UK chart: Fallout: New Vegas wins big

Vanquish, DJ Hero 2, MMA miss top 10.

Bethesda's new Fallout game has entered the UK all-formats chart at number one.

A considerable 60 per cent of New Vegas' sales were made on Xbox 360, with 30 per cent attributed to PS3 and 10 per cent to PC.

Fallout: New Vegas' arrival meant last week's leader, Medal of Honor, was pushed to second.

FIFA 11 dipped to third ahead of another newcomer, Professor Layton and the Lost Future on DS.

Eurogamer's Game of the Week Vanquish failed to make the top 10 and entered in 12th. EA Sports MMA and DJ Hero 2 faired worse, and spent their first weeks at 23rd and 25th respectively.

From fifth to 10th, the chart went Just Dance 2, Wii Party, Wii Sports Resort, F1 2010, PES 2011 and Dead Rising 2.

    I bought New Vegas myself but I'm a little upset to see Vanquish didn't do much better
  • LHH #2 2 years ago

    @TheDellBingo

    Well with Virtual DJ free editon going and maybe a little extra cash, one of the hardware controllers you can basically DJ for real. Especially with the sync function...

    As for Fallout, I want but will wait until some patches have been released - the feedback across various forums makes it sound somewhat buggy, especially the PC version (which is the one I want)
  • chrisjm #3 2 years ago

    I reakon dj hero could be a steadyer longer term seller due to price that should do well over christmas? it deserves to, its brilliant.
  • rivuzu #4 2 years ago

    I can imagine Mr Average Joe's thoughts when it comes to Vanquish.
    "So... it's like Gears... but without multiplayer? Why do I want this £40 singleplayer only experience?"

    To which I would turn around and break their face for saying. It's beautiful.
  • darkmorgado #5 2 years ago

    New Vegas is, bugs aside, one of the best games this year for me. The quality of the writing alone is light years ahead of Fallout 3 and has produced a lot of genuine lols.

    2 patches out for New Vegas now, last one was yesterday. Although I am now doubting myself, no news of a 2nd patch - I did clear my hdd system cache due to really long load times between maps would that have prompted a download of the first patch again?!?

    Edit: Located and activated Fisto last night, that was surreal.

    Sad for vanquish...pleased it'll only cost £17 in a couple of weeks though :)
  • Vortex808 #8 2 years ago

    Shame Vanquish hasn't done too well. It's a truly great game folks, please buy it!
  • darkmorgado #9 2 years ago

    @telboy007

    If you have sex with Fisto before you order him to go to Atomic Wrangler, and you have Wild Wasteland active, on your way out the building you will be ambushed by a load of grannies with rolling pins who attack you for being a "ponce".
  • karooo #10 2 years ago

    I haven't had many crashes so far, level 17 now and loving every bit of it. Beautiful game.
  • beastmaster #11 2 years ago

    Bayonetta didn't do that well over the UK either, from what I remember.

    But Platinum seem to sell enough games worldwide. Enough for them to continue making stunning games. Which is good news for everyone.
  • Progguitarist #12 2 years ago

    More people bought Medal of Shite than Vanquish.

    /sad panda
  • Darren #13 2 years ago

    @MrMarc - I was planning on buying Vanquish later on as I'm playing through too many games at the moment but I saw it at ShopTo.net for £27.85 so I couldn't resist. So I bought the PS3 version (for the non-tearing) but my purchase won't count toward the chart until next week.

    When I originally downloaded the Vanquish demo, it wouldn't install so I just got around to downloading and playing it at the weekend. Have to admit, it's the most I've enjoyed a game in ages. I'll be picking this up after Christmas. There's just too many games to buy :(
  • RobTheBuilder #18 2 years ago

    I'll be picking up Vaniquish once it goes down a bit in price, just too many games I want to afford buying them all at £40.
  • modo_komodo #19 2 years ago

    EG's game of the week is Vanquish and there is a PM in my inbox telling me to buy Vanquish. It's almost like you are taking money for them to be your game of the week or something.

