Splinter Cell/POP HD Collections likely

More retailer listings for HD trilogies appear.

The release of high definition Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia trilogies looks increasingly likely following the appearance of a new set of retailer listings on the internet.

Zavvi lists both HD Collections on its site: the Splinter Cell Trilogy and the Prince of Persia Trilogy, with an RRP of 30 quid. Both games are available to pre-order.

Zavvi has the Splinter Cell Trilogy down for release on 26th November 2010, and the Prince of Persia Trilogy slated for a 11th March 2011 launch. Both games are only listed for the PlayStation 3.

The news follows the appearance of both games on the French version of Amazon last month.

The first three Splinter Cell games were 2002's Splinter Cell; 2004's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow; and 2005's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

The Prince of Persia trilogy may refer to the Sands of Time Trilogy, which featured PlayStation 2 games released between 2003 and 2005.

Sources told Eurogamer that publisher Ubisoft "may be launching" what are described as "collections skus" in 2010 - in the same way Sony released the God of War Collection earlier this year - although our sources are yet to hear official word.

A spokesperson for Ubisoft refused to comment.

    PS2 PoP in HD? WANT!!!

Well at least 1 & 3; the angsty one was a bit odd.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #2 2 years ago

Release this on the 360 as well you bastards!
  • bushwod #3 2 years ago

I might finally get to play the first Prince of Persia game, cool!

Obviously it's hard for companies to ignore the business that the GOW re-releases did. Hard for me to imagine that Ubisoft would ignore MS on this one though. It's basically a license to print money.
  • Shoz_2008 #6 2 years ago

Love to see both games in HD that'll be ace.

How can the MK originals be HD? When it was shot it wasn't HD (the character moves) so it'll likely be blown up to HD resolution (probably 1280x720?) and sharpened slightly.

Still probably day 1 purchase for me lol
  • CaptainQuint #8 2 years ago

Surely it's only a matter of time before Microsoft jump on the bandwagon and release Halo:CE HD.

Pretty please with sugar on top.
  • Machetazo #9 2 years ago

POP trilogy, in HD could well equal a mega-win! In related, I'd really like whoever is distributing MK HD to announce and confirm they actually are. (It's worryingly sweet of a rumour atm, all the classics available together in HD). Then, I'll be able to just sit back and basically, count the days :D
  • ZizouFC #10 2 years ago

Im excited for these.... but why can't we have ICO and Shadow Of The Colossus this year as well!?

    Resi 4 Move edition!!!

Edit: Could storage be an issue for the no show on 360? These games were all released on DVD's back in the day, maybe its too much effort to squeeze em onto a 360 DVD?

I like this trend. Especially as I missed Prince of Persia first time around. That and the recent Splinter Cell's have been disappointing, the first three were ace (and the original Xbox version of Double Agent too).

    Roll on MGS Collection!

CaptainQuint: "Surely it's only a matter of time before Microsoft jump on the bandwagon and release Halo:CE HD.

I'm surprised they haven't jumped this bandwagon yet. I'd get Halo 1 & 2 HD.
  • menage #14 2 years ago

Good stuff. Don't really care for these though (PoP was nice but I'm not as big a fan as most) But there's bound to be some cool stuff in the future.

Capcom, how about a Okami/Viewtiful combo, you did it in th new MVC trailer! You made me want that!

I'm still not convinced this trend of re-releasing last generation games in HD is a good thing overall. Obviously it's nice for underrated/rare classics to be given another shot at glory, but when you start giving every bloody blockbuster franchise an hd makeover, all that happens is both generations get cheapened somehow. I just feel that we're getting to the stage now where we're starting to forget, even belittle, just how great last generation was, applying the thinking that only this generation's consoles are capable of giving us the 'true experience', which is inevitably what these collections are subtly claiming.
It's a strange case, and I dint think I'm getting my point across well, I just think that we're chipping away at the towering achievements of the last generation's true classics, like polishing a trophy cabinet when really, if you stand back and look at it, it's still shiningjust as bright as it ever was...
  • Davinnicus #17 2 years ago

Have just finished the PoP trilogy on the PS2, managed to get my hands on the collection. Now this is announced, hmmm, is it worth playing them again in HD........

    HELL YES :)
  • schnide #18 2 years ago

Wasn't one of our fellow comment givers demanding this very thing the other day? If so, lucky you!
  • sfp_noodle #19 2 years ago

Kojima would be a massive fool to not release the MGS collection in HD now. I know he released a similar bundle on the PS2 in Japan and US a few years ago, but a true HD collection would be excellent. I still own Substance and Subsistence but to replay them with crisper visuals and added trophies would be a dream. Please Kojima do it.

It'd be the icing on the cake if it was released alongside MGS Rising. Would most likely increase sales figures in the PS3's favour too.
  • cianchristopher #20 2 years ago

    Very cool!

I'm looking forward to playing future editions of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and MGS4 on the next generation of home consoles, at true 1080p HD.
  • IronGiant #21 2 years ago

A HD remake of Resi 4 with move support would be awesome! As for these re-releases somehow tarnishing their memory, utter tosh. In fact the majority of people that will buy these are those of us who played them back on the old hardware. Cannot wait for Strangers Wrath :)
  • geordiek #22 2 years ago

An HD remake of killzone with all it's faults fixed would please me and Okami anyone?
  • jimboton #23 2 years ago

is it bad to point out we could already play PoP in HD?

    Why no 360 versions :(
  • potatoes #25 2 years ago

On the contrary JoeGBallad I was always pleased to see companies like Valve keeping their games up to date and relevant.

