Star Review: Bomberman Generation (Cube)

by DDevil

Lets get one thing straight right away, Bomberman is one of the most addictive multiplayer games ever when played in its standard "last man standing" mode. However, single-player Bomberman has never been much good; with that spark of greatness missing it becomes flat, boring and generally uninspiring. So Hudson have come up with a brand new single-player mode. It's no longer Bomberman running around in themed mazes blowing up bad guys - it's now Bomberman running around themed areas, err, blowing up bad guys.

Ah, problem. You see, they may have sugar-coated the single-player with nice cel-shaded graphics, some open areas, mini-games and little puzzles to solve, but dig underneath and you're still a funny looking man in a white suit dropping bombs in a maze to blow up dumb bad guys. The raising of little creatures called "Charabombs" helps a little and adds a tiny bit of strategy, but it's all still been seen before. I suppose if you're a big fan of the series that's not a bad thing and you could definitely see this as an improvement, but for me it just leaves me empty.

On the other hand the multiplayer is still top class and with four people is as still as fun as it ever was. They've added some strange multiplayer modes as they usually do (including a odd Reversi style game), but sticking to vanilla Bomberman multiplayer is where the real fun is to be had. Get some mates round, get the beers in (or the fizzy pop if you're a young 'un) and have a literal blast!

So if you want a decent party game, buy it (second hand or as cheaply as possible) as Bomberman is always good for a laugh. But please, if you're the loner type, don't expect too much in the way of fun.
