@darkmorgado Doesn't mean Sony aren't willing or risk-less enough to invest in new IP. They have proven it before with other projects. What Vita needs now is a price cut in the west.

@cloudskipa "Environment based puzzles too could be a good thing." Are you sure you played a different version of Uncharted than me? It had a large share of those.

ronecvan_is_here

@cloudskipa Eh, the pacing in Tomb Raider felt 'off' to me. Although the exploration and puzzle aspect were definitely better then that of UC2. Combat is a different story however, seeing as in U3, the added functionality of grappling enemies expanded the melee way beyond the second one.

Not to mention the supporting cast in TR were nothing other than extended plot devices with little character to them. Obviously the main stand-out for me was Lara whose development was exceptionally well done even if her interactions with the other characters felt artificial. The writing is also superfluous and nowhere near as sharp or as concise compared to U2. Can't blame them though, Amy Henning was writing for that series.

I still think both have room to improve.

@IvorB Sure they share gameplay traits, hell when the first Uncharted was first released, it was called 'dude-raider', but when uncharted 2 arrived, it sincerely carved out an identity of its own.

Its WAY more action packed than Tomb Raider and its puzzles are a fricking joke. It would be insulting to call them puzzles. Whereas Tomb Raider has been (and still is) for a long time, about exploration and has featured puzzles that require players to think whereas the action has often taken a backseat. In this iteration is has certainly changed things up yet it still differs a fair bit from the way I see it. Each to their own.

@cloudskipa "True, Uncharted is a more linear experience but perhaps that needs to change?" That's a matter of opinion, some of the best games ever made are linear. I enjoy them both in different ways.
26 6

ronecvan_is_here

@SaintDaveUK And from a gameplay standpoint, Uncharted is entirely linear, resulting in a 'blockbuster' cinematic experience whereas only the first part of Tomb Raider plays out in an ultra-linear fashion. Hell, it even has an Xp system and an option to veer off course for exploration.

ronecvan_is_here

@SaintDaveUK 'Vague seperations in storyline?' Okay, well one features a charming psychopath who has great interaction and chemistry with his supporting cast and the other is a far more, dark personal journey; both differing in tones.

Think of it like this, one is similar to Indiana Jones and the other borrows inspiration from The Descent, both films with vastly contrasting tones.

@cloudskipa "Probably one of the best games I've played in the last 12 months it certainly has given Naughty Dog something to aim for."

Comparing Tomb Raider with Uncharted is comparing apples to oranges. One focuses solely on cinematic quality and subtle, more well-developed character interactions whereas the other one is more open-ended both gameplay and structure wise whilst featuring a more personal story.

@cloudskipa "Gears of War Judgemnt is also promising to be a huge shake up of the traditional Gears formula, risks are being taken for sure." Apart from asymmetric multiplayer, how is is it a huge shake-up? Its the same chest-high wall simulator featuring gruffly vocal men with unreal dude-bro shooting to it.

Again, I'm not having a rip at gears of war but claiming multiplayer to god of war isn't a big deal whilst the inclusion of an asymmetric multiplayer is another pot-hole in your argument. In fact, there's several.

@cloudskipa "I'm just saying it can be a little frustrating at times and there's too many people who would rather attack another poster rather than tackle the points they're making" That probably means your point is more flawed than you previously imagined. I'm not saying more people agreeing = better game, but more people making reasonable points = more valid points of discussion which you obviously lack.

ronecvan_is_here

@cloudskipa "In fact all games need to evolve, this argument could be leveled at any number of IP's this gen, exclusive or otherwise. The point I'm making is that for me God Of War stands out as being one of the worst examples of an IP that's stagnated due to the lack of ambition in the game's design from the developers. Sure it has some tacked on multiplayer this time around but it's just the same game as before in a new skin. In this article they state how much we're gonna be "blown away" by their next gen projects but it's obvious they are talking about graphics and only graphics. I take issue with that."

The fact that you've just dismissed the multiplayer as a tacked-on feature rather than a key selling point that the devs touted, speaks volumes about your knowledge or personal experience with the game.

Hell the multiplayer alone is far more innovative than any of the recent halo games these days which goes to show the fallacy in your reasoning. If there's any stagnation to level at, level it at the games that have played it safe you moron.

Digital Foundry vs. The Last of Us

ronecvan_is_here

@ilmaestro 'Quote' developers all you want. I could tell you CliffyB thinks he's invented cover-based shooting. Or the developers of Hydrophobia Prophecy and Phil Fish think that japanese developers are terrible. Dev's promote their game, it's their job.

Also your comparison with japanese developers is interesting. The fact of the matter is 'japanese' developers are great. I love MGS despite it's endearing retardness. Or legend of zelda despite it's tone-deaf writing (who the hell hires a writer for that series honestly)

If I was to play Uncharted for the cutscenes than I'd be missing the point and so would anyone agreeing with the former. Also frankly, despite similarities to 'the last of us' it is a new IP which is far more than what I can say for some other developers/publishers.