  • HistoryTeller #20 2 years ago

    Puzzling that so few buy Fallout for PC. Would think it a no brainer purchase for PC.
  • darkmorgado #21 2 years ago

    @modo_komodo

    Same thing happened with Enslaved.
  • darkmorgado #22 2 years ago

    HistoryTeller

    Digital sales aren't counted - so all those people that bought it on steam don't figure into these stats.
  • bodypopper #23 2 years ago

    Vanquish's weak showing and Enslaved falling from 11 to 31 (ouch) shows how hard it is to launch a new IP at this time of year, especially when funds are tight for many.
  • Haerger #24 2 years ago

    'A considerable 60 per cent of New Vegas' sales were made on Xbox 360, with 30 per cent attributed to PS3 and 10 per cent to PC. '

    Exclusive DLC helps then. I bought Xbox 360 version cos of two reasons - DLC and no jaggies.
  • slippysloppy #25 2 years ago

    I loved DJ Hero but something doesn't inspire me to buy the sequel, maybe because it feels more of the same. To be fair I felt the same about Rock Band 2 until I played it at a friend's house. I think those games are peripheral driven and there seems to be no advancement in that area.

    As for New Vegas, even after the patch I've experienced some very annoying bugs. The worst of these was invisible enemies, shooting at me from no where and having to use my reticle colour change to identify them. If I used VATS it would lock the game up and the only way past it was to get lucky and kill the invisible enemies, at which point they'd appear as a dead body.
  • miiiguel #26 2 years ago

    I bought 2 Vanquishes, one in UK one in Portugal. It's that good. And crazy hard challenges. Horde mode for the hardcore.
  • des #27 2 years ago

    Encountered the same bug before the patches. Really damn annoying one.
  • menage #30 2 years ago

    Sad for Vanquish, but it's really Sega's fault for releasing it in the middle of the biggest gamesmonth of the year. Sega really needs to fire some people in their planning dep. Everybody knew it was going to have a small audience. At least release stuff like this in mid summer and people will lap it up due to lack of games alone.

    But putting it against MOH, Fallout, Fable 3, Castlevania, DR2, Enslaved etc.

    Yeah, Everybody loses.

    SEGA have not advertised Vanquish at all. I know they got burnt on Bayonetta but how you expect people to buy a game they know nothing about.

    I got DJ Hero 2 on friday as I am expecting Vanquish and EA MMA to drop pretty soon. EA have let EA MMA bomb, not seen one advert on sky sports!

    Ouch! Poor DJ Hero 2...
  • Power_n_Glory #34 2 years ago

    Knew nothing about Vanquish. Sega will never learn. Lack of promotion is what killed the Dreamcast.

    Too much games to play at the moment. Haven't even completed the first Fallout game. I'll buy New Vegas when the price drops in Spring. I need to throw that Fifa 11 away. It's eating up my gaming time and it's not even that good.
  • youhavenomail #35 2 years ago

    I agree with others, Sega will never succeed with games like Vanquish when buggers like me know they'll cave in and sell it for £17.99 within a fortnight.
  • kosigan #36 2 years ago

    From the article: "EA Sports MMA and DJ Hero 2 faired worse" - "faired" should be "fared" in this context. A better proofreader would seem to be needed.

    Bought FO:NV for the PC but the bugs are getting on my tits - gun disapearing while jumping, gun and arm keep falling down from the top of the screen after standing still, Pip boy disappearing, etc.

    I've stopping playing it until these are fixed, it was wrecking the immersion IMO.
  • Lunastra78 #39 2 years ago

    I want no re run of the "radscorpion freeze rage" of 2008 so I'll be waiting for some more patches before I venture into New Vegas.

    Puzzling that so few buy Fallout for PC. Would think it a no brainer purchase for PC.

    Does this chart take into account digital sales? If not then that explains it a bit.

    Also like to add that i haven't experienced any noticable bugs. Except a couple of times i saw an NPC misplacing their objects, like a gun appearing inside your companions arm until you moved to a new area. Those bugs were in F3 too though. Of course there are other bugs but the game is so huge and so many different variables are involved that an average player will probably experience only a few of them at most during an average playthrough.

    Playing NV on PC with 360 controller, hooked up to my TV at 1900 x 1080 with everything on ultra high, 8 x AA.

    Pretty crazy PC is only 10% of the sales, it's by far the best version and doesn't even require a high spec machine. I swear there must be thousands of people unaware PCs can be used to play games.

    @xentar

    It is like EA saw UFC 2010 Sales and thought we are not gonna bother promoting this game as that struggled and THQ have the biggest MMA brand in the West. Problem EA has is that UFC fans tend to just follow UFC, they are ignorant of the world of MMA and do not bother watching any other promotions. EA had one UFC fighter in Randy Coture but they never used him at all to try and push the game!

