More Final Fantasy XIV updates ready

New producer gets stuck in.

A new patch for PC MMO Final Fantasy XIV is ready to go live, publisher Square Enix has announced.

According to the game's official site, the update will be available for download tomorrow, bringing with it new monsters, an improved user interface and a number of other tweaks. Here's the full list of what to expect:

  • New enemies, including notorious monsters
  • New guildleves
  • Many new recipes
  • Further improvements to the naming and organization of market wards
  • An additional free retainer slot
  • Improved response times on the retainer exchange interface
  • Further improvements to the user interface
  • Increased text limit for chat log input

This is the second major update for the beleaguered MMO in the last three weeks and the first since Naoki Yoshida took over the producer's chair from Hiromichi Tanaka.

"While more than two months have passed since the official launch of Final Fantasy XIV service, we deeply regret that the game has yet to achieve the level of enjoyability that Final Fantasy fans have come to expect from the franchise, and for this we offer our sincerest of apologies," Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada explained last week.

"After thorough deliberation on how to meet those expectations, it was decided that the most viable step was to approach improvements under new leadership and with a restructured team."

Hoping this does improve things. I know eventually the game will end up i a good state and will be played for many years.

Square-Enix is really in a tough spot with the whole FFXIV disaster.
Good to see that they seem to make an effort to fix things. Hopefully they learn from FFXIV (and to a lesser extent FFXIII, which I still think was quite awesome despite the flaws).

I really feel bad for the whole team working on the project. Must be hell waking up in the morning for everyone involved.

Good luck with the progress chaps.

I really don't get how it wasn't obvious that this should've been done before being released.
Its a pity because they're saying and doing all the right things now but red moose is right - its too late.

Do they still charge for extra character slots?

The problem with MMO's is that if you dont get it right initially and build that groundswell there are far too many other distractions to keep gamers occupied, and they wont come back.

"To be fair i don't think WOW got it right rigth from the start, but that is also the issue, all the MMO's have to go against a MMO that has already made these mistakes, learnt from it and fixed them."

I've played since the beta and although wow wasnt perfect it had none of the problems games like APB and FF had the only thing missing were the boats and they put in NPC's to teleport you for the week they were missing, compared to games like conan it was a very smooth launch.

This fix is too little and too late, they released the game before it was ready and made the mistake of ignoring their beta testers and it bit them in the ass, FFXIV name is now mud and given the number of people going back to XI i doubt it'll be here in 6 month's.

Like I said before, Squeenix just don't deliver as much as they used to...

It doesn't really matter if WoW got it right at the start, people don't care about being fair to a game, they just want the best experience. The reality is any MMO is competing with WoW as it stands now, because that is what the alternative is.

"the game has yet to achieve the level of enjoyability that Final Fantasy fans have come to expect from the franchise"

After 4-5 hours of FF XIII, the level of enjoyability I have come to expect from the franchise = pressing X.
