@shotbyascot And delayed because they were actually making it (i.e. it was not already one the disc). And they no doubt play tested it thoroughly before release too.

PS4 fails to boost Japan console market

floppylobster

@The_Red They work a lot, they spend a lot of time commuting, they don't have a lot of room in their houses (definitely not enough for Kinect). A lot of houses only have one small TV (hence the Wii U with its separate screen controller). Handheld gaming just makes more sense in Japan. It has ever since the days of the Game & Watch.

In terms of marketing Microsoft and Sony can say anything in the weeks before their console release and get a free mention on gaming websites. Basically a free ad. And this is how they've used that opportunity today...

Next week - Microsoft warns, don't stand on your Xbox!

I love dinosaurs and on paper this game has always been something I've been interested in. But then every time I play a version, I end up hating the way they cartoonishly handled the dinosaurs. I know it's based on a comic book but the audience for this game would have been in the generation that grew up with Jurassic Park, yet the designers always seem to be looking at Land Before Time for inspiration.

Witness a comparison between The Wind Waker HD and the original GameCube version

floppylobster

The problem with this game is that it's so memorable that replaying won't be much fun rediscovering things that are so clear in my memory already. My love of this game is so deep I can only hope this revives interest in this version of Link and a new Wind Waker Zelda is brought to consoles. I mean the work they've done here surely will come in handy for that right?

EA and Nintendo: the collapse of the "unprecedented relationship"

floppylobster

EA have been going where the money is throughout their history. Any game company looking to deal with them should know they'll turn on you, merge then sell you, or just leave you hanging high and dry in a heartbeat.

It's not like they offer the key to your console's success. But if you are successful you can guarantee they'll appear, trying to suck whatever profit they can from your user base.

I wanted to say something about a tortoise and a hare - but then after the race the tortoise, (who never really was a tortoise and was actually quite fast), holds a press conference about TV and Sports and nobody wants to interview it and the rabbit has locked itself away in a room to make games and still hasn't come back out. And then the ah... Eagle? swoops in and ah... forget it, this gen is so last gen.

The Wind Waker's missing dungeons were reused in other Zelda games

floppylobster

So once they fix the 'issues' with the original game it's going to get 11 out of 10 right?
0 0

floppylobster

@Uberheertje Well it's nice to meet you. Valid points all of them.

I think I also questioned the straight-forward nature of the dungeons when playing. But then I realized that by only giving us limited rooms to work with they could be as tricky as they wanted with the puzzle. And so the puzzles became more about solving them rather than about backtracking through rooms and rooms to find a switch you'd forgotten to hit. (However it wasn't something they really started to exploit until Skyward Sword).

And at first I was a little wary of new Link and his big eyes. Then I noticed how expressive they were and how the story was being told through his looks (rather than the embarrassed Japanese head back scratch animation which is about all you got out of Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword Link).

It was about the point that Link's sister was taken than I was charmed by the game. And after that I forgave it for anything.

I love hard games too. Although I've never played it, Dark Souls is my sort of game. But I think Zelda benefited from the focused dungeons that started with Wind Waker. Because Zelda games are long enough that they should just be fun, they don't have to be challenging. And maybe I'm blocking out some of the worse parts but I remember that game with such fondness I have to assume I had a lot of fun.

@darkmorgado Can someone here please admit to being one of the people who slammed this game when it was released and now admits it is a classic? I've never met one. Not someone who didn't like it, not someone who always loved it, but someone who thought it was rubbish and now thinks it good.

I'd be so interested in hearing how their preconceived perception of what a Zelda game should be got in the way of the game that they were playing. It fascinates me (I see it all the time with film), so rarely with games.

If something good comes of this release I hope it develops a new fan base for this game that helps bring about a real console sequel (not a handheld one).

The most popular arguments in favour of Xbox One DRM

floppylobster

Basically the news and revelations about the system were only going to get worse from here on out. The jig was up so Microsoft scraped the whole thing before the details got out and pre-orders dropped to nothing.

The ease in which it has been taken away really shows how essential it was.

We've had crap ideas served to us before and accepted them. Microsoft need to fire their marketing team for not knowing how to label crap as 'peaches'.

That difficult second screen

floppylobster

I'm in my 40s this year and when I used the second controller screen it took a moment for my eyes to refocus. Worse still, in some games I had to lift my glasses to see my controller screen then put them back down when looking at the TV. On top of that my neck started to get a bit sore.

The screen felt smaller than my iPad and I found it distracting to look away from the big screen every few minutes. The game itself had to keep reminding me (in giant letters) where I should be looking (proving it was counter-intuitive).

The only use I can see it having is in some sort of multi-player party game where someone acts like a quiz master. Maybe there can be a version of Left 4 Dead where someone acts as the Computer AI? But as I said, I'm old, so I don't have many gaming friends any more. So maybe a Pokemon Snap sequel?

