BioWare adding multiplayer to Dragon Age - report

redbarony

Cross class combos were done in MMO's years before Dragon Age Origins even existed.

Personally I am not against a multiplayer RPG at all. Neverwinter Nights is an example of how great it can be. My issue is that Bioware seem to be wanting to broaden their appeal by dumbing down their games. Dragon Age 2 stooped so low, it makes me very wary of Bioware in the future.

pcgaminglol #82 10 minutes ago

Witcher 2 was one of the biggest pc exclusives released this year and only sold 1 million copies. That is pathetic compared to console exclusives

It also cost a lot less than it would cost if it was developed for a console. You take in to account their *potential* loss without taking in to account their potential cost. Which is stupid. You also are talking about ONE game, which I personally think was total shit. Do the same for Dragon Age and Skyrim, and then you have more of an idea of how well or how badly PC RPG's sell.

5th Cell boss: "The $60 boxed game is a broken model"

redbarony

He is right, but it's not like companies aren't already trying different models. The monthly subscruption MMO model is well over a decade old. Then there are the F2P newer ones with micropayments on stuff. And then there are lots of indie style games like World of Goo or whatever, which provide a good game for a low price. There was even one game that offered itself for free and accepted donations.

There is also the new (and yet kinda shady) model a lot of new games are doing where they release the game and then have a ton of DLC. The Bethesda games and Dragon Age etc.. they are making a lot of money off these cheap(ish) yet small DLC's.

The ideas are already being used, just not that much.

Skyrim patch due week beginning 28th November

redbarony

@StooMonster

Yeah ok, my point is just that people who buy games when they are brand new (or pre order them) are basically saying to developers, "I don't even care what state the game is. Shut up and take my money!".

If more people just waited for patches and the price to drop a bit, then 'maybe' they would make more of an effort to release games in a better condition.

p.s. I know that this is just a crazy dream.

On a similar note, still waiting for CAP driver for Rage (which with 11.11 driver and 11.11 CAP 2 now runs at 3fps on CrossFire and crashes to desktop with it turned off), and a fix for BF3 which just gets slower and slower FPS the longer it runs until one has to quit.

Maybe you should stop buying stuff on day 1 then? How are they ever going to learn.

Arma 2 dev Bohemia shares alarming PC piracy statistic

Before calling people thick you should read the article. He states "Our statistics from multiplayer show that for every three legitimate buyers playing their game in multiplayer, there are 100 (failed) attempts to play with a pirated version,"
That does not give you a figure of only 3% actually buying the game

YES IT DOES.

You could be pedantic (which you did already) and say that it MAY not be 100 unique attempts, but then I could be pedantic and say that it also does not include the countless people who aren't so stupid that they attempt to play online with their pirated version.... That could actually be millions and probably is. Either way we can't be sure, but I'm going with the 3% anyway. Either way it's a lot of twats gaming for free. I would agree that not every one of these is a lost sale, but I bet a lot of them are and that's what matters.

0 0

redbarony

@soviet_

The sad thing about those numbers from TPB is also that it's massively lower than the real numbers due to all the issues of DHT, software and hardware firewalls, proxies, and networked PC's, screwing with the results. And like soviet said, that's just TPB. And also that's just the numbers 'right now'. It doesn't include the countless numbers of people who have got it and then stopped their client, and they then disappear from the list. In other words, a million or more people could have already snagged it from TPB already, and are not included in that 12 thousand odd seeds.

There are lots of other public sites and then countless private torrent sites. The private sites are often very big too, some having around 100,000 registered users.

It's a massive issue :( Sadly I don't think the solutions are available either. People criticise them for the DRM, and yes the DRM is is a crappy attempt at a solution, but there is NO alternative. These companies have 3 choices - go through all the expense and issues of having your game played online only (like MMO's etc), have annoying DRM, or have nothing and be completely open to piracy. That's not a nice situation to be in.

The Witcher is rubbish. For a game involving mostly combat, to have a system that bad.. is just not right. The 'magic system' (lol) had about what, six spells? And one of them was so overpowered it made the rest of the game a walkthrough, and yet without it, almost impossible. Why not just make an adventure game instead? Sorry but if you are making an action RPG, at least give me a decent combat system. Rolling around spamming mouse button one is NOT GOOD. The first game was shit for this and they said they had reworked it, it's annoying to see that they reworked it in to something equally crap.

Minecraft Review

redbarony

Sucking at the hype pipe, I love that.

The thing that bugs me about this game, is that grown ups rave about it. If it was a kids game and only kids played it, I would be really happy for everyone. Kids are entertained, someone made lots of money and will hopefully cater to them again, happy days. I have got no problem with Angry Birds, it knows it's place. The problem is that Minecraft has been given serious mass acceptance, even 10/10 on a site like this. That's just not right. It's a 6bit game about building blocks, come on.

It has a lot going for it. I felt immersed in the world, even though it was very old school graphics. And I loved the freedom of being able to go anywhere and build almost any (albeit blocky) structure. The problem is that after you spend a few hours doing that, there is nothing left to do. I can reproduce my house. Then I can make an epic "bat cave" in the side of a mountain. Then I can make an gigantic stone castle which you can see from miles away, and I have a glass tunnel that travels through the sky and links all my abodes together. Cool. But now what? Nothing attacks my buildings and there is nothing to work towards. People criticise unimaginative MMO players for always taking the path of least resistance, and not pushing themselves etc.. This game has NO resistance at all.

If the creatures constantly attacked my buildings, and I had to build defenses like a Tower Defense type game... now we are talking! I could build my big cool castle and put catapults on the ramparts and I could stand in my tower and shoot my bow and arrow at the enemies attacking. And then during the day I could race off and mine for magic tomes to use spells and materials to make bigger and better defense towers... Now THAT's a game. But this has nothing like that. So it's hard to not get pissed off when I see nothing but love, admiration and rave reviews for it.