Its a problem that movies and books don't have - the idea that a creation will become unplayable because the platforms move on.

If they are good games, which I think the Splinter Cell and PoP series were, why not bring them up to date rather than releasing rehashes of the same thing simply because the older versions arent available for the popular platforms any more?

You wouldnt rewrite a whole book just because you need an e-reader version (even if that is a rubbish analogy!)
  • Raznilof #26 2 years ago

@potatoes - please try and explain that to the people who sanction movie remake after movie remake ; )
  • Shinetop #27 2 years ago

Cool, I can't wait to play Prince of Persia, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow & The Flame and Prince of Persia 3D in HD.
  • JoeGBallad #28 2 years ago

Haha looks like I'm getting unpopular. I don't think I explained myself right.totally agree with the point that it's not a problem faced by films or books, to a degree. Ido hate the temporary nature of games. I suppose not everyone has all their old consoles under their telly like I do(much to the annoyance of my girlfriend, unti she fancies a shot of kingdom hearts or zelda oot!)
  • VandelayIndustries #29 2 years ago

    "Why no 360 versions :( "

Presumably because three game sets won't fit on a DVD, and multi disc sets cost more.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #30 2 years ago

Sands of Time fit on a gamecube disc (1.5gb) and the PC version is in fact not taking more space either. With today's compression it should not be a problem to fit the games on one 360 disc.
  • Darren #31 2 years ago

The early Splinter Cell games were pretty rubbish on the PS2 and GameCube compared with the Xbox versions so I doubt that rendering them at HD resolutions will do them any favours. So no thanks to those. The PoP games though would be nice to have though. The first was great, the second far less so but I never got to play the third.

Ubi, sign me up for some HD Fisher. Just waiting for some MGS, come on Kojima you sly fox. Would this be a part of Microsoft's strategy, they could get 343 to do a HD of the first 2 Halo games (wasn't there some expansion too because I believe I saw a triple pack on the original xbox once).
  • Entity #33 2 years ago

I'll be snapping up SC straightaway. I wish they'd also do a remake of Spy vs Merc and online co-op for CT.
  • BAM! #34 2 years ago

For those asking why no 360 version, I understand that this recent spate of HD remakes has come about because Sony have released developer tools that take much of the pain out of porting PS2 games to the PS3. Similar tools do not currently exist on the 360.
  • Monkeyspoon #35 2 years ago

Hopefully its true and stays PS3 exclusive.
  • Soton4084 #36 2 years ago

I'm looking forward to the Splinter Cell trilogy in particular. The first three were fantastic, but I felt the series lost it's way with Double Agent. They're listed on HMV.com at £27.99, which gives a rough indication of pricing. Seems very reasonable for three brilliant games in one package.

I wonder if these updates will have trophy support and online multiplayer?
  • Xephon1970 #37 2 years ago

Sands of Time - stone cold classic.
    Warrior Within- not so much.
Two Thrones - best of the last two games.

I adore SOT in much the same way as SOTC, it's that good...to me anyway, even with the combat niggles. It'd be just in time for my birthday too, sweet!
  • plaztiksyke #38 2 years ago

I hope they use the original, uncompressed texture, video, and audio assets. Seeing these play in 1080p (with MSAA) @ 30fps will be awesome, but only if the assets are re-authored for HD. MP3 audio, stretched SD video, and 64x64 textures won't cut it on large TVs. losslessly-compressed audio, re-encodes of the video using AVC, and (at least) the textures from the Xbox/PC versions are the bare minimum here. Anything less is pure laziness.

If they get the original voice actor to re-record the Prince's dialogue in Warrior Within, that would be a HUGE bonus. It would also be cool if they include some HD interviews/commentaries from the designers/producers now that it's been 10 years since the production on Sands of Time began.

Think they'll include the original PoP 1 & 2 on the disc as unlockables?
  • trubadman #39 2 years ago

Splinter cell was my second favourite series on the PS2 after GTA!!
  • BraveArse #40 2 years ago

@Soton4084 multiplayer SC would make it day one for me. I think the story in conviction was great but was really disappointed that they dropped the Spy V Merc gameplay for the multiplayer. Fun as the Conviction coop stuff is. It doesn't match up to the previous versions IMO.
  • bluetoothion #41 2 years ago

I think thing needs to stop.. its one thing to make some games justice as ICO n Shadow of the Colossus that PS2 Struggled and Struggled to give this unique yet crippled result....and another thing is to release every adventure action again all over again for them to get the resourses to produce a True Blah Blah Gen blah blah game around the end of this life cycle....
some games deserve it but making a trend out of it aint gonna do gamers much good i tell ya.

on the other hand it would be great for new gamers that have missed some of the past games to see what is the fuss about those games before purchasing the X game No 8 which is a prequel to the previous sequel to the game only released in another platform ( Devs do fuck it up sometimes )
  • Kaminari #42 2 years ago

Chances are, the HD versions of PoP won't be based on the PS2 originals but on the PC versions. Which makes sense, considering the trilogy was cross-platform.
  • Mca90 #43 2 years ago

Halo 1 and 2 already are HD. When you play the Xbox game on Xbox 360 its HD. Microsoft told that. The two Trilogies have to be relaesed on Xbox 360 too. I need those 6000 gamerscore points. My favourite is Prince of Persia Sands of Time. The story of that game is just magic. The other Prince of Persia games weren't that exciting.
  • james-mw3-mw3 #44 10 months ago

Infinity Ward decided that MW3 will immediately follow the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Every country is under attack, the press won't like Call of Duty: MW3 direction. Hopefully the new Modern Warfare 3 weapons, perks and killstreaks will make up for it!