For me the Wii U controller, being not quite big enough, slightly distracting from the main screen, and lacking in battery life, really is placed in the middle of nowhere for usefulness.

Bigger really is better: Dead Rising 3 preview

floppylobster

@PSfourskin Well they've already done zombie Nazis so that's out. I guess I'm just getting flashbacks of that time during the PS1/PS2/Xbox era when it became so saturated with Nazi and WW2 shooters games that it was beyond a cliche. Zombies are at that point too. I don't know what's next. Demons? Mythical creatures? Vampires? Terrorists? Stormtroopers? Aliens? Crazy Eastern European villagers? All of those have been done too but just not as much as Zombies.

I actually think Dead Rising was the best and most interesting of the Zombie games (along with Left for Dead 2), but if I was in a game development meeting and someone proposed the enemies were going to be zombies, I'd have serious reservations. The only thing keeping me interested would be the name Capcom. So while I'm tired of zombies, I still believe Capcom can make it good.

What is the point of Xbox One DRM?

floppylobster

People who have money will spend money. People who don't, won't. There's no magic way of stopping the people without money from stealing and getting them to buy full priced product. And those who are pirating are not saving up thousands of dollars in off-shore accounts, they're spending in other ways.

In short, money is not being lost, it's just being redistributed in different ways.

Shutting down one market or another does not make money, it only risks breaking the current economic model. Which is fine if you have something to replace in place. If not, then you'll see your profits go to somebody who does (as happened with Apple when the music industry couldn't work out how to give consumers what they wanted).

I assume game balance is going to be incredibly difficult to achieve in any sort of meaningful way. Which is not helped by their statement -

"All these moves are very easy to pull off and are designed to make you feel like a 'bad-ass'" - And this is something I feel is wrong with a lot of video games today.

They've become like time-wasting ego boosts for overworked salary men or young teens wanting to take out their frustrations with the world (usually by shooting others). I know there's a place for this sort of game. I just wish it wasn't the dominant game type while stuff like Shadow of the Colossus and Panzer Dragoon Saga is few and far between.

The deleted scenes of Doom

floppylobster

"Hall's early and more realistic locations were dismissed as not fun to play and replaced by more fantastic designs"
- A pity more of today's designers can't learn from this.

- The key to Doom being fun was there were so many enemies to mow down in any given room you stumbled in to. Quake was not as much fun as it took several shots just to kill a dog, and many modern shooters suffer the same problem.

- IMO Left 4 Dead 2 is probably the closest game to capturing the Doom magic. That element of surprise, that element of fear, those overwhelming odds...

Lara Croft attempted rape will make Tomb Raider players want to "protect" her

floppylobster

@foamy Because Irreversible deals with the aftermath of that act and in the scene you can see the trauma and pain. There's no way in hell a game developer is going to be able to deal with this issue in the same way Irreversible does. Game writing is at a level where it should not be trying to deal with issues they are unable to cope with. The reasons they have given for including the scene highlight how lightly they are treating the subject. Do not expect anything as powerful or repellant as Irreversible. And for that reason, they should leave the subject alone until they're ready to deal with the issue and the consequences properly.

floppylobster

And games as a fun pastime goes out the fucking window.

Unless they manage to seriously and respectfully deal with the issue of rape, it's psychological effects, and consequences then this is not material for a game. I would not have wanted to play this as a child. I do not want today's children playing this. Their revelation that it's designed to make you care for the protagonist shows they have no clue. Rape will make me feel pity for a protagonist, contempt for the rapist, and loathing for the game developer for trying such a cheap trick to get me to care for their protagonist. A fictional virtual rape. Why not try some character development and better storytelling instead?

floppylobster

"..acts of extreme violence are met with rapturous air punching from significant portions of the gathered audience..."

I went to E3 a couple years ago and left very disappointed. It made me embarrassed to be a gamer. Maybe it's just an American thing but lots of out of shape socially awkward assholes running around ogling women and acting like they were super cool, whooping at blood and guts and tits just made me feel sad for a part of me that understands their behaviour but is trying to overcome it. It was a mirror to the worst parts of me and the worst parts of video games.

Fearful Asymmetry? Assessing the Promise of the Wii U

floppylobster

I trust Nintendo can do it, but with so many possibilities for gameplay they run the risk have trying and make the game fun for all types of player combination possibilities. That will either cause long development cycles or result in unbalanced games (that are fun for 4 players but not 3 etc...)

Once again it looks like their programmers will be able to pull it off but not many others will. This could be Nintendo's Dreamcast - Not their final console - but a spectacular and innovative console that has a few brilliant first party games and not enough support from elsewhere.
