Why the games media has a diversity problem - this website especially

superfurry

“We do this not to try to put this issue to bed, but to keep it open, even if it doesn't reflect well on us. This isn't the end of the conversation, or of our efforts to reflect a broader and more inclusive gaming community. It's the start. - Oli Welsh“

The start of what? You could at least lay out how you intend to address the issue.

Forgive me for being cynical but this seems like a bit of a cop out. The issue was raised and instead of addressing it an announcing concrete plans to address it, you farm out a think piece to someone from outside the organisation that tells us what we already know.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance review - history is a double-edged sword

superfurry

@SleazyNinja might be trying to be sarcastic when he points out that there's an imbalance on the Eurogamer staff but there's a real point there. Of the 21 full-time staff listed there, 20 identify as male and there's just one woman, while as far as I can see, everyone is Caucasian.

White, pale, male and stale. Do better Eurogamer.

As someone vehemently anti-Gamergate and more than nominally left wing, I honestly feel there's a level of disingenuous to this review. Not least for attacking a developer for wearing a band t-shirt, which he has addressed in the past and which he admitted was 'stupid'.

It all smacks of Anglo cultural imperialism whereby you have all these privileged English and American people telling people from Europe that the art they're creating can't reflect their experiences or the history of their country and instead needs to suit the cultural outlook of England and America.

@seanlowther Which is absolutely fine if that's going to be the standard for Eurogamer going forward. If they're going to hold Japanese developed games to the same standard and criticise them for not having enough representation of minorities, then fair enough.

But this just smacks of going after a European developed game because there's a minor spat on social media between the usual suspects.
42 0

superfurry

Two things that I don't think are linked at all.

1) This is a very poor review which picks on race to attempt to make some really half-baked points about representation.

2) Gamergate was a scumbag movement, founded on lies, that was responsible for the targeting and harassment of women and minorities in games.

@CrashOkami "can you really say what GamerGate started as was wrong?"

Absolutely because when you say "I remember the whole fuss being about Zoe sleeping with a Kotaku editor who just happened to give a glowing review for her game, without disclosing their relationship in the review at all." you're wrong.

Kotaku never, ever reviewed Depression Quest.

@The_shlaaaag_returns Same with Japanese games. If there are black people represented in their games, they're usually poorly developed caricatures or out and out stereotypes.

Oddly enough though I can't seem to remember Eurogamer ever review the likes of Yakuza on this basis.
35 3

superfurry

Conflating a poorly written review like this with the absolute shitshow that was and still is Gamergate is a big mistake.
33 9

superfurry

Honestly I think it's fair enough to review a game however the reviewer sees fit and if they want to judge games on the number of non-white people featured, that's their prerogative. But there has to be consistency.

Will every Eurogamer review going forward now have an inclusivity section? Or is it just a factor in this particular game because there's been a minor social media kerfuffle.

Will Ni Ni Kuni 2 be reviewed based on the number of black character it has? How about Yakuza 6? There are black people living in Japan at this very moment! Will the game be criticised if they're not represented?

How about Shenmue 3? In the past that series has painted black people as cartoonish characters. Will there be hundreds of words devoted to how Shenmue 3 deals with race?

Because heaven forbid you guys pick and choose and don't judge Japanese developed games by the same standard you seem to be judging European ones.

superfurry

@LightlySalted I'm not sure that any of those comparisons hold up really.

Blurays and DVDs are really just the secondary means of delivery rather than the products themselves - the film. The main revenue stream for the big budget AAA+ titles of that medium is the cinema and cinema ticket prices have doubled since 1993 - in step with inflation.

In real terms, games have gone the other way and cost half of what they did in real terms back then while they unarguably cost more to make.
2 7

superfurry

@Whitster I really don't think the growth in audience outweighs the growth in development staff required or time needed to make a game now. Five people made The Legend of Zelda, six people made Super Mario Bros and they were the AAA+ games of their time.

The credits on something like Assassin's Creed Origins will be north or 1,000 people.
2 1

superfurry

Would people be happy to pay €120/£100 for vanilla version of a AAA+ single-player focused game without loot-boxes, DLC or additional monetisation? Everything that's ever going to be in the game is there and available for that price, but that's now the standard price of games.
1 7

superfurry

"The problem is that we've scaled up our budgets to $100m+"

And therein lies the problem. They're not willing to gamble that enough people are going to buy a AAA+ €60 single-player game to make developing those games worthwhile now.

Game prices have never been cheaper in real terms. I rememeber paying 90 Irish Pounds for Street Fighter II Turbo in 1993. In today's money and taking inflation into account that's €180.

The prices of games haven't gone up in 25 years, the development prices have sky-rocketed and companies are looking at other ways to fund them than the till price.
