but we will not be able to release new DLC packs," reads the Guitar Hero Twitter account.

"We will continue to sell and support our catalogue of Guitar Hero titles including Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock."

And then, adding further clarity, "We will continue to sell and support our catalogue of Guitar Hero and DJ Hero titles including Guitar Hero:WoR and DJ Hero 2."

Only two days ago Activision announced a new 10-song mega pack for the Guitar Hero music library, featuring songs from Black Label Society and Marilyn Manson. We now know it marks the end of an era.
