Flinthook review - kinetic platforming that's perfect for Switch

marmaduke

Itís lovely- my main nitpick is that some of the traps are almost impossible to see amid the screen furniture. Too often a perfect run gets spoilt unfairly.

The Switch is quite the Indie device now, isnít it? Interesting how all the retro-pixel art games harking back to the NES and SNES have now found a home on a Nintendo

I take this to mean that a) theyíve run out of money, b) theyíve not been able to find a publisher. Itís also quite likely theyíve already taken on at least some additional debt and / or to complete the game to the current standard itíll take another 18 months.

Hate to see this happen but it wouldnít have been the first time it has. Say what you like about Double Fine but at least they got Broken Age out the door; canít see that happening here.

@Ubermenschkind sympathy with a characterís motivations is important for any story, since if theyíre not doing things that make sense to you itís hard to care for the story.

I think youíre seeing the word Ďsympathyí in an article about a computer game and concluding that you should activate Breitbart Mode, which is rather tragic.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds review

marmaduke

Itís great. When a match gets down to the final 20, it becomes extremely tense. When it gets down to the final five, your heart will be in your mouth. Win and youíll feel like youíve conquered life, and then youíll do it all over again.

Itís a bit rough around the edges and Iíve not played the XBox version but itís definitely worth it.

Why Zelda's Champions' Ballad add-on doesn't really work

marmaduke

I started a new playthrough a couple of weeks ago in anticipation, and after not touching the game sine I finished it in March. Iíd tried Master Mode and bounced off it hard as it made the game feel like work.

Replaying it *with* the new content as opposed to *for* the new content has been brilliant- Iím finding huge amounts of old stuff that Iíd missed, and adding in bits of the DLC as and when. Itís great- I can see how if youíd feel a bit short-changed if you were already done and could head straight for the new shrines, but doing it this way gives you the best version of probably the best game this year (apart from Prey)

Desperately trying to get Ubisoft to talk about Far Cry 5's controversial US setting

marmaduke

@Whitster Come off it, itís based in modern day America and is about a group of flag-waving religious nutcases. Given the current state of US politics and discourse, itís really not that big a stretch to ask the people who created this game if they were maybe thinking of some recent events or people in particular when they "came up" with their "ideas".

Whilst thereís a chance that the antagonists they have created are purely a figment of their imagination and in no way reflect any attributes
of any people, places, attitudes or events of real people, either living or dead, itís a pretty fucking slim chance.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus review

marmaduke

@dirigiblebill just came down here to compain, but I'm glad you're taking notes! It's a particular shame as the frequent left-turns the first story took were a very large part of it's appeal. Compare with, say, Destiny, where spoiling the plot is virtually impossible as it's utterly predictable and impossible to care about any of the characters.

Looking forward to getting into it when I get home tonight regardless.

It was ok? The space battles were good but the troop-level stuff was just confusing. You get told to stay with your squad but itís impossible to tell who they are. Officer turrets donít seem to do anything, and itís impossible to survive as that class for any length of time. Fighting enemy heroes is not remotely fun, and fighting generally just seems too chaotic.

Is there a "right" or "wrong" way to play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds?

marmaduke

'Camping' is fine but it usually get you killed in the end. At some point you'll probably have to move, and if you're hiding in a bathroom you'll have no sense of where anyone else is. So it's not really 'camping' that wins games, so much as being very careful about whether you can be seen.

@Eaton_Corvinus - some weapons are certainly better than others, but the effective difference isn't that great. The M16 might take four shots to kill an armoured opponent where the AK might take three or a sniper rifle two, but that's usually balanced out by the rate of fire.

All the really, really nice guns are kept in air-drops, and you almost always have to fight for those.

I, for one, absolutely loved Evermore's tactics in the Solo event. Even though he spent quite a lot of time basically hiding, he did actually win the second round- no mean feat in itself.

The few games I've won have usually been a result of only sticking my neck out when absolutely necessary, and getting the drop on people. I'm nowhere near good enough to compete with the elite headshot crowd, but the great thing about this game is that if you get yourself in the right place you don't need to.

Inside Sumo's game jam

marmaduke

@Foolish_Monkey come off it, there's always been something new and interesting to play, and it's always been the case that 90 percent of releases are generic toss and the eternal FIFA iterations.

In the PS2 era it was all 3D platformers instead of shooters. Before that it was 2D platformers. These days it's undercooked sci-fi where you carry two guns and fight against The Abstract Noun.

Yet there's always been, and still is, great stuff with personality and feeling- Overcooked, Senua's Sacrifice, Niddhigg, Prey all came out recently, were brilliant and unique- and that's just the stuff I've played. There's a lot more that I haven't.

It's like when people say music used to be better in the 90s, and forget that while Blur and Pulp were great most of the stuff played on the radio sounded like the Vengaboys.
