PS Phone images "definitely fake"

UPDATE: Sony comment retracted.

Update: NowGamer, the website responsible for the original report, has pulled the Sony-attributed comment stating that the pictures were "definitely fake".

The website now tows the standard line Eurogamer heard earlier today: that Sony doesn't comment on "rumour and speculation".

Original story: Sony Europe has declared that the PlayStation phone images that appeared on the internet overnight are "definitely fake".

A spokesperson dismissed the evidence when presented it by NowGamer.

Strangely, however, Sony Europe told Eurogamer that it couldn't comment on "rumour and speculation". We're attempting to clarify.

Sony Ericsson, in turn, refused to comment on "rumour and speculation".

Ericsson has wanted to incorporate the PlayStation brand into mobile phone handsets for a while - much like the company did with other Sony technologies Walkman and Cyber-shot. Sony, however, held back PlayStation from Ericsson, deeming the mobile manufacturer's output of a quality level not yet satisfactory for the valuable gaming brand.

So that's to be confirmed next week, right?
  • el_pollo_diablo #2 1 year ago

I hope they're fake. They did nothing for me.
  • sfp_noodle #3 1 year ago

It wasn't a joint statement. They just confirmed its real then. Whenever someone refuses to respond to rumour and speculation, you know shit just got real.

Apologies for the repost from the other thread, but

That site got an official No Comment from the people making it, and a slightly out of character comment from a 'spokesperson' at an affiliated company which may or may not have been involved in its development.

The images are quite convincing to me that they are a real device. If they're fake, then somebody has built this thing, and that seems an awful lot of effort to go to, translucent jelly face buttons, slide mechanism, convincingly SE styled fascia and all. If it is real, and there are pictures of it, it must have been leaked, and if's been leaked it's likely to have been carried out of the office in someone's pocket, whereupon it would have got all linty.

It's possible that this is a product that Sony Ericsson are pressing ahead with developing this in the hope that it will prove to be good enough for SCE (in Japan, not Europe) to approve it.

Deal with Ericcson? It's a joint venture. They part-own Ericsson!
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #6 1 year ago

Why do they deal with Ericcson at all if they consider them so shit?

There have been rumours of them pulling out of the partnership altogether in the past, but it seems a lot has changed with the success of the X10 as a flagship Android device in Japan.

And also, Sony have very publicly jumped into bed with Google to put their TV version of Android into tellies.

It could just be a prototype. Companies make protos of items all the time. They might just be denying it as it might be at a stage where there not sure it will even see the light of day.............Or it could just be complete bull, whichever you prefer the sound of.

NowGamer have just completely reworded their story, so everyone should be under no illusion that they just make shit up for hits, people have always suspected it, but now they've confirmed it themselves. Shame Eurogamer got caught up in their bullshit and contributed to their hits.

Basically site like nowgamer are the reason games journalism has zero reputation

It would make a lot of sense to produce a PSP phone, especially one running android. Better yet would be to consider cosying up to Google and making a PSN / PSP gaming platform for android that any manufacturer, not just Sony can licence and pack into their devices. Set some minimum specifications for performance, controls, security requirements etc. and throw open PSN to all comers who meet those requirements.

It's something that would benefit Sony and Google and other manufacturers. A single gaming infrastructure and quality programme is something which is conspicuously absent from the Android and it would benefit the platform enormously to have one especially since Microsoft and Apple are rolling out their own.

Its not strange at all for sony to 'not comment on rumour or speculation' - Its a blanket statement they use for everything, that has come true or false.

Picture 10 in the previous article proves it's fake.

A to continue and B for back when below it you've got the normal X, O triangle and square.

That just proves the software isn't finished, which is unsurprising.

If it was faked, they'd surely just use a standard Android screenshot - that isn't one.

    one word: PROTOTYPE.

How else would Sony be able to say that SE's hardware isn't meeting their standards, unless SE had produced hardware (in prototype) and Sony didn't like it?

    It's a prototype.

Yup, sounds like NowGamer got the 'no comment' line and ran it as 'definitely fake' until they were caught out by Sony. You can't trust the smaller games sites and you can't trust the bigger ones...