    It will take huge marketing by EA to get this new brand doing some decent numbers. I am worried they may give up on MMA if it bombs in Europe and the US.
  • kinky_mong #50 2 years ago

    Ahh good DJ Hero 2 has failed to set the charts alight. Hopefully that means if a third one does get made they won't try and pander to the great unwashed's music tastes with pop and R'n'B like they have with number 2, and we will get a credible tracklisting that a turntablism game deserves.
  • Byblos1 #51 2 years ago

    @menage

    Neither do I, really, my PC is 3 years old. But for a game with such epic scope I think it does matter. Im a console gamer mostly, but the difference is huge in NV. Framerate is way smoother too, and I think that does matter a bit.
  • xentar #52 2 years ago

    @kobashi - it may be that EA didnt market the game in Europe at all as MMA is still US sports in their minds unfortunately (maybe they will do well in Japan?)...

    As for the UFC fans.. I would say that Europeans tend to have greater knowledge of the competing promotions because UFC is not present on European TV stations much. From the last year I remember only a short bio of Rapage Jackson on Eurosport, otherwise its all K-1

    "I can imagine Mr Average Joe's thoughts when it comes to Vanquish.

    I think it's more like "Hmm, if I wait a few months I'll be able to pick that up for 20 quid just like Bayonetta by which time I will have finished Fallout"
  • PlugMonkey #54 2 years ago

    @TonyCorleone:
    The truth is that most consumers aren't as educated as the people who post on specialist gamer site forums. They probably haven't heard about Vanquish, and they probably haven't heard about the issues with NV.

    The flaw with your business plan (as well you know) is that people are buying NV because they had a good experience with FO3, and if they have a shitty experience with NV they are less likely to buy FO4. It takes time, but this is how all big franchises can ultimately be brought to their knees, be that Medal of Honor or Need for Speed or Tony Hawk. The great unwashed masses may not read about this stuff so much ahead of time, but they're not stupid. Give them a shitty experience, and they will stop coming back.

    What this highlights is that if you have an interesting new game, and you don't have a marketing budget with a hell of a lot of zeroes a the end of it, releasing in later October is fucking moronic. It's strange that the only people who don't seem to know this are video game publishers. Someone really should tell them.

    It's interesting to see DJ Hero tanking, and it will be doubly interesting to see how RB3 does in a week. Is the music genre dead, or has Rock Band simply won?
  • gillri #55 2 years ago

    yes Im getting to the point where im picking up the PC version of these kinda of games, not even xbox live achievement, friends can compete with the increased graphics on a PC version
    but im using a controller for sure, I find KB/M very floaty and lacks the feeling of weight and inertia you get form controllers

    sad to see vanquish not make the opt 10 even when prices are below £30, I will pick up NV when the patches are lreased
  • kobashi #56 2 years ago

    @xentar

    Yeah you maybe right about EA not caring about european promotion!

    EA have got more ammo in Japan then THQ did with UFC as they have Japanese fighters in the game. EA too Randy off the front cover in Japan and replaced him with Yoshida. Nobody in Japan really gives a damn about UFC to be honest!

    I dont think it will do great numbers though as the MMA buzz has died in japan so it will be a hard sell. I do hope it does well as by all accounts EA has a good base with this game so a follow up could be really great.
  • subedii #57 2 years ago

    @Byblos1:

    This bears repeating, but Chart-Track only deal with retail, not Digital Distribution. Which is kind of important if you're going to make any accurate tally of PC sales. Heck, even the NPD admitted that their PC sales stats were pretty meaningless largely because they couldn't track Digital Distribution, and they believed that DD had actually surpassed brick-and-mortar retail for PC games sales.

    This is particularly important to consider when people start going talking about how the PC version didn't have pre-order DLC. The PC version did have pre-order DLC, at least on Steam, and I'm guessing other DD vendors as well.
  • Rack #58 2 years ago

    Hopefully Obsidian can afford some QA staff with the Fallout money.
  • Shikasama #59 2 years ago

    TonyCorleone - I'm not a fool, I bought Fallout NV and I have yet to experience any bugs beyond my Pipboy being abit lower sometimes.

    So fuck off.
  • Darren #60 2 years ago

    @gillri

    +1 for playing Fallout NV on the PC with a controller. Personally, I prefer it plus you get the vibration feedback. Unlike others, I've been playing it for about a dozen hours and haven't encountered any serious bugs other than a dog with its eyes hanging out (more unnerving that the mutants really!) and an NPC in the mid-distance suddently disappearing from sight. The game has not crashed either. With these sort of games though it really is blind-luck whether the game will run OK for you or not because no two people will ever play it the same way.

