2m sales of original justify Prototype 2

Plus, first game hits XBL, PSN.

Given the mixed reviews for the original Prototype, a sequel perhaps wasn't a foregone conclusion. However, once it sold two million copies, the recently announced follow-up became inevitable, developer Radical Entertainment has revealed.

"When Prototype surpassed 2MM units we knew gamers would want a sequel to find out what happens next with Alex Mercer," said Radical Entertainment boss Ken Rosman.

"The team here at Radical is sincerely grateful to the fans and we are laser focused on delivering an even bigger and better experience with Prototype 2!"

Radical's sequel, due for release in 2012, follows Sgt. James Heller as he attempts to destroy the original game's anti-hero Alex Mercer. Take a look at the reveal trailer below for a closer look

The developer also announced that the first game in its superhero franchise is now available on Xbox Live's Games on Demand service, priced £19.99. It'll be hitting PlayStation Network tomorrow too, for the same price.

I am just playing it for the first time (steam sale, 10 euros or so) and absolutely loving it.The movement, the action, the city, the amount of people and cars in the streets..so great. I love just running jumping and massacring everything. Easily up there with Just Cause 2 IMO.

I'm so glad they're making a sequel! I absolutely loved the feeling of power you got in the first game :) Sadly it became very badly balanced at one point when they just threw dozens and dozens of enemies at you making it annoying rather than difficult. I hope Radical learn that's not how to ramp up difficulty!

Pity the first one was almost completely crap.

I quite liked the first one, it was total chaos once the infected took over the city. Some of the traversal stuff was poor though, and it looked like a PS2 game.

    i got bored of the first, although i chalk this down to it being released about 2 weeks after infamous;
hopefully they miss each others releases this time round and can enjoy it

The first game is basically amazing. That's why they need a second.
  • McLovin85 #8 1 year ago

Loved the first game. It's exactly the sort of game you can switch ur brain off and just enjoy the mental action on screen.

Came out same time as Infamous, Infamous was better.
  • sanctusmortis #10 1 year ago

I wanted to love the original, I really did. But, once I unlocked all the powers, opening the power select wheel crashed the game, every time. So, I had to stick with the same choices, for good or bad, for the rest of the game. It was repetitive, bug ridden and not a patch on many far better open world games of around the same time (inFamous, Red Faction Guerilla), and I doubt they've thought this through. Does anyone really expect them to fix it?

Nimbus has it, got about 95 % done and it became silly, masses of spamming enemies at the last hurdle made it silly, could hardly see what was going on...

Infamous was a different game, more shooting / grenading sandbox, prototype was more melee sandbox (OK, you could shoot guns and tanks / helis, but it was focussed on fighting...

Yea, I've pre-ordered Prototype for PS3 and really liked it. Really glad to know a sequel is coming.

And ffs inFamous was frustrating - what kind of superhero can be shot to death by a punk with an SMG? In Prototype when somebody don't behave you just grab him with 100 meter tentacle and EAT. Now that's a superhero.

Also: Prototype has the most entertaining helicopter hijacking I've ever seen in a videogame.

Did it really look that bad on consoles?? I keep hearing that! I thought it looked quite decent on PC. Nothing amazing, but I had no complaints about how it looked :)
  • Paul_cz #14 1 year ago

People that say it looked like PS2 game probably played it on PS3 :p

It looks very good on PC with max details in 1920*1200, it actually surprised me how good does it look considering 60fps and amazing amount of stuff on the screen.
  • MistaGav #15 1 year ago

If you are playing as some sergeant hunting down Alex Mercer then surely there is going to be some epic fight scene between the two?! Two complete badasses beating the shit out of each other and tearing down the city in the process...now THAT's a comic book superhero!
  • Lord_Gremlin #16 1 year ago

@Paul_cz: PS3 version is fine, believe me. Funny: it's even better optimized/looking than inFamous. It even has somewhat better shadows and bump mapping than PC version, at least I failed to turn them on in PC version. That said, PC version has the best draw distance.

@ EVERYBODY - the first was shit but so was infamous. Both looked like a ps2 game and both were a one trick pony.

Got to love people stating their opinion as fact. Not played Prototype (going to get it soon actually), but i really liked infamous... so stick that up your pipe and smoke it.

well its gona be a tough year guys, the vga trailers look amazing for 2011 releases. And i, for one, haven't finished half of the 2010 games yet. Roshier anyone?
  • metallicorphan #19 1 year ago

i started to like the first game but got to hate it pretty quickly
  • sabbede #20 1 year ago

People keep talking about infamous being so superior to Prototype... maybe it was. But you know what? Unless you have a PS3 it matters all of nothing! Me, I play on a PC (best gaming platform ever), so however good infamous was I wouldn't know.
(I did see it on a buddies system and it looked alright for a console)
Did Prototype look like crap on consoles? I have no idea. On my system it looked and played GREAT!

Well, alright, it could have looked better. The buildings were pretty flat and dull texture wise, but the character models/textures were really quite impressive - especially considering how many there were on screen at any given moment.

I usually go for deep, detailed RPG's and other brainy sorts of titles, but Prototype was one of the few action titles that ever really hooked me.
    Can't wait for 2!
  • thedgam #21 1 year ago

Infamous was better in every way, miles better, but this was fun while it lasted.
  • Haerger #22 1 year ago

The first one was extremely frustrating!
  • Haloboy #23 1 year ago

There were times spent playing the first where so much shit was going down at once it made any action movie look tame by comparison. I'd literally be bouncing up and down in my chair out of pure excitement at the carnage I was causing moment to moment, like a kid on christmas morning who just got everything he wished for.

While the PC version did look fantastic in some areas and not others it was all about keeping that insane mechanic going and going. Many seem to forget the large pockets of civilians, vehicles, tanks, helis, splodes, blood and chaotic yet fantastically awesome super powers that would all meld seemlessly for any given scene. It would sometimes look like any one street literally had thousands of civilians all trying to just get away as you traversed them.

Just Cause 2 and Prototype before it set a new bar for action inspired games IMO, both kept me entertained hour on hour after hour. Far beyond what I'd ever imagined they would. I still never understood when anyone slags off either for being too repetetive. Besides if that 30 second repeat ad infinitum action window can make Halo as big as it is today then I don't see why the same thing can't exist for the 3rd person variety. Play either Just Cause 2 or Prototype in smallish concentrated sessions and oodles of fun, chaos, arsenal upgrades and gaming splendour are yours for the taking.

If the original Prototype sold 2 million I can now only hope that the sequel does similar if not far better numbers. The first deserved to sell even when everyone else at the time was screaming 'Infamous ftw!' when both fully deserved a look in. Being Alex Mercer was the most awesome action inspired gaming experience I have ever known and it was more than just about throwing cars at tanks and cutting helis in two. It was about being put in a situation completely out of your own control and how you would then deal with it. The sequel is going to follow the same path it seems, and I for one cannot fucking wait to fill those self indulgent boots of anarchy once more.

The game was very good, but lost its balancing at the end. More focussed battles like this = win.

Infamous was very good, finished it, also manick fighting for sandbox
  • apoc_reg #25 1 year ago

Being crap doesnt justify it though....
  • stegabba #26 1 year ago

i completed prototype, i never completed infamous because it was too boring