    I'm enjoying it, it is a good game, but it is far too similar to the last one IMO. I've seen very little that is actually new and overall it feels more like an expansion than a proper sequel. Considering it is two years since the last game it is a little disappointing that it lacks a real identity of its own.

    Vanquish best action game so-far...GoW, GOW, Bayonneta, Ninja Gaiden action fans - do yourself a favor - GET IT!
  • darkphoenix #62 2 years ago

    Sorry, Vanquish.
    I only have one life, after finishing "Halo Reach" and "GTA: TBOGT", I dwelved into "Red Dead Redemption" yesterday.
    Toooooo many great games coming out at the same time. Backlog is absolutely unbearable.

    Glad to hear "Fallout NV" is bug-infested, makes me less anxious to buy/play it soon.

    I will get to "Vanquish" later, don't know when exactly though...
  • Feanor #63 2 years ago

    12th isn't that bad, so don't knock the UK. I doubt Vanquish will make the top 10 for October in America.
  • JayKwon #64 2 years ago

    I just try to stop buying massive supported releases for the most part and support new IP's and innovative releases instead.

    Last year it was Batman, Borderlands and Brütal Legend. And the year before that it was Mirror's Edge, Dead Space and sorry Fable 2 and Gears of War 2.

    Between these periods I try to buy new underated original Ip's as well and I'm buying lots of indie games as well.

    Now it will be Enslaved, Vanquish and sorry, I bough Halo Reach. I wanted to buy Fable 3 instead of Reach, but my friends pushed me into buying Reach. Enjoyed Enslaved though, I hope they can afford a better sequel. Today I'm buying Vanquish, I'm not waiting for a price drop, I want to support this developer. I want to see more new Ip's, I want to see creative ideas and I'm willing to pay for that.

    Although I know Vanquish doesn't have to sell as much as the next COD because of a different budget, It saddens me it doesn't. I just hope they're being profitable at least. Maybe people really want more CoD/MoH type of shooters, or maybe Sega has to advertise more? Or maybe a combination of both?

  • Power_n_Glory #68 2 years ago

    Vanquish is another shooter so it’s not totally different. It’s already set itself up for a tough ride because it’s going up against established games that set the standard. I’m all for brand new IP’s and I’ve been waiting for more original ideas from developers or some variety at least.

    Was happy to see Red Dead Redemption, not totally original but we’ve been waiting for a true Western game for ages. Still can’t believe we haven’t had next gen style Street of Rage or Double Dragon. Some variety is needed but developers are playing it safe and some genres just haven’t been touched at all.
  • Daeltaja #69 2 years ago

    Just past the 20 hour mark for New Vegas, cracking game so far, the writing and voice overs are practically the best I've seen in an RPG, tho visually the engine is being really strained. For the best part it looks great, just the occasional ugly. Not had a single crash/glitch/flying mutant yet, I think a dog standing on a fence is the only thing that's been outta place. Playing on a newish HDD though if that makes a difference. Seems you either get loads of bugs or none at all.

    Want Vanquish but not prepared to part with €50 for a 5 hour game. Will wait for a 22.99 price tag in HMV in 2 weeks.
  • StolenGlory #70 2 years ago

    This what I do too, although I drop down through a hole in the floor from the bedroom above (and I use a 360 controller instead of a mouse). Add a USB hub on a long cable and you can plug in wireless receivers (so you don't have to worry about operational range), speakers, the usual USB sticks etc.

    Do this, add XBMC, and you have nearly all the benefits of a console, none of the disadvantages, and the best home media setup you can get to boot :)

    I used to have two separate computers but this is a much better arrangement.

    "Sigh. I knew all the talk about the PC still going strong was wishful thinking."

    Rumours of it's death are greatly exaggerated. The charts don't track digital sales, and I can't remember the last time I bought a PC game on a disc. How quaintly 20th century!

    The best they can do is estimate that digital sales now exceed hard copy sales, which would bring the PC close to in line with the PS3 at the very least. Personally, I suspect that digital PC game sales now completely dwarf disc sales.

    Discs really are just pointless clutter.
  • Murton #74 2 years ago

    Rack: "Hopefully Obsidian can afford some QA staff with the Fallout money."

    Doesn't matter how many QA staffers you have on a project if the devs simply ignore them.

    So in correction I'd probably say, "hopefully Bethesda will retire the ancient Gamebryo engine and invest the Fallout money in something that doesn't look and run like a bag of shit"
